Our God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. O Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Our God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are our God, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Chant of Praise (10 a.m.) -5-

The Collect of the Day (7:45 a.m.) The Collect of the Day at 7:45 a.m. is adapted from The Book of Common Prayer, p Silence May God be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O God, you have taught us to keep all your commandments by loving you and our neighbor: Grant us the grace of your Holy Spirit, that we may be devoted to you with our whole heart, and united to one another with pure affection; through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Collect of the Day (10 a.m.) The Collect of the Day at 10 a.m. is adapted from the Vanderbilt Divinity Library. Silence May God be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. God of all nations and peoples, your Son commanded his disciples to preach and heal throughout the world. Grant us, by the power of the Holy Spirit, the zeal to proclaim the good news of peace and justice, and gather all humanity into life with you. Amen. We Proclaim and Respond to the Word of God A Reading from 2 Kings [5:1-14] Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Aram, was a great man and in high favor with his master, because by him YHWH had given victory to Aram. The man, though a mighty warrior, suffered from leprosy. Now the Arameans on one of their raids had taken a young girl captive from the land of Israel, and she served Naaman s wife. She said to her mistress, If only my lord were with the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy. So Naaman went in and told his lord just what the girl from the land of Israel had said. And the king of Aram Please be seated. said, Go then, and I will send along a letter to the king of Israel. He went, taking with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold, and ten sets of garments. He brought the letter to the king of Israel, which read, When this letter reaches you, know that I have sent to you my servant Naaman, that you may cure him of his leprosy. When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes and said, Am I God, to give death or life, that this man sends word to me to cure a man of his leprosy? Just look and see how he is trying to pick a quarrel with me. But when Elisha the man of God -6-

heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, he sent a message to the king, Why have you torn your clothes? Let him come to me, that he may learn that there is a prophet in Israel. So Naaman came with his horses and chariots, and halted at the entrance of Elisha s house. Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, Go, wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored and you shall be clean. But Naaman became angry and went away, saying, I thought that for me he would surely come out, and stand and call on the name of YHWH his God, and would wave his hand over the spot, and cure the leprosy! Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them, and be clean? He turned and went away in a rage. But his servants approached and said to him, Father, if the prophet had commanded you to do something difficult, would you not have done it? How much more, when all he said to you was, Wash, and be clean? So he went down and immersed himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God; his flesh was restored like the flesh of a young boy, and he was clean. Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s People. Thanks be to God. Psalm 30 1 I will exalt you, O God, because you have delivered me * and have not let mockery triumph. 2 O God, I cried out to you, * and you restored me to wholeness. 3 You brought me up from the pit; * you restored my life as I was going down to the grave. 4 Sing to the Holy One, you blessed people; * give thanks to the Living God. 5 For anger endures but the twinkling of an eye, * but kindness for a lifetime. 6 Weeping may spend a night, * but joy returns in the morning. 7 When I feel secure, I say, I shall never be disturbed. * your love makes me a mountain; in you, I stand strong. 8 Then I turned away from you, * and I was filled with fear. The Psalm is read responsively by whole verse. -7-

9 I cried out to you, O God; I pleaded with you, saying, 10 What use is my death? what profit, if I go down to the pit? * will the dust praise you? will ashes declare your faithfulness? 11 Hear me, I prayed, for I have lost my way; * come to my help, O God. 12 Now you have turned my mourning into dancing; * you have put off my sack-cloth and clothed me with joy. 13 Therefore my heart sings to you without ceasing; * I will give thanks to you for ever. A Reading from Galatians [6:7-16] Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. If you sow to your own flesh, you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit. So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest-time, if we do not give up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith. See what large letters I make when I am writing in my own hand! It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that try to compel Lector: Oiga lo que el Espíritu está diciendo al pueblo de Dios. Pueblo: Demos gracias a Dios. Sequence Music A Reading from the Holy Gospel [Luke 10:1-11, 16-20] Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Christ. The Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. He said to them, The harvest -8- Read in Spanish. you to be circumcised only that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. Even the circumcised do not themselves obey the law, but they want you to be circumcised so that they may boast about your flesh. May I never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision nor uncircumcision is anything; but a new creation is everything! As for those who will follow this rule peace be upon them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God. The people may stand. is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst

of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, Peace to this house! And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you. Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the laborer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; cure the sick who are there, and say to them, The kingdom of God has come near to you. But whenever you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say, Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has come near. Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me. The seventy returned with joy, saying, Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us! He said to them, I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven. Deacon: The Gospel of Jesus Christ. Praise to you, O Christ. The Sermon A period of silence follows the Sermon, marked with meditation bell. The Nicene Creed (7:45 a.m.) Please be seated. Preacher: The Rev. Ben Garren The people may stand. The Nicene Creed is a historical statement of faith used by the early Christian community to define orthodoxy. Please join us as you feel called. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. -9-

