3 Order of Worship The beginning of the prelude is a call to silent preparation for the worship of God. 3 Prelude Praise You in This Storm Bernie Herms and Mark Hall Lighting of the Second Advent Candle Beth Johnson and Jenny Valente * Gathering Songs * Song 1 (see insert) Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates Otis Redding * Song 2 King of My Heart John Mark McMillan, Sarah McMillian Let the King of my heart be the mountain where I run, the fountain I drink from. Oh, He s my song. Let the King of my heart be the shadow where I hide, the ransom for my life. Oh, He is my song. You are good, you re good, oh. You are good, you re good, oh. Let the King of my heart be the wind inside my sails, the anchor in the waves. Oh, He is my song. Let the King of my heart be the fire inside my veins, the echo of my days. Oh, He is my song. You are good, you re good, oh. You are good, you re good, oh. * Corporate Prayer of Confession * Silent Prayer of Confession You re never gonna let, you re never gonna let me down. Our God, who loved the world so much that you gave your only Son, we are humbled by this greatest of your mercies. Forgive us for not knowing what to do with so extravagant a gift. Forgive us for rushing by the manger too quickly to bow and worship. Bring us all to our knees in the presence of your Son, that we may be lifted to our salvation. In Christ s name we pray. * Assurance of Pardon One: Many: Friends, this is the Good News of the Gospel. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. * Passing of the Peace One: May the Peace of Christ be with you. Many: And also with you Welcome and Announcements At the end of each pew is a Friendship Pad. Please indicate your presence by signing it and passing it along the row. Members, make a point to greet visitors sitting near you. Prayer for Illumination Clare Elste
4 Scripture Reading 1 Chronicles 11:1-9 Then all Israel gathered together to David at Hebron and said, See, we are your bone and fl esh. For some time now, even while Saul was king, it was you who commanded the army of Israel. The Lord your God said to you: It is you who shall be shepherd of my people Israel, you who shall be ruler over my people Israel. So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord. And they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the Lord by Samuel. David and all Israel marched to Jerusalem, that is Jebus, where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land. The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, You will not come in here. Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion, now the city of David. David had said, Whoever attacks the Jebusites fi rst shall be chief and commander. And Joab son of Zeruiah went up fi rst, so he became chief. David resided in the stronghold; therefore it was called the city of David. He built the city all around, from the Millo in complete circuit; and Joab repaired the rest of the city. And David became greater and greater, for the Lord of hosts was with him. One: Many: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Sermon Harbingers of the Savior: David Rev. Kevin J. Long * Hymn 268 Crown Him with Many Crowns Diademata Offering (See announcement pages for ways to give.) Offertory Psalm 131 music and revised liturgical translation by J. Fisher Oh Lord, my heart is not lifted up, and my eyes are not raised too high. I do not occupy myself with things too great or marvelous for me, But I have calmed and quieted my being. Like a small child, calm and quiet in loving parent s arms, Like a small child is my inner being. Oh Israel, hope in the Lord now and always. * Doxology (See insert) Doxology/What Child Is This English ballad, 16 th century Prayers of the People and the Lord s Prayer ( and forgive us our debts... ) * Charge (responsive) The cross...we shall take it. The bread...we shall break it. The pain...we shall bear it. The joy...we shall share it. The gospel...we shall live it. The love...we shall give it. The light...we shall cherish it. The darkness...god shall perish it. Amen.
5 * Closing Song O Come, O Come, Emmanuel Veni Emmanuel (Hymn #88) O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel, That mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. * Benediction Postlude * Those who are comfortably able may stand. The flowers today are given in loving memory of Rol F. Kinney from his family. Thank you: Ushers: Brad Caldwell, Gus Caldwell, and Lisa Edelman. Sound Personnel: Dave Breit. Childcare Workers: Morna Murray, Jamie Petro, Chelsea Safran, and Colleen Sipes.
