1 Central Presbyterian Church MEET THE MISSIONARIES Join us on Wednesday, August 8, at 6:00 pm Michael and Rachel Weller were appointed as PC(USA) mission co-workers to serve the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY) in For ten years, Michael served the PC(USA) as the Regional Liaison for the Horn of Africa, coordinating with partners in Sudan, South Sudan, and Ethiopia. In February 2017, Michael returned to the work he loves: training future church leaders. He serves in Gambella, Ethiopia as a teacher at the Don McClure Bible School and the Manpiny Theological College. Rachel facilitates the work of Community Health Evangelism (CHE) in both synods. CHE is a program that gathers people together to identify and use available resources to improve their health situation and to learn truths from the Bible leading to the life abundant that Jesus Christ promised. Ethiopia is the second most populous country in Africa. Though Ethiopia has struggled with issues of severe poverty and hunger, it had one of the fastest growing economies in the world. The economy is now leveling off, but a strong middle class has emerged. The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has worked in partnership with the people of Ethiopia since Michael and Rachel met in Egypt where they were each serving in the Volunteer In Mission program. After they married, Michael completed seminary and then pastored a rural church in Southwestern Virginia. They accepted the call to Ethiopia five years later. Michael was born in Durham, North Carolina and was raised in Norfolk, Virginia. After graduating from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia, Michael joined the PC(USA) s Volunteer In Mission program as a teacher at Ramses College for Girls in Cairo, Egypt. Then he completed an MDiv at Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia and became a pastor to the Stone Memorial Presbyterian Church in Marion, Virginia. Rachel was born and raised in Ethiopia where her parents were Presbyterian missionaries. Rachel served as a Volunteer In Mission in Tanta, Egypt at the Tanta American Hospital. She and Michael met while on a retreat for the volunteers at Mt. Sinai. The Wellers four children are now grown and live in the U.S.

So come out and let s experience the Holy Spirit together and see how we can be Pentecost people. Feel free to bring friends and join us for this time.
3 Page 3 Incorporation, Part 2 From Frank Aichinger We are on the road to incorporation as Central Presbyterian Church of Bristol, INC. For most people, there will be absolutely no change. We will continue to do business as Central Presbyterian Church. But we will have a layer of protection as we operate in the secular world. With incorporation, the Ruling Elders on the Session will become the Board of Directors of the corporation. All real property and assets are owned by the corporation. There is an annual corporation meeting to report to the congregation on the State of the Church. Almost all Presbyterian Churches have been incorporated for a long, long time. It is estimated that 90% of PCUSA churches are incorporated. Virginia formerly did not allow churches to be incorporated as the Constitution of Virginia read, The General Assembly shall not grant a charter of incorporation to any church or religious denomination. In 2002 the aforesaid section was determined to be unconstitutional, and the Virginia code and the practices of the Virginia State Corporation Commission were subsequently changed to allow churches to incorporate. We will be taking action to prepare the way for incorporation with a congregational meeting on August 26, At that time we will vote that the trustees of Central Presbyterian Church be authorized to transfer all property and assets to Central Presbyterian Church of Bristol, INC at the proper time. We will have an informational meeting on August 12 following worship for all who might have questions. Back to School Blessing Sunday, August 12, 10:00 a.m. Start the year off right!! We invite all students (preschool, elementary, middle, high school and college) and educators to bring your school bags, backpacks and/or lunch boxes to church with you to have them blessed as a part of worship. We will also commission and have special prayer time for our teachers, educators, and students for the new year.
