1 CHRIST LUTHERAN NEWS Mark your calendar! November 15 Pastor Chelsea s Ordination November 16 Stewardship Pledge Day November 23 Pastor Chelsea s Installation This November, we at Christ Lutheran Church have much to be thankful for. We participated in feeding our neighbors in Tacoma through Peace Lutheran Church s meal program with FLY (Federal Way Lutheran Youth). We hosted a community health events, bringing dozens of people to our building. We will begin a new era of ministry together as congregation and pastor. We will help to feed hundreds of hungry people through Project ReachOut. We will send quilts to people around the world. Yes, we have much to be thankful for. As Christians, we know that there is One to whom we are ultimately thankful for the blessings in our lives. Our faith tells us that all that we have comes from God. God is the primary source of all things- the universe, the first stirrings of life, our ability to think and experiment. Everything in our world, according to our theology and the biblical witness, comes from the first Creator of all that is. This perspective helps us to think about our resources in a new light. If all we have is gift, how are we called to share those gifts? That is the basic definition of stewardship: We give because God has given to us. Our stewardship theme this year is Growing in Grace. I love this theme because it so perfectly captures that idea of stewardship as a response to what we have been given God s grace, freely given. How is God calling us to grow in our sharing of God s grace with NOVEMBER 2014 one another and our community? This time we take to talk about stewardship provides an excellent opportunity for growth, both in our personal lives and in our life together as a church. With God s help, we will continue to grow this year in many ways. I hope you are as excited as I am about the ways God is calling us to live out God s mission for us in the next year! 3 Our Stewardship One has but to look around wherever you may be to see the wonders of God s grace. Amid the stressors of modern life, God s presence and wondrous gifts are with us everywhere, all day, everyday. We, as the beneficiaries of His gracious gifts, also have an opportunity as Christians to pass along that grace to help ourselves and others grow in grace. We do this by returning to God what God has first given us: our time, our talents and our treasures. With the many positive changes we have been experiencing, we are on a great path experiencing the power of growing in grace right here at Christ Lutheran. But it takes our collective resources to make it happen. In the next few days, you ll be receiving a mailing with your annual stewardship materials, materials to help empower your commitment of your time, talents and treasures to growing in grace. Please prayerfully consider your gifts and giving. Every little bit helps sustain our ministries and meet the practical budget needs we have in a time of increasing costs. Consider a stretch goal this year, sacrificial giving perhaps made possible by one less dinner out each month or one less movie or pizza or whatever it all helps. It helps our church and most importantly, it keeps us all growing in God s grace! Weekly offering is easier with Simply Giving Each holiday season, Christ Lutheran anticipates and relies on a seasonal increase in contributions. It is through the donations of every individual and family in the congregation that we are able to carry on our work now and throughout the year. If you need a convenient way to make recurring contributions or plan to make an additional gift before the end of the year, we encourage you to check out our electronic giving option, Simply Giving. As the pace of life speeds up around the holidays, you may find electronic giving a most welcome way to make contributions. To set up a recurring, time saving electronic giving schedule, please see Tom Hagen to complete a paper authorization form. It just takes a few minutes and assures your giving is uninterrupted throughout the year while making our planning and budgeting process much more predictable. Thank you for your generosity and support! 6 Christ Lutheran News November 2014 The ELCA: Who is Leading us and where are we going? O n Saturday, November 1, 2014, Pastor Chelsea Globe, Ann Murphy, and Ginny Kuhlman attended A Morning with ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton held at PLU. Sponsored by our Southwestern Washington Synod, Bishop Eaton spoke on Who is Leading us and Where are we going? Bishop Eaton began by telling us about her history and her path to becoming the ELCA Bishop. She also spoke about her vision for the ELCA, focusing her comments on Four Things (her phrase) she s been thinking about: 1) Church and how we do it, since worship is the heart of who we are; 2) Being Lutheran, and the distinctive voice we bring to the Christian journey; 3) Church Together, and how we function in ministry as the whole ELCA; and 4) Church for the sake of the world, saying that we can t hold Jesus close and just love Jesus, but we are called to live out our faith in service. A major theme of Bishop Eaton s presentation was Being the Church. Among other things, to Be Church requires the spiritual discernment to comprehend the Holy Spirit