3 Order of Worship The beginning of the prelude is a call to silent preparation for the worship of God. 3 Prelude Genevan 42 settings by Paul Manz (The tune may be found at Hymns 87 and 481 in Glory to God.) and Johann Pachelbel Lighting of the Second Advent Candle Bonnie Blackburn, Amy, Jack, Joe, and Tess Szuba * Hymn 2 Come, Thou Almighty King Italian Hymn * Corporate Prayer of Confession Our God, who loved the world so much that you gave your only Son, we are humbled by this greatest of your mercies. Forgive us for not knowing what to do with so extravagant a gift. Forgive us for rushing by the manger too quickly to bow and worship. Bring us all to our knees in the presence of your Son, that we may be lifted to our salvation. In Christ s name we pray. * Silent Prayer of Confession * Assurance of Pardon One: Many: Friends, this is the Good News of the Gospel. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. * Gloria Patri (Hymn 581) Welcome and Announcements At the end of each pew is a Friendship Pad. Please indicate your presence by signing it and passing it along the row. Members, make a point to greet visitors sitting near you. Children s Conversation Children from age 3 to grade 3 are invited to take part in our Young Children and Worship program in Studio B on the mezzanine level. Anthem When Jesus Left His Father s Throne Fairfield (Southern folk hymn) Colin Farley, tenor arr. David N. Johnson When Jesus left his Father s throne, He chose an humble birth; A babe, unhonored and unknown, He came to dwell on earth. Let us, like him, in knowledge grow, In wisdom and in peace, Like him, in love, and faith also, As years and strength increase. Sweet were his words and kind his look, When mothers round him pressed; Their infants in his arms he took, And on his bosom blessed. Safe from the world s alluring harms, Beneath his watchful eye, Thus in the circle of his arms May we forever lie. - James Montgomery, 1816
4 Prayer for Illumination Beth Rom Scripture Reading 1 Chronicles 11:1-9 Then all Israel gathered together to David at Hebron and said, See, we are your bone and fl esh. For some time now, even while Saul was king, it was you who commanded the army of Israel. The Lord your God said to you: It is you who shall be shepherd of my people Israel, you who shall be ruler over my people Israel. So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord. And they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the Lord by Samuel. David and all Israel marched to Jerusalem, that is Jebus, where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land. The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, You will not come in here. Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion, now the city of David. David had said, Whoever attacks the Jebusites fi rst shall be chief and commander. And Joab son of Zeruiah went up fi rst, so he became chief. David resided in the stronghold; therefore it was called the city of David. He built the city all around, from the Millo in complete circuit; and Joab repaired the rest of the city. And David became greater and greater, for the Lord of hosts was with him. One: Many: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Sermon Harbingers of the Savior: David Rev. Kevin J. Long * Affirmation of Faith Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. * Hymn 268 Crown Him with Many Crowns Diademata Offering (See announcement pages for ways to give.) Offertory Comfort, Comfort Now My People Genevan 42 Chancel Choir arr. David Ashley White (The text and tune may be found at Hymn 87 in Glory to God.) * Doxology (Hymn 606) Old Hundredth Prayers of the People and the Lord s Prayer ( and forgive us our debts... ) Choral Response People, Look East Besançon carol (The text and tune may be found at Hymn 105, stanza 1 in Glory to God.)
5 * Hymn 93 Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates Truro * Benediction Postlude Truro setting by Ewald Weiß (The tune may be found at Hymns 93, 246, and 772 in Glory to God.) * Those who are comfortably able may stand. The flowers today are given in loving memory of Rol F. Kinney from his family. Thank you: Ushers: Jim MacDougall, Tim Merrill and Oliver Rea. Sound Personnel: Dave Breit. Childcare Workers: Morna Murray, Jamie Petro, Chelsea Safran, and Colleen Sipes.
