5 We Proclaim and Respond to the Word of God A Reading from Acts [8:26-40] An angel of the Lord said to Philip, Get up and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. (This is a wilderness road.) So he got up and went. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of the Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning home; seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. Then the Spirit said to Philip, Go over to this chariot and join it. So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked, Do you understand what you are reading? He replied, How can I, unless someone guides me? And he invited Philip to get in and sit beside him. Now the passage of the scripture that he was reading was this: Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and like a lamb silent before its shearer, so he does not open his mouth. In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can Please be seated. describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth. The eunuch asked Philip, About whom, may I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else? Then Philip began to speak, and starting with this scripture, he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. As they were going along the road, they came to some water; and the eunuch said, Look, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized? He commanded the chariot to stop, and both of them, Philip and the eunuch, went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he was passing through the region, he proclaimed the good news to all the towns until he came to Caesarea. Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s People. People: Thanks be to God. Psalm 22: I will praise God in the great assembly; * I will honor God in the congregation. 25 The poor shall eat and be satisfied, and those who seek you shall be blessed; * they shall never be discouraged. 26 All the ends of the earth shall return to you; * all the families of the nations shall stand before you. 27 All peoples belong to the Holy One, * for God created everything that is. The Psalm is read responsively by whole verse. -5-

6 28 All who are born shall come before you; * all who go down to the dust shall worship you. 29 Our descendants shall follow the Holy One; * they shall be known as God s forever. 30 They shall proclaim to a people yet unborn * God s faithfulness throughout all ages. A Reading from 1 John [4:7-21] Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. God s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and do testify that the Father has sent his Son as the Savior of the world. God abides in those who confess that Jesus is the Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s People. People: Thanks be to God. Sequence Music A Reading from the Holy Gospel [John 15:1-8] Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to John. People: Glory to you, O Christ. Diácono: Santo Evangelio de nuestro Salvador Jesucristo, según Juan. Pueblo: Gloria a ti, Cristo! Jesus said to his disciples, I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower. He removes every branch in me that bears no Son of God, and they abide in God. So we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them. Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness on the day of judgment, because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love. We love because he first loved us. Those who say, I love God, and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. 7 you. Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. Deacon: The Gospel of Jesus Christ. People: Praise to you, O Christ. Diácono: El Evangelio del Jesucristo. Pueblo: Te alabamos, Cristo. The Sermon A period of silence follows the Sermon, marked with meditation bell. The Nicene Creed Please be seated. Preacher: The Rev. Steve Keplinger The people may stand. The Nicene Creed is a historical statement of faith used by the early Christian community to define orthodoxy. Please join us as you feel called. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. -7-

8 On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son]. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Filioque (Latin for and the son ), the dogmatic formula expressing the double procession of the Holy Spirit, was added to the Nicene Creed by the Western church. Prayers of the People Parish prayer intercessions may be found on page 35. The Prayers of the People were adapted by The Rev. Claudia Heath and The Rev. Steve Keplinger for Grace St. Paul s from Prayers used by New Song Episcopal Church in Coralville, Iowa. Each prayer is intended to be read by a different member of the congregation. 11 Table Chant The people may stand. The Great Thanksgiving The Great Thanksgiving is Eucharistic Prayer 1 from Enriching Our Worship. The Preface to the Prayer is adapted from The Book of Common Prayer. Celebrant: God is with us. People: God is present here. Celebrant: Rejoice! Lift up your hearts. People: We lift our hearts to the Most High. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Holy One. People: It is right to offer thanks and praise. Celebrant: It is truly right, and good and joyful, to give you thanks, all-holy God, source of life and fountain of mercy. But chiefly we are bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ. By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life. Therefore, joining with Angels and Archangels and with the faithful of every generation, we lift our voices with all creation as we say: Celebrant and People: Holy, holy, holy God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. -11-

12 The Celebrant continues Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful caretakers and show forth your bountiful grace. But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected your love. Celebrant and People: Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation for all people. Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your promise of salvation. Celebrant: Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life. At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated. On the night before he died for us, Our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said: Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said: Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Deacon: Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant and People: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Celebrant continues Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with Paul, -12-

13 Catherine of Siena, Sarah Josepha Buell Hale, the Apostles Philip and James, Athanasius, Monnica, * and all your saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN. The Lord s Prayer (traditional) Deacon: As our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray, Deacon and People: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Fraction Anthem Celebrant: This is the bread that gives life to the world. People: Happy are those who are called to this table. The people may stand. The Fraction Anthem was adapted from anthems in Enriching Our Worship by The Rev. Steve Keplinger * Catherine of Siena was a 14th-century mystic who centered her life on prayer and meditation. She devoted her time to caring for leprosy and cancer patients, as well as visiting prisoners condemned to death. Sarah Josepha Buell Hale was a 19th-century American editor and prophetic witness who worked for the ministry of women in the Episcopal church and the recognition of the influence of women in society. She is also remembered for preserving American historical monuments, working for the nationalization of the Thanksgiving holiday, and her publication of children s literature for Sunday School, including the poem Mary had a Little Lamb. Philip and James are known to us from the list of the Twelve Apostles. James is called the son of Alpheus. Philip appears in several stories in the Gospel of John. Athanasius was a fourth-century Bishop of Alexandria who was the major influence in settling the controversy at the Council of Nicea and the wording of the Nicene Creed. Monnica was the mother of Augustine of Hippo and was chiefly responsible for his conversion to Christianity. -13-

