I will need your help to attain this goal. We had 2 new Knights join our ranks in July Michael Rossario and Ron Kohler. I look forward to working with them on upcoming events. We should reach out to our catholic brothers who are not Knights and encourage them to join. We need quality membership, brother Knights who are willing to help us in our endeavors. You will hear the excuse that someone does not have the time. I can tell you from experience, that the time to help out can come later in life. I joined the Knights of Columbus 47 years ago, however, I can proudly say I became a Knight when I joined this council. This council is very active and it is this activity that revitalized me and gave a purpose to my life! We should be proud of what we do and proclaim that we are Knights of Columbus. At our July meeting we again approved the wearing of Council Shirts for masses on the first full weekend of every month. I wear my Council shirt to every mass I attend and hope some of you will also do this. July was our Blood Drive at O.L.Q.A. We were able to get 11 pints from our donors. We are also up to 92 hours for our annual Pledge of 1000 Grand Knight s Message Adoration Hours for Father Andy. The Adoration Chapel is a remarkable place to relax from our everyday lives and communicate with God. We have the Special Olympics Bowling event coming up on September 13 th. At the July meeting, which was well attended, we only had a few people sign up for the morning session and none for the afternoon session. The morning session runs 8:00 AM noon, and the afternoon session runs from 12:30 PM 4:00 PM. We need a few more volunteers for the morning session and a lot more volunteers for the afternoon session. We will have the signup sheets at the August 25 th Council meeting. Please step up and volunteer for this event. It also counts for the Pro-Life Award, however, we should be helping out because it is the right thing to do, not for recognition. We have the Parish Retreat coming up at the end of February. The dates are February 27 th, 28 th and March 1 st. I am including the registration form at the end of this newsletter. If you are able, please consider joining your brother Knights for this event. Again, I am looking forward to this new year and hope that I will have your support and help with making everything we do a success. Vivat Jesus, S/K Robert A. Cataldo Grand Knight A U G U S T

P A G E 2 Upcoming Events Feast of the Assumption August 15, 2014 at Our Lady Queen of the Apostles Officer s Meeting August 11, 2014 at 7:30PM in Festival Hall General Meeting August 25, 2014 at 7:30PM in Festival Hall Deputy Grand Knight s Message K N I G H T S O F C O L U M B U S C O U N C I L # I Look forward to seeing my Brother Knights in the upcoming year and see how much you have grown spiritually in the parish and with your families. July and August are slow months for us as Knights, so this is a time for us to sit down and think of what we can do as good Catholic Gentlemen to help us improve on our council. There are many events coming up this year you can give a couple of hours of your time to. So please Brothers think of how you can help spend your time with us. Here is a list of some of the upcoming events: Spaghetti Dinner, Special Olympics Bowling, Fall Festival, Breakfast with Santa, and many more. We have over 200 Hundred members in our council an about 25 per cent of the members attend our monthly meeting. If you take away the Officers, we only have about 15 per cent or a little bit more that attend our meeting. So please Brothers, talk to your Brother Knights and see if you can get more to attend these meeting. They pay their dues, but they don't come. It would be very beneficial for them to come. As you know we had our installation ceremony July and we had a great turn out. We welcomed the new Officers and honored the outgoing ones. I want to thank our past Grand Knight, Martin J. Farraher for a great job done. He is what I call a true Catholic Gentleman. Thank you again for your time and generosity. Father McGivney's documentary is now available, It is on sale at Amazon.com. Dress code at the meeting is Council Shirt, Long Pants, Shoes, NO SHORTS. I would like to tell you a little story about me. After the 9:45 mass, I go and sit down with some of my friends and have a donut and a good conversation with them. As I Look around I see different families talking and laughing and children running around. It make me feel good inside, because this is what I call Spirituality, Charity, Fraternity and Patriotism. This is what the Knights of Columbus is made of. August is the Knights of Columbus family week to celebrate all aspects of the family week which is the foundation of society and of fundamental importance to the Knights of Columbus. So enjoy each other's company and have fun. May the peace of Christ be with you and your family S/K John E. Sykes Deputy Grand Knight

P A G E 4 K N I G H T S O F C O L U M B U S C O U N C I L # Chancellor s Report Dear Brothers, August, 2014 Being born Catholic, Baptized Catholic, raised Catholic by my parents and even attending Catholic school from 1 st to 12 th grade I thought I really knew a lot about the Catholic religion. Since being your Chancellor for the last several years and having the responsibility of giving an encouraging report at each monthly meeting. It has made me read more and learn things about my faith that I did not know and try to share them with you. I have also had the honor and challenge of speaking before our worth lecturer Bob Laquerre. Bob has been explaining the Mass to us part by part for over the last year. I have learned many things about our beautiful mass that I never knew and look forward each month to his talk. Bob and I try to read and learn different things about our faith and religion and bring them to the meeting to share and enlighten you about the beauty of your faith. I have just started reading Pope Francis encyclical The Joy of the Gospel that was recommended to me by our Chaplin Fr. Harry. I would like to share with you the first paragraph of Pope Francis encyclical. The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus. Those who accept his offer of salvation are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness and loneness. With Christ joy is constantly born anew. In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church s journey in years to come. Pope Francis goes on to encourage us to evangelize in a missionary style. To share the joy of Christ with all we encounter in our lives like it was the first time they were hearing or experiencing the joy and love of our Savior Jesus Christ. I would like to encourage you brothers to read and learn more about your faith and experience the joy of sharing it with others. Pope Francis calls for all of us to be evangelizers in our daily lives. To live the word of God and to share His love and mercy with all we encounter on a daily basis. The joy that you share will be abounded tenfold with the joy you will receive. I ask you brothers to be the evangelizers the Holy Father requests of you. Please remember we are all qualified to share Jesus love and joy with one another. I ask you in this next month to try to keep this task in mind and at next month s meeting during my talk I would like you to share with your brothers how you brought or shared the joy of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with someone. Remember the good words of Saint John Paul II, Do not be afraid, I am with you. May God Bless you and your Families, Kevin Moore Chancellor

