Important dates: Oct Youth Retreat, Mason Lake Oct Lefse Making Oct Homespun Holidays Bazaar CHRIST LUTHERAN NEWS Oct 2018 Last winter, we entered into the Imagine Project, a two-year process of congregational renewal sponsored by the Southwestern Washington synod of the ELCA. An important of the process is listening. We were asked as a congregation to spend time listening for God s voice through the Scriptures, through each other, and through our neighbors. And to be honest, I ve been a little frustrated by trying so hard to listen for God s guidance but not hearing anything back! The Imagine Team and myself, and many of you, have been asking God to show us the way forward for our congregation, so that we may enter boldly and confidently into the ministry to which God has called us. I have felt a little like the boy Samuel, waiting for God to speak so I could reply, Speak Lord, for your servant is listening! Well, I think God has finally started to speak. But God s voice isn t coming from where I expected. I haven t heard a booming voice from on high, or a quiet one during my prayer time. I haven t had a burst of revelation while reading scripture. Instead, God s voice has come from a place we least expect: outside the church. Remember a few weeks ago when I mentioned that there might be interest in our neighborhood for a Moms group of some sort? I met with a few local moms, who I met through social media, and after a few conversations, we decided to go for it and start this group. We had our first meeting last Friday, and it was a hit! There were 8 moms and 9 babies present (including Cora and me). We met in the nursery, and talked Therefore Eli said to Samuel, Go, lie down; and if the LORD calls you, you shall say, Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. Now the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, Samuel! Samuel! And Samuel said, Speak, for your servant is listening. 1 Samuel 3:9-10 Speak, Lord continued 2501 SW 320 th St. Federal Way, WA office@christlutheranfw.com ChristLutheranFW.com

Speak, Lord continued 2501 SW 320 th St. Federal Way, WA ChristLutheranFW.com Tues. - Thurs. 10:00am - 2:30pm Staff Pastor... Rev. Chelsea Globe pastor@christlutheranfw.com Pastoral emergencies outside of office hours: (253) Office Manager... Laura Olsen Music Director... Katie Stevenson Nursery Director... Diane Putts Custodian... Esmeralda Lopez Church Council President... Mary Hefty Vice President... Laurie Heinz Secretary... Guy Olsen Treasurer... Janeen Whitehead At-Large, Pos Sue O Brien At-Large, Pos Pam Wilson about parenting, pregnancy, birth, and more. We shared joys and challenges, sang a few silly songs with our babies, and created a safe space for these parents to bring their questions, fears, and longing for community. Some of these moms are new to the area and do not have much of a support system here. They were so glad to have a place to come and meet others who are in the same life stage. And through them, I finally heard God speaking. God has come to us in the form of mother and child, as God did so many years ago, answering our prayers for direction and purpose. We agreed to continue meeting twice a month on Fridays! Could it be that God is directing us to a new ministry for parents, children, and families? If so, this ministry will look very different from what has been done in the past. These families who need our support might never join our congregation, so just throw that expectation right out the window! And yet, they will still be a vital part of our community as we strive to love and serve all in Christ s name. When Samuel first heard God speaking, he didn t realize that it was God. It took him some time, and the help of Elijah, to understand what was happening. Perhaps that is what has been happening to us. God has been speaking this whole time, telling us what to do and where to look, but we are just starting to recognize that it is God. Where else might God be calling us to look as we consider our purpose as a congregation? In the neighborhood? At Decatur High School? At Olympic View or Twin Lakes Elementary? Where do you hear God calling you, in Christ s name? In Peace, Pastor Chelsea Parent-Baby Play Group 1st & 3rd Fridays Oct. 5th & 19th 11:00 - Noon CLC Nursery 2 Sundays at 10:00am