s leading. To this end, Bishop Eaton talked about the value of spiritual disciplines such as prayer, meditation, and Bible study. She also spoke about how the church has become a pixelated church, meaning that each congregation tends to act autonomously. She suggested that so much more could be done when we work to- gether! She also commended the ELCA document The Use of the Means of Grace, spoke about changes coming in seminary education, the changing role of the pastor, and the importance of spiritual development and self-care for all, especially pastors. This was followed by a session of pre-selected questions. Her answers were very well thought out, full of humor, and captivating. The floor was then opened to questions from those attending. Pastor Chelsea opened this session with a question concerning our new and younger clergy as to what plans the ELCA has to welcome and integrate them into a community of both elder members and an elder roster of clergy. Bishop Eaton immediately responded that she was now the chairman to head up this new ELCA Synod-wide formed committee. This got quite a laugh from all those in attendance but after the meeting, Pastor Chelsea said she was delighted with this response! (Yeah chalk a good one up for our Pastor!) The gathering was closed by our SWWA Bishop Richard E. Jaech who lead us in prayer followed by all singing ELW hymn #400 God of Tempest, God of Whirlwind. The three of us from our church were delighted and thankful for the opportunity to attend this function! If you d like to hear more about our experiences, do not hesitate to ask! 6
7 Christ Lutheran News November 2014 Scouts build 140 Lunches in 14 minutes for Reach Out! The assembly line was a blur as 18 Boy and Girl Scouts and their families rushed Lewis Hall on Saturday, Nov. 1 to help our neighbors in need. Reach Out provides seasonal shelter, food and case management services to homeless men and women in South King County. Thank you Scouts for your service to our church and community! Two more opportunities to Reach Out We have been asked to participate in this important community ministry again this year. We will be making sack lunches with a juice box or pouch, a salty item like chips or pretzels, a sweet item like a cookie, a fruit or pudding cup and a small spoon, and a napkin. The cost is approximately $2.00 per lunch and we are taking donations. Three lunch bag assembly sessions are planned in Lewis Hall at our church. Saturday, December 13 th, at 10:00 am 175 lunches Saturday, December 20 th, at 10:00 am 245 lunches High School Retreat Fri-Sat, Nov Grades 9-12 Camp Lutherwood, Bellingham. 8 Christ Lutheran News November 2014 Sew Inspired! Piecemakers is a group of CLC ladies who gather weekly to quilt for Lutheran World Relief. Those helping to make the warm quilts are Sue O'Brien, Carol Sutphen, Ramona Soule, Marilynn Short, Ann Murphy and Sue Hupperten. It as been a busy fall and more than 25 quilts have been completed and soon will be taken to Seattle for shipment to people in need of a warm blanket around the world. New tracking methods tell us just where our handiwork is being sent. We want to thank members of the Property team for their assistance with moving, repairs to lighting and preparing a "clip board" for easy display of quilts when taking photographs of each completed blanket. A big thank you also goes out to Lonnie McWilliams for surprising us with "sewing jewelry". We are so stylish! Piecemakers continue to accept donations of cotton fabrics, new/used flat sheets and crochet thread of any color. We continue to be... "sew inspired". If you would like to join the Piecemakers, please contact Marilynn Short or Sue Hupperten. ALTAR GUILD Meeting November 16 after worship If you are interested in being on Altar Guild or learning more about it, please join us! Music Notes Lutherans and Church Music the singing church Martin Luther wrote I would certainly like to praise music with all my heart as the excellent gift of God which it is and to commend it to everyone. But I am so overwhelmed by the diversity and magnitude of its virtue and benefits that I can find neither beginning nor end or method for my discourse Looking at music itself, you will find that from the beginning of the world it has been instilled and implanted in all creatures, individually and collectively. For nothing is without sound or harmony and yet, compared to the human voice, all this hardly deserves the name of music Next to the Word of God, music deserves the highest praise. Congregational song gathers people together to proclaim God s mercy, to worship God, and to pray, in response to the readings of the day and in preparation for the Lord s Supper. The congregation is the center of all church music. We are not spectators, we are participants. We strive to make our worship inclusive. The choir does not perform, the choir supports. Special music at CLC is selected to emphasize a reading or a theme, always aspiring to give the greatest praise to the one who gives us voice. Liz Smith, Director of Music Singers needed, especially sopranos! If you are able, and willing to make a commitment to the choral program at Christ Lutheran Church, please let me know. Part time, full time, extra rehearsal time? I d be happy to work with you. 8