The Easter litany, Every Day Is Easter, was adapted from Roddy Hamilton, and posted on Mucky Paws, When Thomas saw the wounds and was set free it was Easter day When Peter s three yes s to Jesus finished his three denials it was Easter day When Mary was ready to embalm the dead and ran in fear from the empty tomb it was Easter day When the disciples looked from afar at a breakfast of fish on the beach it was Easter day

23 When Emmaus became synonymous with welcome and the breaking of bread with strangers it was Easter day When Paul was blinded by the light and recognized the voice niggling in his head it was Easter day When the hungry are fed at the table the same table as the rich it is Easter day When weapons are beaten to ploughshares and peace is a word to be shouted it is Easter day When the stranger is welcomed in community and the lonely are restored to relationship it is Easter day Amen. 27 The Great Thanksgiving The first half of the Eucharistic Prayer is from Prayers for an Inclusive Church by Steven Shakespeare. The Preface at the beginning of the Prayer is by Nathan Nettleton. The Prayer following the Sanctus is Eucharistic Prayer I in Enriching Our Worship, Church Publishing. Celebrant: God is with us. People: God is present here. Celebrant: Rejoice! Lift up your hearts. People: We lift our hearts to the Most High. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Holy One. People: It is right to offer thanks and praise. Celebrant: We praise you, God of freedom, for you breathed life into the void and showed yourself as the one who loves in freedom. We give thanks for your risen Son, Jesus, who was dead and buried, but who you raised and who is alive forever, reaching out to us, wiping away our tears and calling us by name. From the nothingness of slavery you called a people into being and led them to springs of life; the presence of your glory went with shattered exiles into strange and distant lands and gathered from the valley of despair the flesh and blood of living hope. In Jesus, you confronted the powers that killed and oppressed; you spoke to those considered dead and helped them stand again; he taught us to die that we might live. He gave himself for us tortured and forsaken, but he could not be confined by death; in the garden he speaks our name, in the breaking of the bread he shows himself among us; by the lakeside, in the new day, he calls us to take up his work. Therefore, with all who lost faith, all who walked away in sadness, with the women at the tomb, and the men who hid in fear we confess ourselves surprised by the suddenness of dawn and join the undying song of heaven: -27-

28 Sanctus (Holy) The Celebrant continues: Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. People and Celebrant: Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation for all people. Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your promise of salvation. Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus. The Celebrant continues: Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life. -28-

29 At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated. Deacon: Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: All: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again The Celebrant continues Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with Paul, Catherine of Siena, Sarah Josepha Buell Hale, the Apostles Philip and James, Athanasius, Monnica, * and all your saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN. * Catherine of Siena was a 14th-century mystic who centered her life on prayer and meditation. -29-

People: Happy are those who are called to this table. The Invitation to Communion Celebrant: The Communion The gifts of God for the people of God. 32 Sending Eucharistic Visitors After communion, the service resumes here. The Celebrant may name the Eucharistic Visitors and those who may receive Holy Communion at home. All say together: We send you forth bearing these Holy Gifts. May those to whom you go share with us in the Communion of Christ s Body and Blood. We who are many are one body, because we all share one bread, one cup. Postcommunion Prayer Celebrant: The people may stand. The Postcommunion Prayer was written by Stephen M. Fearing, and posted on Wild and Precious Life, Let us pray. People: Resurrected God, though we have hidden ourselves in a locked room and huddled together as ones who build barriers, send your Living Word through our locked doors and into our guarded hearts that we might be witnesses of your grace and couriers of your goodness. Blessing By the power of your Holy Spirit, grant us the trust to believe the Gospel not because we see it but because we have been seen by it and transformed through it. Amen. Celebrant: Go now, and love one another, because love is from God. Proclaim God s salvation to every generation. Remain in Jesus Christ, and like branches of a vine, draw your life from him. The Blessing is Adapted from Nathan Nettleton, LaughingBird.net. And may God the vine grower tend you and make you fruitful; May Christ Jesus abide in you and give you life; And may the Holy Spirit cast out all fear and fill you with God s love. Amen. -32-

Join us for a class experience at GSP each week in which we will undertake a shared conversation about what matters most to us as followers of Jesus. We will utilize a variety of media resources and each class will focus on a different aspect of Christian faith, allowing for plenty of time for questions, discussion, and sharing.
