1 Ka Leo Mekokiko Sept. - Oct 2015 Ka Leo Mekokiko THE VOICE OF METHODISM Hawaii District September - October 2015 VOLUME 34 NUMBER 9 CHARGE CONFERENCE Season is upon us! The schedule for the upcoming regular Charge Conferences is being formulated. Some will be single charge conferences and some will be joint. One major difference is that the pastor s salary package needs to be completed and approved by a special Charge Conferenece before November 30th. The special Charge Conference -- the date and time must be authorized by the DS -- may be held in conjunction with your administrative council meeting or equivalent or held before or after your worship service. This special charge conference will be convened by an authorized elder, preferably not the pastor of the church. Retired elders and other elders will be asked to help convene these special charge conferences. Simultaneously, the DS would like to go over the accomplishment for the year, review his/her appointment request, and the goals for the next year. An assessment form for the clergy will be ed and each clergyperson AND the SPRC needs to complete it before meeting with the Superintendent. Here is the schedule of the Charge Conference or Annual meeting with the Superintendent. If you haven t had a chance to arrange the meeting, please contact the District Office! 2 Ka Leo Mekokiko Sept. - Oct Ministry Musings from the District Superintendent ANNUAL CONFERENCE MISSION STATEMENT: Inspiring the World as Passionate Followers of Jesus Christ So All May Experience God s Life-Giving Love Precious summer vacation is almost over. It is good to have summer after long months of busy schedule because summer provides opportunities for us to be active outdoors and have memorable times with loved ones. Summer is also a good time to read books. In our Asian tradition, summer is known as a season for reading books. As a way to overcome hot summer heat, people in Asia in olden days grabbed their favorite books and retreated to cool places, like under trees (where they could find shade) and read. This summer I had a chance to read a couple of books which included The Way of the Heart. The author, Henry Nouwen subtitled the book, Desert Spirituality and Contemporary Ministry. Who said that we are lonely? How can we be lonely in the midst of the most modern technology and communication systems? However, Henry Nouwen acknowledges that we are lonely, as he points out the reality of a society where poverty and violence are dominating phenomena that cause us to build barriers between individuals as well as between countries. No wonder we are lonely in the midst of crowds. He says that we come to realize that our world has embarked on a suicidal journey. In this book, Nouwen introduces the concept of solitude that will provide us a path to going back to God through desert spirituality. According to Nouwen, we remain victims of our society, and continue to be entangled in the illusions of the false self. He further mentions that solitude is not a private place. Rather, it is a place where the old self dies and the new self is born, the place where the emergence of the new man and the new woman occurs. The experience will lead us to be a compassionate minister to others. Compassion is hard because it requires the inner disposition to go with others to the place where they are weak, vulnerable, lonely, and broken. To be a compassionate people we have to die to them; that is, we have to give up measuring our meaning and value with the yardsticks of others. Henry Nouwen concludes that we are called to solitude where we can struggle against our anger and greed, and let our new self be born in the loving encounter with Jesus Christ. It is in this solitude that we become compassionate people, deeply aware of our solidarity in brokenness with all of humanity and ready to reach out to anyone in need. This summer, I hope all of us had more time to read and reflect on our spirituality as we journey toward the Kingdom of God Fall is also a time when all of us need to return to our own spiritual home. I also would like to invite you to join with me on September 26. I will officially start new position in Hawaii district as your spiritual leader and friend. I look forward to meeting those of you who were away during the summer time. Grace and Peace, DS Rev. Se Hee Han District Superintendent Installation Service for DS Rev. Dr. Se Hee Han Saturday, September 26, 2015 Harris United Methodist Church 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM We have changed the location of DS Han s Installation Service to Harris UMC rather than Wesley UMC due to adequate parking for all. Worship Service will begin at 9:50 AM in the Harris Sanctuary and continue with a potluck lunch and a music program at 12:00 Noon in Miyama Hall. Please come and help us celebrate in welcoming our new DS Rev. Dr. Se Hee Han. All are invited to bring a dish. We will have tables reflecting the different ethnic cultures.
3 Ka Leo Mekokiko Sept. - Oct AS WE JOURNEY May our journey lead us into a new place, a place where new life and new beginnings are waiting to be discovered. Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ! Two weeks ago, I spent a weekend with a group of women attending the walk to Emmaus. Spending time with these women, validates to me that the body of Christ is alive and well in the Hawaii District. Even though these women come from all walks of life, they have one thing in common, they have such great love for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. These women do not only have the love for Christ, but are eager to share that love with whoever God puts in their paths. It's comforting to know that these women went back to their local churches ready to be Christ' hands and feet. Thanks be to God!