Saturday, October 20 Lefse making 9:00am - 3:00pm Thursday, October 25 Bazaar Set-up Social Ministries Greetings to you all! I feel like I need to reintroduce myself because of my attendance at CLC these past 3 months. (Actually had a dream that Council requested that I meet with them to explain myself, so I must be feeling the need!) God has given me the opportunity to continue to offer musical support on an as needed basis at 2 other churches so as long as I m able I rejoice that I can still use my gift. That being said, our Social Ministries Committee continues working on events for our congregation that not only brings us together in a common purpose but also contributes to church projects. Our financial focus right now is for chair 4 replacements. The proceeds from the bazaar (table rentals, raffle, and bakery) and Pie and Sweets Auction on Sunday, Nov. 18 will all go towards this goal. We ask for your help in being a part of these events if possible. We will be handing out yellow cards at church the next few weeks to ask for participation. Please fill one out and leave in offering plate. Thank you in advance! Mark your calendar Sunday, November 18 (during coffee hour) Pie and Sweets Auction God bless ~ Liz Smith, Bazaar Chair

CLC Sundays at the Theater FW Performing Arts and Events Center season Sundays at 2:00 PM (see list below) Have you attended any events at the FW Performing Arts and Events Center? We finally have a venue that is right here in our neighborhood, which means easy travel time, easy parking, and affordable prices to high quality performances! The Social Ministries committee would like to provide you the opportunity to enjoy Sunday performances, no obligation to anyone but yourselves. We will have a signup sheet solely for the purpose of knowing of others interested, maybe meeting for lunch or carpooling. Tickets can be purchased at the door so you can be as spontaneous as you want to be. Below is the list of SUNDAY performances. October 14 Federal Way Symphony Season Premier November 4 Tacoma Opera Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti December 2 Federal Way Symphony The Messiah December 9 JetCities Chorus Show January No Sunday performances This Pho- February 24 Federal Way Symphony - Winter Concert March 10 Federal Way Symphony An Afternoon in Paris April 7 Federal Way Symphony Season Finale April 14 Tacoma Opera The Elixir of Love by Gaetano Donizetti Community Outreach The abrupt change of seasons reminds us of the importance of homeless shelters. Once again, we will have an opportunity to serve in Reach Out Men's shelter by providing dinners and breakfast food to this mobile homeless shelter that moves between participating churches every two weeks. Sign up to provide and serve an evening meal to these men. Sit down and share food, fellowship and the grace of God with them. Our commitment to the shelter this year will be November 12-18, with more details to come later. We have continued to support Decatur High School with an ongoing supplies drive, and needs may change as the holidays approach. Look for updates in upcoming newsletters. If you have ideas about how our church can make an impact in our community, come join us on the Community Outreach Team. We meet on Sundays after coffee hour in the classroom (usually the third Sunday of the month.) Ann Jaeger Community Outreach Team Leader Serve at Reach Out, Nov ! Christ Lutheran will once again be joining with other churches and community groups to provide and serve meals at the Reach Out Men s Shelter in November. Reach Out is a partnership of Federal Way churches, civic organizations and community volunteers which provides shelter and support services for those in Federal Way who find themselves homeless. 6 & Cultivating Community Through Social Media On Instagram I have followers that I have never met. One of them travels the world for a living. One of them lives just outside of London with her husband and two year old son. Three or four are expats living in Tokyo. We like and occasionally comment on each other s posts. Many of these people that I have never met before reached out to me when my dad was in the hospital. They sent love and prayers over oceans and thousands of miles. Social media has the most amazing potential to bring people together who never, ever would have met had it not been for the internet. Social media can build bridges over oceans, it can create a connection through mountain ranges and deserts. Social media can introduce someone to a church community that they have driven past but never seen. It can do these amazing things, but only if we nurture it. Which brings me to my point, unless we have photos to post and stories Christ Lutheran on Instagram instagram.com/christlutheranfw Christ Lutheran on Facebook facebook.com/christlutheranfw to share, no one will connect with our church s social media accounts. Some of you know that over the summer I took an online class on Social Media for Business through Green River Community College. I decided to try to help with our Instagram account, keeping in mind what I learned in this class. I have had a lot of fun with the Instagram account, but would like to do more. I would like to help our community get to know us better through social media. So I need something from you. If you are attending a church event and happen to snap a picture or two, please send those to me, include a funny anecdote or a few sentences about how it went, if you can. If you have a story of God working in your life during the week, let me know. Together, we can show the world the things that make this church so special. You can send pictures/stories directly to me at kylie.whitehead@comcast.net or track me down during fellowship on Sunday! 6

