1 K N Knoxville District UMW March 2017 Faith Hope Love in Ac on In the latest UMW News, Harriet Jane Olson, General Secretary and CEO of United Methodist Women, writes that our history of courageous leadership is the backdrop of our work. As we steep ourselves in the gospel of Christ we are equipped to respond anew to the call of God. In the 21st century, women still need to organize for mission. United Methodist Women, we are the people and now is the time. Amen to those words and much gratitude for women like you who are brave and bold and always ready to engage in mission and to raise your voices. There is much work to do, and I know you are up to the task. We, as United Methodist Women, are always ready to study and to learn. There are so many great and informative books on our UMW reading list, and I encourage you to choose several this year and read, read, read! United Methodist Women are engaged in missions all over the world, and I ask that you help others learn about these wonderful missions and to share the stories of others. As is the case with many districts, we are losing members and units each year, and I urge you to work on your membership. Invite women in your church or community to a UMW gathering. Talk to them about who we are and what we do. Reach out and make it personal. And most of all, nurture one another. The spiritual part of our UMW is truly what defi nes us. You inspire me with your strong faith, and I encourage you to fi nd ways to grow spiritually and to promote spiritual growth in your units. We cannot be the women we intend to be without God at the center of all that we do. We have several upcoming events in our district and conference, and my hope is that you will make an effort to attend these if at all possible. These opportunities allow us to learn, to be together in fellowship and to understand more fully the concept of being in mission. Information about these events can be found in this newsletter. Thank you for being courageous and brave and bold. I believe our actions have far reaching effects and an impact that is lasting and meaningful. We are United Methodist Women, and we are ready. Faith, Hope and Love in Action ~ Pat Bellingrath March 1, 2017 March 11-12: Sisters In Service at The ConneXion in Pigeon Forge March 25: Poverty Awareness Trinity UMC in Knoxville April 1 : Time Apart - Rejoice in the Lord Always at Lennon Seney UMC in Knoxville Dear UMW: Could you survive a month in poverty? Millions of Americans live in poverty in the U.S., 384,065 children under the age of 18, live in poverty every day in Tennessee.(2014 U.S. Census Bureau Survey) Many more have incomes above the poverty line, but their incomes are still low enough to qualify for programs like Food Stamps and Medicaid. The recent economic downturn has seen unemployment rates rise and the use of emergency food pantries increase. It is difficult for those of us who have enough to truly understand the situations that families living in poverty experience every day the decisions they have to make, and the fears and frustrations they feel. That is why we are inviting you to walk a mile in the shoes of those facing poverty by participating in the Community Action Poverty Simulation (CAPS). The CAPS provides participants with the opportunity to assume the role of a low-income family member living on a limited budget. The experience is divided into four 15- minute sessions, each of which represents one week in which you must provide for your family and maintain your home. As one participant commented, "This poverty simulation dramatically demonstrates how much time and energy many families have to give just to survive from day to day. It quickly dispels the myth "that people would do fine if they would only go out and get a job!" The simulation will be held from 9a.m. to 12:30p.m. on March 25, 2017 at Trinity UMC in Knoxville. Please RSVP by March 13th by mailing your registration to Nanette Rouse. We look forward to your participation. Sincerely, Knoxville and Oak Ridge District UMW

2 Knoxville and Oak Ridge District UMW Social Action Event March 25, a.m - 12:30 p.m. Trinity UMC 5613 Western Ave. Knoxville, TN Cost: $10.00 Please make checks payable to Knoxville District UMW and send to: Nanette Rouse, KN District Treasurer 3301 Wilderness Rd., Knoxville, TN n.rouse@pembertontrucklines.com Registration is limited, please register by March 13th. The poverty simulation experience is designed to help participants begin to understand what it might be like to live as a typical low-income family, trying to survive from month to month. It is a simulation, not a game. The object is to sensitize participants to the realities faced by low-income people. Name: Address: Home Church: Phone: Oak Ridge District Home Church: *Childcare available (Ages: infant through 9 years) with registration: Child Name: Child Name: Child Name: Child Name: Poverty Awareness Registration Age: Age: Age: Age: Knoxville District The United Methodist Book of Discipline As a church, we are called to support the poor and challenge the rich... Poverty most often has systemic causes, and therefore we do not hold poor people morally responsible for their economic state. (Social Principles, 163 E) Poverty unemployment, homelessness, hunger, malnutrition, illiteracy, infant mortality, slums There is nothing new about poverty. What is new, however, is that we now have the resources to get rid of it. The time has come for an all-out world war against poverty The well off and the secure have too often become indifferent and oblivious to the poverty and deprivation in their midst. Ultimately a great nation is a compassionate nation. No individual or nation can be great if it does not have a concern for the least of these. 4 N O Dear Sisters in Christ, 1 John 3:2 notes What we shall BE has not yet been revealed. We grow, and we become as we engage. And, we grow spiritually with God and with our sisters as we get involved in things such as reading and studying the Word, through participating in praise and worship, promoting membership, nurture and outreach, and engaging in lifelong learning experiences that promote servanthood. This is who we are: servants. When we connect, we never stop learning to show the face and heart of God. Remember we have been chosen to invest our lives in His eternal glory. I see my role and yours, local Spiritual Growth Coordinators, as ENCOURAGERS we must generate enthusiasm for involvement in everything United Methodist Women do on all levels (local, district, conference and international). Such involvement builds character that is reflected in the faces we show as we serve, advocate and educate. As you develop a plan for growth, you will be become more involved. Here are some strategies to consider: I invite you to: 1. Contact the District Nominations team and learn how the team works. 2. Then, consider shadowing one of the officers where you learn more about what she does. 3. Ask prayer partners, shepherding your church for dates when the district team might conduct a spiritual growth program, e.g. Call to Prayer and Self-Denial, Charter for Racial Justice, or to be your UMW Women s Day program. 4. Exchange birthday cards with missionary names in the prayer calendar or bless a missionary by sending a gift to mission card. 5. Keep a list of your deceased members and forward a report to me, due on Dec. 31, Encourage your members to attend: March Sisters in Service Retreat March 25 Social Action Workshop April 1 Time Apart April 8 Wesley House Tablescapes May SEE at Lake Junaluska 7. Don t forget to use resources online for other ideas 8. Follow messages from your district officers in your Knoxville Notes. 9. Share who we are and what we do with young women by modeling, inviting them to our activities and involving them whenever possible. Paul tells the Romans not only to figure out their gifts but to concentrate on using them. (Romans 12: 6) Grow where you are planted. Be joyful, be united and be in prayer. Shirley Napier, Coordinator for Spiritual Growth A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial 2017 Exodus 1:6 2:10 In 2017, the offering received from the Call to Prayer and Self-Denial will support partners that provide programs and advocate for the health of mothers and their children. Programs may include prenatal and postpartum care, mental health, family planning, cancer screening and access to feminine hygiene products. In your call to prayer programs, remember to recognize and reflect on the women in our country and around the world who do not have access to even basic health care and services. For more info, look online on the UMW website and in the current UMW program book.