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son]. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Filioque (Latin for and the son ), the dogmatic formula expressing the double procession of the Holy Spirit, was added to the Nicene Creed by the Western church. A Litany for Independence Day (10 a.m.) The people may stand. A Litany for Independence Day was adapted from a prayer by The Rev. Rick Morley. Deacon: As we remember the birth of our nation, and the gifts of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, let us offer our thanks and prayers to God, the giver of all good gifts. Deacon: For the tribes and nations who cared for this land for generation upon generation, We give you thanks, God the Creator. Deacon: For the women and men who braved the long journey by sea to come to this new land, We give you thanks, God the Sustainer. Deacon: For patriots who dreamed of, and fought for, a free nation, We give you thanks, God the Liberator. Deacon: For the men and women who laid the foundation of our democracy, and who pledged liberty and justice for all, We give you thanks, God the Liberator. -10-

Deacon: For the innovators and artists, poets and teachers, farmers and factory workers; for all who labor and provide for the common good, We give you thanks, God the Sustainer. Deacon: For all the prophets and civil rights leaders, who have struggled to bring dignity to all people, We give you thanks, God the Liberator. Deacon: For this land, with its peaks and valleys, coasts and deserts, fields and meadows, We give you thanks, God the Creator. Deacon: God, we pray for The United States, that we always strive to be a nation that promotes liberty and freedom, truth and justice. We give you thanks, God the Liberator. Deacon: That we might always be a nation where all are free to worship and pray, We give you thanks, God the Sustainer. Deacon: That those who are elected to govern and lead would be guided by you, and be ever aware of the trust that has been given them, We give you thanks, God the Creator. Gracious God, Father and Mother of all nations, bless us and our land; prosper the work of our hands, and increase in us your grace and compassion, and our offerings of thanks to you, our rock and our salvation; through Jesus Christ. Amen. The 10 a.m. service continues on page 14. Prayers of the People (7:45 a.m.) Parish intercessions are listed on page 26. The Prayers of the People were adapted by The Rev. Claudia Heath from prayers written by Canon Susanne Watson Epting of New Song Episcopal Church in the diocese of Iowa. Each prayer is read by a different member of the congregation. Please feel free to participate by reading a prayer. Leader: God of all that is good, in Scripture you give us your vision for the world. In love, you give us your grace. In wisdom, you give us each other. Through the vision of your Spirit we learn that your very hope is that we be your presence, your power, and your Body in the world. For this, we give you thanks and, as one body, offer ourselves and each other as we pray. We pray for every church in every place and for every community of faith throughout the world where love is proclaimed as the core of our lives and our living. This week we give thanks for the Dalai Lama s visit with President Obama, American mayors, and Lady Gaga as he spreads his message of love and compassion across American culture. 12 Leader: God of Justice and Truth, we pray for our nation. Teach us humility, open our hearts to those who are different, give us compassion and understanding, forgive us our sins, and restore us to health. May all of us learn from the relatedness of God how to live in love for each other. This week we give thanks for the Supreme Court ruling that upholds the broad reach of a federal law that bars people with misdemeanor domestic violence convictions from owning guns. We also give thanks for the Pentagon s decision to immediately lift a ban on transgender service members. (People add their own prayers silently or aloud.) God who calls us to Justice and forgives us, Open our hearts to receive your truth. Leader: Help us reach out to the world, seeing the beauty of your gifts as well as the urgency of need in all we serve. Show us how to live so that we do not exploit your world or your people in it. In the wake of the United Kingdom s vote to leave the European Union, we pray for non-anxiousness and thoughtfulness among leaders there and abroad. (People may add their own prayers silently or out loud.) God who makes power of powerlessness, Make us channels of justice and peace. Leader: We pray for those who suffer and for their caregivers and companions. Bless those in our midst who are tired or hurting and those who trust us to pray for them. This week we especially remember those affected in our neighborhood by the first storms of the monsoon season. We pray for all on our prayer list * as well as those we name now. God of all blessings, We give you heartfelt thanks and praise. The Collect after the Prayers of the People is by The Rev. Steven Shakespeare. God, whose kingdom comes impossibly near: share with us the authority that sets others free; send us on the way of challenge and conversion; reveal to us the vision of hatred falling from its throne in summer lightning storms; through Jesus Christ, who empowers us. Amen. Confession of Sin (7:45 a.m.) The Confession of Sin is from The Book of Common Prayer. Deacon: Let us confess our sins against God, our neighbors, and God s creation. All: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. -13-

