1 pursuing the YEAR OF PRAYER 2018 ST ANDREW S CATHEDRAL THE DIOCESE OF SINGAPORE Photo: Opening of the War & Hope Exhibition by Mr Richard Magnus, Chancellor of the Diocese of Singapore with members of the Heritage Committee. WELCOME A warm welcome to all members and visitors to our Services today. HOLY COMMUNION We welcome all confirmed members of the Anglican Church and visitors who are communicant members of other churches to share in the Holy Communion with us. Our practice is to have the Holy Communion by intinction (dipping of the wafer into the wine). If you are not partaking of the Communion, you are welcome to come forward to receive a prayer of blessing. Please keep your hands clasped to indicate that you are not receiving the Communion. CAR PARKING There are very limited carpark lots available within the Cathedral. Members and visitors are encouraged to park at the surrounding carparks on Sunday. PRAYER & MINISTRY If you would like to talk to someone or receive prayer ministry, in most Services this is offered either during or after a Service. Note the following: 7.00am After Service at Graham White Library, North Transept, Ground floor 8.00am After Service at prayer table 9.00am In Service 11.15am After Service at communion rails eleven.30 In Service 5.00pm After Service at communion rails CHILDREN MINISTRY Each Service has special provisions for families with young children. Please see page AUGUST 2018 ELEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY COLLECT O God, you declare your almighty power most chiefly in showing mercy and pity: mercifully grant to us such a measure of your grace, that we, running the way of your commandments, may receive your gracious promises, and be made partakers of your heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. 2 THE VICAR WRITES ON THE WINGS OF EACH GENERATION For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep Acts 13:36 It has been an amazing run of Solemn Assemblies, held in over 30 churches across our island over 40 days. Some were very simply led while others were more elaborate and well attended. It doesn t matter. More importantly, we are gathering to pray as the Body of Christ. Those who attended the three evenings in the Cathedral will be encouraged and inspired by the faith, passion and sense of His presence. Both in the assemblies in SAC and elsewhere, I notice that there is a Singaporean culture of corporate praying. It is spontaneous, audibly loud at times, especially when there is a wave of audible praying as people gather in small groups. When I was in Korea visiting a variety of churches, I notice they have a similar culture of corporate praying as well, which differs from us in Singapore in some ways. This "common prayer (notice my oblique reference to the common prayer tradition amongst Anglicans) language helps the Body of Christ to function when she gathers. One should no longer label it as Pentecostal or "Charismatic. It is just a way of praying that has come to dominate prayer gatherings. In our own assemblies, we were able to incorporate liturgy, dances and choir items. But apart from that, any non-anglicans who have been participating in other assemblies will be at home. Prayer unites. And may the Body of Christ continue to arise in passionate prayer out of love for our Lord, his Church and our nation. One feature which marked some assemblies is the participation and leadership of young people. I can see that young leaders are emerging and heard across many churches, including our own. The assembly led by our young people was in particular, very inspiring. 2 It has been my prayer that many young vision bearers and "peer leaders" will be found in SAC. I use the word vision-bearer as often the young are directed by those who are older in many local churches. The vision is given to them and the young merely do as told. A vision bearer however is one who has a passion for their generation or peers and leads them. Some have thanked me for giving place to the young to lead. I am merely leading from my own experience. By the age of 15, I was made to lead my youth group and it has been this way of peer leadership since then at every phase of my life. There were always older advisors in the background, providing the needed wisdom. But make no mistake about it, we were leading and bearing the vision for our generation. We made many mistakes of course, but through them I grew. I learnt to discern His purpose for my own generation, pray, seek His will, make decisions and more importantly, and for better or worse, be a peer model on how to live for Christ. Peer influence is huge. As we share the same cultural milieu, naturally, we are inspired by peers who live differently. And as I lead, I strengthen my muscles to lead in the next phase. This is one reason why we need to give a lot of space for the younger amongst us to lead and grow. We always say that they are the future church. I will say they are the church now! Take away this space and I will say that the local church will have a lot to lose in her mission, witness, community life and ministry. As an aside, those who attended the opening of the mini-exhibition of The Cathedral in the War Years" will notice many younger people serving in the Heritage Committee. This is a first ministep with more to come as this group is indeed passionate about heritage. To be continued on page 7
