3 CHURCH-WIDE LEADERSHIP MATTERS... Join Pastor David in an online discussion through our REALM community. You can get connected at onrealm.org/fumcwp and join the Leadership Matters... group. If you have questions regarding Realm, please or visit fumcwp.org/realm. The purpose of this group is to update those interested in knowing more about the opportunities and challenges facing our church family. It is also a forum to ask questions about matters involved in leading our church. STEWARDSHIP LETTER Our 2019 budget was approved by the Leadership Council last Sunday and our Stewardship Initiative has some exciting news. Our total budget, revenue and expenses, stands at $4.5 million. That is $120,000 less that we budgeted last year. As you know, we have 4 Pillars supporting 28 Ministries. Each Ministry has its own budget that rolls up to the respective Pillar budget; and totals the church budget. Each Ministry can now better monitor and control their own budgets. Thank you to everyone who has completed their pledge for We have received 222 pledge commitments. The total dollar amount of pledges received to-date is $1.2 million. Our goal is to receive 300 Giving Unit commitments. We have not met that goal. However, the total dollar amount of pledges is only slightly less than last year. We still have the opportunity to make up this shortfall. We need an additional 78 families or individuals to make a pledge commitment. Now for the exciting news! The Trustees of the Marcy Trust have agreed to provide a Challenge Grant to our Church for 2019 Pledges on a 2 to 1 match. To read full letter, visit fumcwp.org/give. COMMUNICATIONS OPPORTUNITY The Coalition for Marketing and Communications (Communications Lay Team) is actively involved in the needs of FUMCWP and our ministries. As member of our vibrant family it is our joy to invite people into our community. The New Year is a great time to do this. SECURITY UPDATE We are all too painfully aware of how individuals with malicious intent have perpetrated acts of violence at places of worship and schools both within our nation and around the world. While these senseless acts cannot be completely eliminated, we as a community need to be prepared to respond during times of trouble. Our Emergency Preparedness Task Team has been meeting and will be implementing some additional security measures around our church and school campus. Visit our blog at fumcwp.org/blog to read about this security plan. JANUARY 2019 fumcwp.org 2

Using your online account, you can give electronically and track your giving and pledge history. If you any questions or have not activated your Realm account, visit fumcwp.org/realm or realm@fumcwp.org for an invitation. REEVES UPDATE Over the past couple of months we have been gaining support and working diligently with the City on our vision for the Reeves Property. We have settled the building usage and city code issues while gathering approval for all the permits and required property updates. As the year closes, we look forward to installing a sidewalk and a few other repairs that will ultimately be inspected by the City. Once our upgrades are approved, the City has 90 days to inspect and come back to us. In the meantime, we have already replaced the roof on the Counseling Center, taken a dead tree down from the playground, and secured a vendor to upgrade the yard. We are excited to see the expanded possibilities for ministry come to life at this property in the future. Check out our Thursday at Three e-newsletter to watch videos about Seeing a Way Forward from denominational leaders. ONE GUEST HOSPITALITY The desire to serve every guest as if we are serving Jesus Himself In the coming months you will see, hear and participate in making our church an even more inviting and welcoming place. Matthew 10:40 says, Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. What better way to welcome Jesus further into our lives than by welcoming others each Sunday into our church family. The visible members of our Hospitality Team are greeters, ushers, parking lot staff, and those who help with the welcome table and coffee fellowship; but the real face of the church are our members who worship together as a vibrant family each week. If you see a new face this year, reach out and welcome them to our church. We would love to hear about any stories or experiences that may have blessed your life from extending One Guest Hospitality. MEMBERSHIP We would love to have you join our church family! Contact: Jennifer Hatchitt at jenniferh@fumcwp.org. DISCIPLESHIP MINISTRY As passionate seekers, we understand the need to continually learn and grow in discipleship together. We offer a variety of ways to do this including event, studies, classes and more! Contact: Jennifer Hatchitt at jenniferh@fumcwp.org. KINFOLK (YOUNG ADULTS) Kinfolk is built on the idea that our lives are holier when they are shared together. Contact: Jon Tschanz at jont@fumcwp.org. Dear Church Family, In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus says to those gathered, Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. (Matthew 7:7) With that scripture in mind, I m excited to lead the Passionate Seekers pillar in 2019, supporting the ministries of New Members, Kinfolk, Connect Groups, and Discipleship. One thing I love about being a United Methodist is