2 Ka Leo Mekokiko Nov - Dec Ministry Musings from the District Superintendent ANNUAL CONFERENCE MISSION STATEMENT: Inspiring the World as Passionate Followers of Jesus Christ So All May Experience God s Life-Giving Love In this season of Thanksgiving, whom do you say thank you to? As you look back on your life, who are the people who helped you along the way? Who are the people near and dear to you who are helping you today? It is a daunting question to ask time to time in order to have a better attitude for life. It was several years ago, I was invited to attend the 5-day Spiritual Academy in Dallas, Texas for helping Korean delegates who will launch the program in Korea. Indeed I had a wonderful time as I experienced the rhythm of the Academy life once again after the 2 years of Academy for Spiritual Formation in The main focus of the lectures was about Prayer Life, which is based on Psalms and different patterns of prayer life. Especially, I was impressed and inspired by Robert Benson s lecture. Robert Benson is a writer, retreat leader and alumni of 2 years of Spiritual Formation Academy as well. In his lecture, he distinguished the subtle differences in the meaning of Holy Communion, Eucharist and Lord s Supper. He said that Holy Communion is a commemoration of the sacrifice made for us upon the cross, calling us again to self-sacrificial love for each other. The Holy Eucharist is the name that bears witness to our sense of thanksgiving for the good things given to us by Christ s life, death, and resurrection. The Lord s Supper reminds us that we are indeed nourished by this act and by the Christ who freshens and strengthens us with his presence. Then he went into a deeper explanation of the meaning of the Eucharist. It is called the fourfold pattern of the Eucharist and means the following: Taken, Blessed, Broken and Shared. We are told that Jesus took the bread, and when he had given thanks for it, he broke it and shared it among those who were gathered with him. Then he took the cup and blessed it as well, and passed it around to be shared among them. Benson emphasized that we must remember that we too are to be broken and shared for others. We are glad to be taken as His disciples or followers and blessed by Him, but we are reluctant to be broken, broken and shared for others. Henry Nouwen also said in his book Wounded Healer, that those who have experienced a wretched pain in their own lives can become healers for others who have also experienced bitterness and pain. When we discover persons who have depth to their religious character, we will invariably discover that they have experienced bitter disappointments, devastating hurt and heartrending loss along the way. These experiences, instead of driving a wedge between God and them, have created a stronger bond. They are people who have confronted life s ragged edges and instead of being crushed, they have actually grown stronger. I believe that we are not promised to be exempt from the pains in life, but that we are promised to be given the strength to overcome our trials, and to have God s guiding presence in our journey of life. Yes, we are confronted with various trails of life such as financial hardship, heartbreaking disappointment, loss of loved ones and betrayal of friends, but remember we need to be broken to be shared by others. In this season of Thanksgiving, I pray that you also become a blessing to others through your sharing. Rev. Se Hee Han District Superintendent of the Hawaii District For Charge Conference: CHARGE CONFERENCES FOR OAHU Forms: 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 10.0, 10.1, 10.2, 11, 13, 16, 17, Appendix J Forms: 5 & 12 (As it applies to your Church) Note: Please forward all completed forms to DS for her review prior to your scheduled Charge Conference. 3 Ka Leo Mekokiko Nov - Dec Social Principles to live by as we journey Aloha to all partners in mission and ministry. Grace and peace through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I have long wanted to write a reflection on the Social Principles of the United Methodist Church. The opportunity is granted. As a lay person, I m here to share with you, Social Principles to live by, as we journey. These are the times Our society today is characterized by images of unrest, brokenness, complexities, injustices, competition for power, insecurities, violation of human rights, war, continuing poverty, homelessness, gun violence, and many other socio-economic and cultural issues. At the same time, our natural world confronts us with changes in weather, climate, and frequent occurrence of natural disasters. Governments, agencies, organizations, and churches such as The United Methodist Church are doing their share to address issues, resolve conflicts, caring for the needs of people, providing shelters, treating diseases, educating, responding up to their capacity towards transformation. What would Jesus say and do, in these times? As a Christian, have you ever been asked what your stance and position on certain and specific issues? How do we make decisions and discern to follow the right and responsible way? The Social Principles of the United Methodist Church Taking an active stance in society is nothing new for followers of John Wesley. He set the example for us to combine personal and social piety we have been known as a denomination involved with people s lives, with political and social struggles, having local to international mission implications. Such involvement is an expression of the personal change we experience in our baptism and conversion. Excerpt from The Book of Resolutions of The United Methodist Church, 2012 The Social Principles of the United Methodist Church are statements in response to the issues and concerns we face today in society. It is a prayerful and thoughtful effort of the General Conference to state our position from a biblical and theological foundation. As the General Conference meets every 4 years, The Social Principles are reviewed and included in The Book of Discipline, to serve as a guide to our church action and personal witness. There are six major areas in The Social Principles: The Natural World, The Nurturing Community, The Social Community, The Economic Community, The Political Community, The World Community We are all encouraged, clergy as well as lay, to re-view these Social Principles. I invite you to search The Social Principles of the United Methodist Church. Or go to Continuing Conversation and Engagement On January 16-17, 2015, I participated in one of the six Social Principles Consultation hosted by the General Board of Church and Society. I attended the one held at Capitol Hill, Washington DC, USA, the other venues were in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo:;Maputo, Mozambique; Abuja, Nigeria;Philippines; Prague, Czech Republic. This consultation process participated by both clergy and lay people with diverse generation, culture and backgrounds, examined the current Social Principles and discussed each of the arenas with three guide questions: What role do the current Social Principles play in enhancing the mission and ministry of the United Methodist Church? How much or how well have the current Social Principles served to empower mission and ministry in our geographical area? (I referred to Hawaii District/Cal-Pac Conference when sharing experience and context) What might globally relevant Social Principles look like? It was a very enriching dialogue and prayerful discernment, the result of which would be a recommendation to the General Conference Thinking globally, and acting locally, these past July-August, 2015, my husband Jesse and son Justin visited several local churches on Oahu, first to join in worship and secondly to explore the extent of the practice of the Social Principles in local ministry and social action programs. I envision that one day or more, we will get together as a district or perhaps each local church will enter a similar dialogue on our Social Principles as we respond to the needs of our neighbors and society. As vital congregations, take a look at the Social Creed and incorporate for worship services. For God so loved the world Go, transform the world The good news is, For God so loved the world He gave His son, Jesus Christ that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life. John3:16 As the body of Christ, our mission is to make disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Let Us Pray: God our creator, redeemer and sustainer, we humbly come to you as you call us to be your servant leaders, to be the church who repents to social injustices and calls us to respond with compassion and effective resolves. Help us Lord, that we may live with social principles that are biblically grounded and theologically sound. For your purpose and glory, let there be peace on earth and let it begin with each one of us. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Be it so. Grace and Peace, Jailu V. Navarrete, Associate District Lay Leader