3 PRAYER HIGHLIGHTS WORLD Myanmar Monsoon rains have pummelled the Mekong region with Myanmar bearing the brunt of floods forcing 150,000 to flee their homes. Pray for those left homeless, for those who have lost loved ones, for those who have lost their sources of income due to the destruction of wide areas of farmland. Pray that rescue and relief operations would be able to get aid to those who need it most, and for the rains and floods to ease quickly. Pray also for the Church, for the continued spread of the Gospel across this nation. Pray for the freedom to worship and for many to have life changing encounters with Jesus Christ. Pray for God s protection over the indigenous church and for the 1000 students in the many Bible schools in Yangon as they prepare and equip themselves for ministry. Lombok, Indonesia Pray for the Indonesian government and agencies involved in the relief and rebuilding efforts, in the aftermath of the earthquake that struck the island of Lombok last Sunday. Pray God s comfort for the bereaved who have lost their loved ones and for those injured to have good recovery. Thank God for His protection and for the safe return of our Home Affairs and Law Minister K. Shanmugam and the 11-member Singapore delegation who were in Lombok. Laos A dam under construction in Attapeu Province (Southern Laos) collapsed two weeks ago. An estimated 13,000 villagers from many villages were affected by the flooding. It is a national disaster; there is chaos as the authorities have not faced such a situation before. Pray for relief and rescue work to be well and speedily organised, for good hygiene and health of those affected and for protection of the vulnerable elderly, women and children. DIOCESE Holy Trinity Church Pray for the Vicar Rev Lim Kek Wah, priest and pastoral staff to discern the mind and heart of God that they may lead His church to fulfil their calling in Christ. Pray that God will unite the hearts of members across all three congregations (Foochow, Hokkien and English) in the parish. Pray that every member will love God with the totality of their beings and submit to His will; that they will obey His call to preach the gospel in words and in acts of service to the communities around them. Light of Christ Church Woodlands Pray for Vicar Rev William Tham and staff to have God s wisdom and strength as they pastor the flock in LOCC. Pray for the members spiritual growth; for an impactful chaplaincy ministry with the students and teachers in Christ Church Secondary School; for God s favour as they reach out to residents in Champions Court (a nearby housing estate). CATHEDRAL Alpha Course (15 Aug 31 Oct) Pray that many will come to the Alpha Course and they will find the answers to their questions on the meaning of life, in Christ. Pray for our group facilitators to be channels of God s love and divine revelation to the participants. DCBS Special Study on the Book of Ruth (17, 18 Aug & 25 Aug) Pray for Bp. Rennis as he prepares to teach this course on the book of Ruth; that what God has laid upon his heart for the Church (lessons on Love, Marriage and Sex) will be clearly communicated, under the anointing of the Holy Spirit. Pray that as we are instructed in God s Word, we will make right choices that align to His divine purpose. SINGAPORE Thanksgiving Thank God for bringing His Church into a deeper level of communion with Him and a greater unity in the Body of Christ, through our 40-day period of corporate prayer and fasting. Pray that as His Church we will continue to seek His face for the welfare of our city, in our next prayer wave on 7 October. PLEASE PRAY FOR THE SICK Annie Dang, Khor Seow Hong, Marjorie Lau, Nancy Li, Barbara Rayney, Rene Tan, Joy Brett, Doris Proctor, Dr. Ruth Jeremiah, Anna Lim, Albert Lim, Janet Lim, Ana Pelaez, and Lim Soon Chye. Members who know them are encouraged to visit and pray with them. 3

Brochures are available at the Welcome Centre. For enquiries, please contact Mrs Patricia Aw at or pataw@citycomm.org.sg Continued from page 2 I was away on a vacation in the midst of this 40-day prayer season, something planned from last year. We celebrated our 25th anniversary and our wider family joined in later. I have to confess that I too felt the wear and tear of being here on earth for over 55 years. My joints and back were aching from the cycling, trekking, rafting (this did it) and lots of walking. I dare not complain for my young nephews and nieces took it all in good stride! The thing about being an elder is that 7 we are completed by the presence of the young. We are not truly elders if the young are missing. Or if they are present, miserable and still in need of the umbilical cord (one can almost spell it unbiblical!). When the young arise, the old know they have been doing their job. We won t take any credit though. We serve God in our generation, they serve Him in theirs. May the church be built on the wings of each successive generation.