our focus on living out the greatest commandment, that we love God with all our heart and with all our soul and with all our mind. We know that it s important to use all three; heart, mind, and soul working together. Since joining FUMCWP 16 years ago I ve learned to ask questions, to seek God, and to wrestle with the Scriptures. I ve found that when we do, we transform our lives so we become Christ-like people who live Jesus way of life. That way of life, of course, is the way of love. I ve also learned that following Jesus can sometimes be difficult, because the second greatest command is to love your neighbor as yourself. I don t know about you, but that doesn t always come naturally to me! Fortunately, there s a question I ve learned to apply as I approach the workday, family time, or any part of life. It s simply, What does love require of me? When I answer that question honestly and sincerely, I know what to do. No matter where any of us are on our faith journey, we can all come together as passionate seekers, and as one family. I look forward to seeing the exciting things ahead for our ministries as we continue on the journey at First United Methodist Church of Winter Park. - Bob Atchison, Passionate Seekers Pillar Leader CENTER FOR CREATIVE DISCIPLESHIP For the month of January, the Center for Creative Discipleship will be focusing on Listening. This habit will help us learn to quiet our lives and our minds in order to hear God calling our names. We know that we find grace, affirmation and peace when we are still and listen for God. But listening is not just about what we get and the benefit to us in the present moment. Listening is a means of communion, of being present with God and learning to more fully recognize that God is always present with us. 4 WEEKS OF LOVE Monday, Feb. 4-25, 6:00-7:30pm Do you find loving others difficult? Do you find the thought of loving yourself impossible? We are told to love God, our neighbors, our enemies and ourselves. However, loving is not always an easy thing to do. If God IS love and we are made in His image, why is it hard to love? Deedra Boyer has 35 years experience as a licensed mental health counselor. If you want to learn more about love and connection, join Deedra in February for our Month of Love Workshops. Deedra will guide us through steps so that attendees leave refreshed and empowered to love as Christ loved us. 7 JANUARY 2019 fumcwp.org

9 PASSIONATE SEEKERS KINFOLK YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY Contact: Jon Tschanz at Pub Group 1 st and 3 rd Thursdays, Redlight Redlight This is a place and space for discussion and conversation over a good beverage. At Pub Group we have a very relaxed atmosphere with some great discussion on difficult topics. We believe that as a church we must not limit our interactions to our own buildings or even our own theological positions. You can find our articles on our Facebook page, Twitter, or you can receive them via by joining our list. Subscribe: fumcwp.org/subscribe Open Basketball Mondays, 8:00pm, MFLC Gym CHRISTIAN HISTORY WITH PASTOR DAVID Wednesdays, resumes Jan. 16, 6:00-7:00pm Pastor David will be leading a Wednesday Night Live group study on church history and how the church has wrestled with matters of theology and structure through the years. Those joining will listen to a 20-minute podcast each week and then participate in a discussion group. Join Pastor David for Wednesday dinner beforehand. Childcare is available. Register: fumcwp.org/register CONNECT GROUPS Sunday, Jan. 13, 12:15pm The Connect Group committee is hosting a luncheon to discuss our plan to form multiple Connect Groups. What is a connect group? Let s start with the history. The Methodist class meeting was started in 1742 when a group of Methodists were trying to pay off a building debt in Bristol. These meetings were divided into groups of 12 people where one person in each group was designated leader and responsible for visiting each person every week in order to collect one penny in order to pay off the building debt. As this plan was put into practice, it became apparent that many Methodists were not keeping the General Rules, which were: do no harm, do good, and practice the means of grace (i.e., prayer, searching the Scriptures, receiving communion). Similarly, many of the attendees happily experienced Christian fellowship for the first time. This class meeting quickly developed into much more than a capital campaign. It became a crucial tool for enabling Methodists to watch over one another in love and support and encourage one another. In fact, John Wesley thought the oversight and support the class meeting provided was so important, it became a requirement for membership in a Methodist society. Fast forward to today, we believe the new connect groups (and the existing ones) allow us to watch over one another in love. We are called to invite others into our lives so that we can grow in grace. We still believe we need one another in order to persevere on this journey. We hope you will make time to join us on Jan. 13 to learn more about our church s Connect Groups. Register: fumcwp.org/register (by Monday, Jan. 7) WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO THE KINGDOM OF GOD IF THE PEOPLE OF GOD WERE OUT OF DEbT? HOW MUCH OF THIS WORLD COULD WE AS BELIEVERS CHANGE?