The 10 a.m. service resumes here. Prayer of Confession (10 a.m.) (inspired by Luke 10:1-20, Galatians 6:1-16, and 2 Kings 5:1-14) From A Harvest of Joy, Healing, and Peace: Service Prayers for the 7th Sunday after Pentecost, written by Rev. Heather A. Moody. Posted on the United Church of Christ s Worship Ways website. Deacon: Deacon: Deacon: Silent prayer The Peace O God, we know that Jesus sent out his disciples without purse, luggage, or sandals. All too often, we find ourselves clinging to possessions we don t need, looking for safety by avoiding risk, and bearing heavy burdens that slow us down. Forgive us for our reluctance to travel lightly and heal us of our pain and guilt. Forgive us and heal us, O God. Holy One, the Apostle Paul encouraged the Galatians not to grow weary, but to use every opportunity to work for the good of all. And yet, hectic schedules, competing demands, cynicism, and doubt erode our commitment and leave us feeling burned out. Forgive us for any hollow excuses we are tempted to make and heal us of our exhaustion. Forgive us and heal us, O God. O God, we confess that, like the warrior Naaman, we sometimes think you only perform great complicated acts in flashy and dramatic ways. We then fail to see how you are at work in the simple tasks and ordinary experiences of everyday life. Forgive us for our misunderstanding and heal us of our sightlessness. Forgive us and heal us, O God. There is no pain that God cannot heal. There is no wrong that God cannot forgive. Come, immerse yourselves in the healing waters of God s forgiveness. Come and be restored. Let God make you whole. Thanks be to God! Amen. The peace of God be always with you. And also with you. Meditation bell will be rung to bring us back to silence. -14-

Prayer for Birthdays and Anniversaries (7:45 a.m.) All: O God, our times are in your hand: Look with favor, we pray, on your servants as they begin another year. Grant that they may grow in wisdom and grace, and strengthen their trust in your goodness all the days of their lives; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. Prayer for Birthdays and Anniversaries (10 a.m.) O God, grant long life and peace and protection and many years! The Liturgy of the Table Offertory Sentence Please be seated. But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers who will forget but doers who act they will be blessed in their doing. [James 1:25] The 10 a.m. service continues on page 18. Offertory Anthem (7:45 a.m.) O day of peace that dimly shines Charles Hubert Hastings Parry James Gooden, soloist -15-

Table Chant (7:45 a.m.) The people may stand. The Great Thanksgiving (7:45 a.m.) Eucharistic Prayer A is adapted for inclusive language from The Book of Common Prayer. God is with us. God is present here. Rejoice! Lift up your hearts. We lift our hearts to the Most High. Let us give thanks to the Holy One. It is right to offer thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Creator God, maker of heaven and earth. For by water and the Holy Spirit you have made us a new people in Jesus Christ, to show forth your glory in all the world. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever say this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Celebrant and Holy, holy, holy God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. -16-

Holy and gracious One: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Maker of all. At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Deacon: Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant and Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ is present now. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O God, in this act of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with Paul, Walter Rauschenbusch, Washington Gladden, Jacob Riis, the founders of the United States and the Episcopal Church, John Hus, * and all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Creator, now and for ever. AMEN. * Walter Rauschenbusch, Washington Gladden and Jacob Riis were early 20th-century American prophetic witnesses. Rauschenbusch wrote the Theology of the Social Gospel, articulating building the kingdom of God on earth. Gladden preached the same social Gospel as religious editor of the New York Independent, also exposing corruption in the New York political system. Riis muckraker journalism did much to awaken the nation to the plight of the urban poor. John Hus was a turn-of-the-15th-century Czech priest who became leader of the Czech reform movement, which called for a return to scripture and living out of the word of God in one s life. -17-

The Lord s Prayer (7:45 a.m.) (traditional) The people may stand. Deacon: As our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray, Deacon and Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The 7:45 a.m. service continues on page 22. The 10 a.m. service resumes here. Offertory Music (10 a.m.) The Stars and Strips Forever John Philip Sousa Pause Prayer over the Gifts (10 a.m.) The Prayer over the Gifts is from A New Zealand Prayer Book. Giver of life, receive all we offer you this day. Let the Spirit you bestow on your Church continue to work in the world through the hearts of all who believe. Amen. -18-

