3 Setting Goals for 2017 Last year a friend suggested that I take a look at the web site and blog of Michael Hyatt. I m glad they did. Hyatt was the CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishers, a Christian publishing house that was eventually purchased by Harper Collins. That s when Hyatt departed and went into the business of helping people have better lives and businesses. Hyatt s blog is one of the most widely-read blogs on the internet for leaders and Christians in business. And one of his most common areas to discuss is goal-setting. You would not be surprised that he advocates goalsetting. But not the way most of us do it. His perspective is worth a few minutes of your time. So I have shamelessly snagged his December 9, 2016 blog from his web site to share with you here (heavily edited). Hyatt writes, I ve been an advocate of goalsetting for decades. Most successful people I know are. But then he explains that many people avoid goal-setting because it is uncomfortable to take a new risk, or because they have seen others fail and not achieve their goals. He uses GM and its 2009 bankruptcy as an example of goalsetting that failed. But then Hyatt explains what to avoid in goalsetting: It s safe and easy to stay in the comfort zone. And when someone else catches a vision for stepping outside the comfort zone and achieving something significant, it s uncomfortable to watch. I ve personally studied goal-setting for years and practiced it even longer. The cautionary tales are just that cautions not reasons to avoid setting goals. So let s look at Three Pitfalls Goal-Setters Should Avoid and will avoid if they set their targets wisely: 1. Tunnel vision. GM fell prey to this one. They were so focused on hitting 29 percent of the US market, they lost track of the rest of their business. But you can t set a goal in one domain of life that will undercut another. Visibility on the full range of domains at the outset can prevent tunnel vision. 2. Recklessness. Another pitfall is recklessness. Goals should be a little risky. Nothing spectacular happens inside your comfort zone. Difficult goals unlock motivation and prompt breakthrough thinking. But goal-setters should avoid what I call the delusion zone. Some goals are simply impossible. They don t inspire; they actually ensure failure. 3. Demotivation. Impossible goals kill our motivation. But that s not all. Sometimes we rely too heavily on external, instead of intrinsic, motivation. That can kill our motivation as well. So that s Hyatt s advice. And it is that last pitfall that especially catches my attention. Often as believers we rely on external motivation rather than intrinsic or internal motivation. We want to work harder, plan better, be more religious. But nothing ever changes, and we end the year frustrated. Why? Because we are not relying on Christ to change us, or the power of God to motivate and shape us. So as you go into 2017, set goals. Make them risky but realistic. Practical but visionary. But most of all, rely on the Lord s strength and His shaping power to change you. You cannot do that on your own. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me (Phil. 4:13). 2017! Well there is a magnificent opportunity to begin Come join your brothers and sisters in Christ in the annual Run/Walk For Food. On Saturday January 14 th, the South Brunswick Interchurch Council will host the 13 th annual Run/Walk For Food. Participants can either choose to run a half marathon or run/walk a 5k. The Run/Walk For Food will be held at Ocean Isle Beach, beginning at 9:00a.m., and will start at town hall. All proceeds from the Run/Walk For Food go to supporting the food pantry. FBCS is a charter member of SBIC, and a cornerstone devotee with the food pantry. On the second Saturday of each month, members of our congregation provide a nutritious bag of groceries to our neighbors in food distress. In 2016 close to 20,000 individuals will be served by the food pantry. The needs of this ministry continue to grow. As our Father leads us to serve in even greater capacity in 2017 and beyond, the needs and tools of the food pantry will need to develop further to meet that expanding opportunity to serve. So come Love One Another and join us for the 2017 Run/Walk For Food. The contribution to participate in the half marathon is $65, the contribution to participate in the 5k run/walk is $35.
