One such image is that of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. To some contemporary Christians, the image of Christ as the shepherd appears outdated. Yet it continues to be a popular image. The question is, Why? Could it be that we moderns yearn for guidance, protection, and strength in a world filled with much chaos, violence, and fast-paced change? The liturgy for the 4 th Sunday of Easter offers the image of our God as shepherd : the one who guides us - not out of this world, but in and through it with staff and word, with overflowing cup and holy supper. There is a story told that one day Christ came upon a shepherd who was overcome with sorrow. Why are you so sad? he asked. Because I lost one of my sheep, the man replied, and though I have looked all over for it, I have not found it. It may be that a wolf has already devoured it. Then Christ said, Wait here. I will look for the sheep myself. With that, he disappeared into the hills. One hour later he returned with the sheep. Putting it down at the shepherd s feet he said, From this day on, you must love this sheep more than any other in your flock, for it was lost and has now been found. In the second reading for this day, Peter says to us, Once you had all gone astray like sheep, but now you have come back to Christ, the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls. (I Peter 2: 20-25) We are all the more precious to Christ because he had to go to the trouble of looking for us and finding us. On this Sunday, we will hear the comforting words of Psalm 23, The Lord is my Shepherd, there is nothing I shall want. From your interim pastor Pastor Brill 1

2 Council Notes Greetings from St. Peter s Church Council. He is Risen He is risen indeed, Alleluia! Easter Sunday has come and gone, and my favourite church service was well attended. Pastor Harold delivered a wonderful message of grace and salvation. A very special Thank you to Lynn Hoegy and the Sunday School for the special Raffle held in support of the Olive Branch for Children. Congratulations to the lucky winners. Spring has arrived in all its glory and the annual Arbour Day on Saturday April 22 went very well. Thank you to all who helped in any way. We were so pleased to see the great turnout at our Shelterlink service at Brodhagen Hall on March 26. Special thanks go to Linda Kelly and the Chamber members for providing the wonderful meal. And the congregation outdid themselves with the desserts. What a variety of sweets to enjoy. On April 23 rd the congregation was pleased to attend the baptism of James Richmond Leonard, son of Pastor Laura and John. We enjoyed a wonderful meal and fellowship after the service. What a great event on a very special day. Congratulations and thank you for including your church family, John, Laura and James. We are happy to say that our new treasurer, Glenda Morrison, is settling well into her position. There have been a few changes to get used to, and we thank Glenda for being patient with council as we ask numerous questions and need tutoring in the finance end of the church operation. Updates will be forthcoming as they are available. One such change is the designation of loose offering given. Council voted to change the 4 th Sunday of each month from Archive Sunday to Cemetery Sunday. The designation schedule is now: 1 st Sunday LAMP, 2 nd Sunday - Partners in Mission, 3 rd Sunday - Youth, 4 th Sunday - Cemetery, 5 th Sunday - LAMP. Any bills to be handed in for payment can be given to any Church Council member, Susan Alexander or Joan Beuermann, and we will make sure that Glenda receives them. Council would like to bring the following upcoming events to your attention. May 7- Deb McCracken from The Olive Branch in Tanzania will be joining us for morning service and will be bringing a message and some very special jewellery for us to see. May 14 - Mother s Day Mobility Bus* May 28 - Congregational Picnic June 4 - Confirmation Sunday June 11 Trinity Sunday- Mobility Bus* June 18 - Car Show July 2 - Campground Service- date to be confirmed July 16 Mobility Bus* *Please let Deb Elligsen or Joan Beuermann know if you wish to be included on the Mobility bus list. 3 Note from Fundraising Committee Upcoming Event: The fundraising committee is once again having a Bring your antique car or truck to church Sunday on June 18. After church we will be having a barbeque and silent auction as we did last year. Last year we raised over $ and all the proceeds raised from the silent auction and meal goes right back into St. Peter s for church improvements. On June 18, we hope to have parking for all of the antiques close to the church so young and old can have a peak. If you know someone that may enjoy bringing something or just want to come to check it out; please bring them along. The more the better If you or someone you know would like to donate to our silent auction or have any questions regarding this wonderful fundraising event, please contact a committee member below. If possible we would like all donations by June 4 so we can have things organized ahead of time. We look forward to seeing you on June 18. News from the Pews Recap of March/April at St. Peter s Sunday, March 19 Poor Man s lunch hosted by the Youth Group. Donations to the Food Bank were accepted. Thank you to all who attended and donated. Saturday, March 25 Cleaning of the interior of the church. Thank you to all who brought supplies and supplied elbow grease. Sunday, March 26 Shelterlink service at the Brodhagen Hall with speakers Bev Hagedorn and guest. $1,920 raised for Shelterlink. Sunday, April 16 The Sunday School raffled their gift baskets on Easter Sunday. $740 was raised for The Olive Branch for Children. Thank you to all of those who bought tickets and congratulations to the winners. Sunday, April 30 Members of the North Perth/ Huron East Women s Institute participated in the church service with speaker Ken Wagler speaking about his work drilling wells in Africa and India. Lunch was provided by the Women s Institute. 4 SYMPATHY To Kim, Emme, Kathy, Dan, Megan and family on the death of Nita Leonhardt. The funeral was held at the church on March 18th, To Earl, Laura and family on the death of Bradley Bennewies. The funeral was held at the church on April 20 th, To Mary Ann and Mark Rose on the death of Mary Ann s father Dirk Brink. The funeral was held in Mitchell on April 29 th, CONGRATULATIONS To Lloyd Beuermann who celebrated his 80 th birthday with an open house at the Ritz Lutheran Villa. To James Richmond Leonard on his baptism on April 23 rd. James is the son of Pastor Laura Sauder and John Leonard. Joan Beuermann Office Administrator The Four Functions of a Church Choir Director of Music Brian Hen wrote an online article about the four functions of a church choir. It is a very good read and can be found at If you would like to read the full article. The following summarizes the article. Function One The church choir leads and enlivens the congregation s song. This is the most important function as the author explains that we become what we sing. When we take words and put them to music, it becomes part of who we are. Therefore, it becomes imperative that we put as much of the Word into the bodies of the congregation as possible. Function Two The church choir sings music the congregation cannot. There are some texts set to challenging music that congregations need to hear, whether it s because it is comforting in times of crises, praising in times of joy, or inspiring in times of apathy. Challenging music requires extensive and usually cannot be done by the congregation as a whole. Function Three The church choir serves as a small group within the church for faith formation. When we sing together, a bond is created that unites us unlike any other activity. The author s choristers are expected to treat each other with charity and love. I expect them to act like Christ s love has gathered us into one. Function Four The church choir sings beautiful and challenging music to praise God and edify the congregation. It is important that when we sing we sing beautifully, because it touches people s souls. The reason that we work so hard to create beautiful music together is so that we can glorify God and help people experience a holy moment. Perhaps the most important sentence that summarizes the entire article is: A church choir s job is not just to sing beautifully, but rather it is to minister to the congregation and to each other in a variety of ways, helping to change the world into a more loving and peaceful place. There is always room for more in the choir benches if this ministry interests you. 4