4 Page 4 On Sunday, August 5, 10:00 a.m., worship will be a special time for our youth to share about their summer experiences at Montreat Youth Conference and on the mission trip to Grand Rapids, MI, as well as other events that have happened. The theme of the service will be Lift Every Voice. Our youth will be inviting us to hear the many voices, as well as finding our own voice and to speak in love. We will also celebrate Communion as a part of the service, and will use parts of the Communion service from Montreat Youth Conference. Thank you to all those who have supported our youth financially as well as prayerfully through this summer. We are excited about sharing with you. SCHEDULE: Aug 1 Wednesdays at 6 Music: Praise Team Aug 5 Central Hall Youth Service Communion Host: Fellowship and Dining Aug 8 Wednesdays at 6 Music: Hymn Sing Missionaries will be with us Aug 12 Sanctuary Teach Your Children Well We will commission teachers, students, and administrators as they begin the new school year and have Blessing of the Backpacks Host: Christian Education Aug 15 Wednesdays at 6 Music: Bluegrass Band Last Wednesday at 6 service for the season Aug 19 Central Hall Martin Dotterweich to preach Host: Admin and Staff Aug 26 Sanctuary Guest preacher (Ann and Frank Aichinger leading worship) Healing Service Host: Praise Team Congregational Meeting after worship Sept 2 Sanctuary Around the Table Communion Pot Luck Lunch after worship in Central Hall This is the last Sunday on summer schedule.
5 Page 5 Calling all youth (6 th -12 th grade)!! It is time to finalize our work on Youth Sunday Worship. It is scheduled for Sunday, August 5, which will be in Central Hall. We need everyone to be involved. Maybe you want to share about Montreat or the Mission trip to Grand Rapids. Maybe you want to lead the Children s message or to offer prayers of the people. Maybe you don t want a speaking part, but can help with taking up the offering or bringing in the Communion bread and cup and the baptismal water pitcher. But we need everyone! We will be meeting on Wednesday, August 1, at 7 p.m. in the Small Dining Room. Then we will have a rehearsal on Saturday, August 4, at 11 a.m. All youth are invited to a Lake Day party on Sunday, August 12. Make plans now to join us for a great day of water and fun. We will meet in the church parking lot at 3:30 p.m. and plan to return around 7 p.m. We will be saying goodbye to our collegebound youth and wishing them well as they venture into a new area. And of course, you can bring friends. Just make sure everyone has a current permission form on file. You can pick up a blank permission form on the Youth Bulletin board near the church office. PARENTS AND YOUTH MEETING We will have a meeting for parents and youth (from rising 8 th and older) after worship on August 5 to talk about Montreat for next summer. It is vital that we make plans now for the best housing. Grab some lemonade and meet in the Session Room. Bring whatever calendars you have. It is time to sign up to be a Reading Buddy! For the last three years, Central has been involved with the Reading Buddies program at Highland View Elementary School. As we begin a new year, it is time to sign up. If you would like to be a Reading buddy, there are application forms on Ann Aichinger s office door, or you can swing by Highland View School to get one from Sara DeBusk. The Reading Buddies program is a weekly commitment of 30 minutes to read with a child. Having a reading buddy helps children to gain confidence in their reading abilities and builds a relationship with another adult in their life. It is a great way to make a difference in a child s life. If you have any questions, please talk with Ann Aichinger.

FROM THE BELIZE MISSION where Central s Little Dresses and Shorts were taken Words cannot express our thanks for sending the clothing items with us. The children and their parents know they are handmade and that it took time to make them and for that it truly made them feel special having been given the clothing items. We had socks donated also and those were placed in the bags along with the dresses/shorts. We pray a special blessing on each person who had a hand in making the clothing, we ll never know this side of heaven what a difference it made in their lives. Again, we thank you, Yvonne Edwards
8 Central Presbyterian Church 301 Euclid Ave Bristol, VA Summer Schedule of Services & Rehearsals Sunday: Coffee Time Adult Sunday School Worship Wednesday : Summer Wed Worship 8:45 & 9:45 a.m. 9:00 a.m. 10:00 a.m. 6:00 p.m. No matter how you try, you can never plan for all the events that come along --like a major air conditioning unit that goes out in the middle of summer. The Central Hall unit is 23 years old, and in the long run, the Session felt it was better stewardship to replace the whole unit, rather than trying to patch things together. This will cost about $7,000. Music Rehearsals: Praise Team, Sunday 8:45 a.m. Sanctuary Choir Wednesday 7:15 p.m. Sunday warm-up 9:30 a.m. Central Brass Different times, ask Robert Campbelle We are asking that any who are able give a special offering to help with this unexpected expense. Please make checks to Central Presbyterian Church and mark your offering AC replacement.
