2 February 2019 Dear People of God at Memorial Lutheran Church, At our recent Congregational Council Meeting, Congregational Vice-President Amy Hoffman began our meeting with a devotion which invited us to think about all of those things that place demands upon us and sometimes push us into unhealthy, unfaithful ways of feeling and acting. The devotion acknowledged our need for more Jesus. Amy continued by indicating her own commitment for a stronger devotional life in the new year. Members of the Council resonated with the theme and agreed with the need for more Jesus. Within that context and time for prayer, we continued with the celebration of the Lord s Supper and, then and there, received the gift of more Jesus. The devotion led to some additional reflection in terms of the question of how we keep our lives centered in Christ. For almost 25 years I have begun every day using a four volume devotional resource that reviews the New Testament every year and the Old Testament every two years. Devotional readings and prayers augment the readings of Scripture. I ve taken this resource with me wherever I have gone. No matter what is going on my my life, this resource helps to keep me centered in Christ. Northwestern Ohio Synod Bishop Daniel Beaudoin has invited the synod to claim Psalm 119:105 as the verse for the year: Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. The Synod web site: offers a number of resources for the study of Scripture. I encourage you to visit the web site and check them out. In the narthex, the entrance area of the church, is a 2019 Daily Bible Reading Guide which provides daily lessons that work through the Bible in a year. Some years ago when I was spending many hours on the road, I worked through much of the Bible through audio tapes. What resources work for you? In addition to worship on Sunday mornings, what are the means through which you create space for the Holy Spirit to nurture you in your faith? I would love to hear from you! Resources for Study at Memorial There are a number of resources for group study at Memorial. A Women s Bible Study, meets on Saturday mornings. I will be leading an evening class, 7pm, on Thursday evenings, January 17 and 24. The class will look at several Gospel lessons. The Sunday Morning Adult Class offers a rich variety of topics designed to enrich the faith of participants and to cross into matters that impact our life in society. On Wednesday evenings in February (6, 13, 20), from 6:00-7:30pm, Memorial will be offering a Winter Vacation Bible School under the direction of Kelly Zaborski, Christian Life Coordinator.

3 How might we as a congregation strengthen our ability to help friends and members of Memorial grow in faith and in the ability to make connections between the faith we confess and the lives we live? Again, please don t hesitate to make suggestions-and help to implement them! A Review of the Ministry of Memorial Every year congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America are asked to submit a Congregational Report which reviews the congregation s ministry for the past year. Included in the Report is a questionnaire. Because I have only been at Memorial for five months, I asked members of the Congregational Council to complete the review. Listed below are the results: Memorial Lutheran Church Council Survey Results January 7, 2019 Eleven members of the Council completed the survey included in the ELCA Congregational Report. On a 1-5 ranking with 1 being Hardly at all and 5 being Very Well, the results are as follows: Please tell us how each phrase describes this congregation: A. Worship nurtures people s faith B. There is a clear sense of mission here C. There is excitement about the future here D. The congregation is a positive force in the community E. The congregation is always ready to try something new F. The congregation works for social justice/advocacy. 3 G. The congregation helps people deepen their relationship with God Please tell us how this congregation is at the following: A. Building strong, healthy relationships among members B. Incorporating newcomers into the congregation s life. 3.9 C. Seeking out and using the gifts of members of all ages D. Equipping members to share their faith with others E. Addressing social concerns (helping those in need) F. Managing disagreements in a healthy, respectful manner G. Interacting with the local community H. Helping members live out their faith in their daily lives How would you have responded to this questionnaire? My sense is that God has blessed this congregation in many ways. Guided by the Holy Spirit, there is a good foundation upon which we can build. Yet it is important to ask, where are our growth edges? What are your good gifts which might be better shared in the life and witness of this congregation? How might this congregation be a better resource for you as you live out your identity as a baptized child of God? How might we be more intentional with respect to being a sign of Christ s presence in the geographical community of which we are a part? As we move into a new year, may God s Word be a lamp unto our feet and a light to our path. Together with you in Christ, Pastor Marcus C. Lohrmann

4 American Red Cross Blood Drive 2019 church directories will be available to pick up on February 10. Please look for them with their yellow cover on the table in the front of the church. Our annual blood drive will take place on Saturday, March 9 from 8:30am-1:15pm in the lounge. A sign-up sheet is posted on the Mission bulletin board. Last day to have given blood to eligible is January 12, We are also in need of volunteers to help the day of the drive and a sign-u sheet is posted with volunteer times and needs on the bulletin board The Year of Scripture The year 2019 is the year of scripture and the Northwestern Ohio Synod has a special focus for us to read the Bible. Suggested readings and the dates to read them can be found on the table in the front of the church. The memory verse that Bishop Beaudoin has chosen for 2019 is Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Psalm 119:105 On January 13, we welcomed Nancy Churchill and Marge Reas into our Memorial family. Nancy is retired as a librarian in Lucas County and enjoys singing and music. She joined our Memorial family because she feels we are a wonderful church and she is happy to attend with her friend, Marge. Marge is retired as an RN from St. V s. She enjoys gardening, dog care, child care and visitation of sick and elderly people. She joined us because we are an active ministry and we will help her to grow in her faith. She is also grateful to attend with her friend, Nancy. All women and your friends are invited to dinner out on Tuesday, February 5, 6:00pm at Jing Chaun. They are located at 4424 Secor Road. Please sign-up by Sunday, February 3. For questions, you can call Char Roush at "If God is watching us, the least we can do is be entertaining." Author unknown

A non-refundable deposit of $79.00 is due by Sunday, February 3: checks are payable to Grace Luther League and can be placed in Kelly Zaborski s mailbox. Some fundraisers have been planned to help with the cost but would encourage parents with ideas to get involved as more fundraisers mean a lower final cost. Chaperone, Dave Smith will be available for an informational meeting on Sunday, February 3 following the worship service to provide more details and answer any questions you may have. Please plan to join us as we watch this family s inspirational journey and faith.