Notes from the Bench Choir is back in full swing at Christ Lutheran! The choir is having a good time fine-tuning up their voices to make a joyful noise to the Lord in church. We started with a fun up-beat spiritual, "Home on the rock", which featured a lovely solo by Ann Jaeger. We have a good line-up of songs chosen for this fall, with a variety of styles and tempo. It s great to have the choir adding that extra joy in the service. Come as you are for social time with friends and neighbors. Bring treats and your favorite games to share. Coffee s on! Join us for Neighbor Time! Wednesdays, 1-3pm, Lewis Hall In October we will move on to the "Now the feast and celebration" liturgy by Marty Haugen. We will also be moving back to chanting the Psalms during the service with a cantor to lead. Using music software, I will be arranging the Psalm refrains to contain familiar hymn melodies so as to make them easy to pick up on. In the process of chanting, you are encouraged to find a peaceful connection with your brothers and sisters in Christ as you join your voices together in unison. A special thanks to our Worship & Music Committee members: Bill Wells, Pastor Chelsea, Katie Stevenson, Guy Olsen, and Christian Jaeger. They always put a lot of thought and effort to create a meaningful worship service for all members. As always, feel free to express questions and comments to any of them should you have any opinions you d like to be heard. You can music@christlutheranfw.com. Blessings, Katie Stevenson, Music Director 7

Council Corner Fair Chair Campaign Update Many thanks to additional generous donations for new chairs in Lewis Hall. We are much closer to our goal of $3500, with our total donations at $2500. Laurie Heinz posted several chair options (with pictures and descriptions) on the bulletin board in Lewis Hall. Please take a look and vote for your first choice, if you haven t already. Welcome New Members! November 4 OCTOBER 18 NEW LOCATION: Billy McHale's Restaurant 1320 S 324TH ST, FEDERAL WAY, WA Partner Liaison Report: We are excited to host a CLC all-partner Thanksgiving service this November. We will invite all groups who utilize our church to join us. Please save the date: Tue Nov 20th. Crazy Quilters of Federal Way will be meeting socially in Lewis Hall two nights a month, the 2nd and 4th Thursday, starting Sep 27th. The Crazy Quilters donate quilts to the Cancer treatment at St Frances, Mary's Place, and Madigan (JBLM). Ants Update We had ants visit our building late this summer, so we called out a pest inspector. Findings: no ants (they left), but access exists. Recommended action: pull bark/plant material back away from the building/siding to reveal 2 inches of concrete foundation. Trim bushes/plants away from siding/stone exterior. This will prevent ants from gaining access to the building. This activity has been added to the Fall cleanup list, and in the meantime, many thanks to volunteers who are chipping away at the work between now and Fall cleanup on Nov 10th. Quarterly Budget Update Please see Janeen s article in this issue for this quarter s update on the CLC 2018 budget. Mary Hefty CLC Council President 8

3rd quarter financial update Thank you for your continued support and faithful giving. At the annual meeting in January we approved a Expenses budget with a large faith income component (the amount between the total budget and what was pledged for the year). At that time the council committed to watching the budget closely and keeping the congregation updated. We are well into the 3rd quarter of our fiscal year and we, as a congregation, are giving more than pledged and spending less than budgeted. All good news. Pastor and Payroll expenses are down due to Pastor Chelsea being on disability and maternity leave and Portico paying part of those funds. Supplemental Staff is up due to having Pastor Doug and Pastor Kim cover for Pastor Chelsea. The other large discrepancy that you will notice is in the Beyond our Church category, this is due mainly to discretionary funds that are not in the budget. Feb - Sept Budget to date Over/Under Budget Income 85, , Beyond our church 3, , Building 8, , Financial fees Office/Miscellaneous 3, , Pastor 29, , Payroll Expenses 3, , Service Teams 4, , Staff 20, , Supplemental Staff 8, , Utilities 7, , Total Expenses 90, , Lastly, the Chair Fund is at $2, We only have $ left to go!! Please don t hesitate to contact me with any questions you might have. Hello! Yours in Christ, Janeen Whitehead Shop at smile.amazon.com (with the same shopping experience as Amazon.com) and Amazon will donate to Christ Lutheran. Visit the link below to get started! Sunday Servers Needed! Have you been thinking about serving during worship? Ask Pastor Chelsea if you d like to know more about it. Greeters, Lectors and Sunday servers of all kinds are needed.