Father Harry s August Message Dear Brother Knights: August,2014 P A G E 5 We ve all heard it: Evangelism? That s not my Charism, not my personality. Others make the excuse: I need more education first. That aside, we are called to evangelize in deed and word. After all, we are told in 1 Peter 3:15 Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hopes. We need to get over our fear of sharing the good news, to be aware of the spiritual needs of those around us to share Jesus love. Many more people are searching for this than you think: look up and see the fields are ripe for harvest ( John 4:35 ). Last year Pope Francis said Pope Paul VI s document Evangelization in the Modern World was one of the greatest pastoral documents that has ever been written to this day. Evangelization must be done in deeds and words, Pope Francis says in his first exhortation, the Joy of the Gospel, It must be done with joy and happiness. We experience from knowing what the Gospel means to us. An important part of evangelization is that it s something we partake in as a community. An evangelizing community gets involved in people s daily lives, it bridges distances, and it embraces human life, touching the suffering flesh of Christ in others. My friends, you are an integral part of the Church s community. Your examples can help work winders in changing men s lives. If a potential Knight is not in full communication with the church we must not ignore or neglect them. We must reach out to them with compassion and love. Any situation can be corrected. We must guide them in the right direction for in the depth of their hearts this is what they are seeking. To be in full communion with the Church can be a very healing experience. A fresh start to a more meaningful life. Be proud of what you can do. Fr. Harry D. McAlpine

Knight of the Year P A G E 6 Our council is blessed with Brothers who truly understand the charitable outreach message Venerable Fr. McGivney put forth 132 years ago. Like the saying goes, they walk the walk. They don t project a lot of fanfare or useless noise, nor do they look for accolades, they just do the right thing for the right reasons. They are in fact Catholic Gentleman and they make our council, any council, what it is. Here tonight we honor such a Catholic gentleman, a Sir Knight of Columbus. A Brother Knight who has worked, Chaired, or Co-Chaired every event we put on this past year. A Brother who is first to volunteer for the most charitable (taking Brothers to hospital visits), or menial (fry cook) of jobs. No job is to big nor to small, it just needs to get done and he does it. Throughout this past year this Brother has also been at my side through every event or function from its planning stage to its execution. From District and State level meetings, to all of the Degree Exemplifications of our new Brothers, we dutifully attended as a team. His assistance has been invaluable in the running of this council. Therefore it is my honor to announce that this year s Knight of the Year, now in his 47 th year of service to our Order, is your new Worthy Grand Knight, Bob Cataldo. Marty Farraher Past Grand knight

Family of the Year P A G E 7 Throughout this past fraternal year there have been numerous families who have contributed time and talent in support of our events and the council. Time and time again when a need would arise there was always a couple willing to step up and selflessly give of themselves and I thank each one of them. This evening we honor such a family. A family whose name is synomous with working for the betterment of our council as well as the OLQA parish. A couple who earlier in the year I suggested may in fact be clones in that every time I turned around one of both of them were always there at all of our events. Whether Charring the councils as well as Parishes major fundraisers, being an Usher, or a Lector, all the while employed full time while being a loving parent. They do not ever sit on the sidelines, not being involved, is not in their mindset nor a part of their vocabulary. They truly represent what it means to be a loving Catholic family, strong in their faith, and actively supportive of their Church. Therefore, it is my privilege to announce that this years Family of the Year is Susan and Ron Rizzolo. Marty Farraher Past Grand Knight

Knights of the Month P A G E 8 Throughout this past fraternal year there have been Brother Knights who have contributed time and talent in support of our events and the council. Time and time again when a need would arise there was always a group of gentlemen who were willing to step up and selflessly give of themselves and I thank each one of them. This month we honor a group of Brother Knights our Past Grand Knights. From Right to left Martin J. Farraher, Bertrant J.Lanctot, Ronald J. Rizzolo, Nicola F. Alessandria, Kevin F. Moore and Richard J. Meinsen. These men do not ever sit on the sidelines and are always involved with our events. They may not be visible doing a lot of background work, but they always lend a hand. They truly represent what it means to be a dedicated Knight supportive of the Council and their church. It is my privilege to announce that these gentlemen are our Knights of the Month.