Table Chant (10 a.m.) The people may stand. The Great Thanksgiving (10 a.m.) The Great Thanksgiving is adapted from Steven Shakespeare s Eucharistic Prayer 3 in Prayers for an Inclusive Church. God is with us. God is present here. Rejoice! Lift up your hearts. We lift our hearts to the Most High. Let us give thanks to the Holy One. It is right to offer thanks and praise. Lifegiving God, your word speaks in the void, calling into being things that are not, inviting us to share your work of creation. We thank you for the ages long of gathering stars and cooling earth, of life evolving and waking eyes of wonder. We thank you for the creatures with whom we share the world, for their lives so different from our own and the richness they reveal. We thank you for the Son of Man, formed from Mary s flesh and nurtured by her faith; he walked the growing earth and proclaimed a fearless kingdom of bird and lily, child and stranger, the beggar and the blind. -19-

On the cross, he joined the labor of all creation s yearning; in his rising, he hallowed all flesh to bear the glory of God; he gives the brooding Spirit to bring to birth a living hope. Therefore, with all that has life through him with animals and angels and all who hope for a new creation, we share the song of love which sounds from all eternity: Sanctus (Holy) (10 a.m.) -20-

The Celebrant continues: We ask that your Holy Spirit will fall upon us + and upon these gifts + that these fragile, earthly things may be to us the body and blood of our brother Jesus Christ; who, on the night that he was betrayed, gathered with his faltering friends for a meal that tasted of freedom. Calling them to his table, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and said: This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me. In the same way after supper, he took the cup, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, whenever you drink it, to remember me. As on that night, so here and now he offers himself in touch and taste beyond what all words can hold. Deacon: Great is the mystery of faith. People & Christ has died Christ is risen Christ is present now. Therefore, we come to him in whom all is created in heaven and on earth, whose cross and resurrection make all things new. People & We offer this to you, asking you to smile upon the gift we bring, for you alone are the Giver and Christ s the gift through which we live once and for all. Through him who was emptied to bear your fullness we make our prayer with Paul, Walter Rauschenbusch, Washington Gladden, Jacob Riis, the founders of the United States and the -21-

Episcopal Church, John Hus, * and all created life to the glory of the God who fills all in all now and for ever. AMEN. The Lord s Prayer (10 a.m.) (Contemporary) The people may stand. Each Sunday at Grace St. Paul s, the Lord s Prayer alternates between English and Spanish. Deacon: As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray, Deacon and Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. The 7:45 a.m. service resumes here. The Fraction Anthem is adapted from other texts by The Rev. Steve Keplinger. Be known to us, risen Christ, in the breaking of the bread. Alleluia. The bread which we break makes all of us one with you. Alleluia. The Invitation to Communion The Communion The Gifts of God for the People of God. Please be seated. Everyone is invited to receive Holy Communion. Please approach the altar rail from the center aisle. Take the first available space. You may choose the standing station at the center or the stations along the rail. You may come forward to receive a blessing if you prefer not to receive communion. Place crossed arms on chest to signal your desire for a blessing. You may also do this if you prefer not to receive the wine. You may touch the chalice and the chalice bearer will say the words of administration. -22-

Sending Eucharistic Visitors After communion, the service resumes here. The Celebrant may name the Eucharistic Visitors and those who may receive Holy Communion at home. All say together: We send you forth bearing these Holy Gifts. May those to whom you go share with us in the Communion of Christ s Body and Blood. We who are many are one body, because we all share one bread, one cup. Postcommunion Prayer (7:45 a.m.) Let us pray. The people may stand. The Postcommunion Prayer is adapted from The Book of Common Prayer. Celebrant and Eternal God, divine Creator, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Savior. Amen. Postcommunion Prayer (10 a.m.) (inspired by Galatians 6 and Luke 10) The people may stand. The Postcommunion Prayer was written by Thom Shuman, and posted on Lectionary Liturgies. Blessing Let us never grow weary of doing what is right! We will go to seek justice for all of God s children. Let us not grow weary of leading others to the kingdom! We will go to follow Jesus example of gathering all into grace. Let us not grow weary of speaking of hope and peace. We will go to sow the Spirit s seed of life and hope. Go now, and proclaim that the reign of God is near. Travel lightly, but bear one another s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. The Blessing is 2001 Nathan Nettleton and posted on LaughingBird. -24-

Work for the good of all, avoid temptation, and pray that God will send more laborers into the harvest. And may God give you mercy and peace; May Christ Jesus give you power over all that would harm you; And may the Holy Spirit produce within you a rich harvest of joy and life. Amen.
