4 DeLynneations Giving Thanks I was born in Wisconsin on a summer day, They barely made it to the hospital in time, We lived through the coming winter In a small unheated cabin Mother walked to town some days for milk and bread Perhaps I toddled by the lake Or played under the wide blue sky And then we moved to Chicago Where I grew up and loved the horizon along the lakefront We picked apples from our backyard tree Mother has lived alone since Dad died Alone on a Wisconsin hill Watching the sunset across the fields Remembering how it used to be Now I am bringing her home From Wisconsin to Chicago again Home to where she grew up and loved the horizon along the lakefront. In this season of Thanksgiving She remembers so much And still loves the sunsets out the window For all our blessings, we give thanks. Happy Thanksgiving, Lynn NovemberFest! 3 (continued from page 1) Donna Taylor and our wonderful office staff for their continuous assistance throughout. Some special, special helpers who each did a lot of things: See Lam, Karl Irikura, Jane and Narcy Klag, Jenn Maschal-Lorms, Julie Graf, and above all, the inimitable Mary Lanigan. It takes time to shape an event like this into what we hope it will become. I think we are well on our way. Let s continue to enjoy the journey together! Quest 4 November 13, 2013

5 Soulful Noise Ah fall, crunching sounds, musky smells, and leaves bursting forth into a brilliance of flame just outside my window. In the last weeks, a feast for every sense has awakened with an almost gaudy flourish. I love this time of year. It is filled for me with wonder and the play of light. I can hardly believe that in the hurried tempo of life I have once again missed the opportunity to take a daily fall picture to catalogue this event. I want these pictures because I believe there is a deeper truth in this yearly event. A truth that I often wish I would remember for my own life throughout the year. Fall reminds me that as nature lets go, it takes this last chance to expose all of its hidden colors and glory. The green chlorophyll that has dominated dies off and suddenly all the supportive elements shine through. In this display of letting go, I can see that those supportive elements are just as brilliant. There are things in my life that I know I have come to rely on simply working. Things to which I do not pay too much attention. I trust gmail to manage my calendar and . I rest in long-term friendships and familial connections. I even rely on the quick smiles and generous natures of those around me to engage. These are the reds, yellows, russets, and oranges that support my work in service to ministry. As a continual student, ministry is what I hope is the dominant green of my life, but fall reminds me that these other brilliances must be tended, enjoyed, and acknowledged for their support. This is a shout out to everyone who has supported me thus far along the road of life. It is also a falllike reminder to let the brilliant colors of life shine through. Karen Brunch with the Minister Sunday, November 24 11:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. All newcomers, new families, and visitors are warmly invited to a light brunch with the minister following the worship service on Sunday, November 24. 6 REflections LIFESPAN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Celebrate our first Saturday multi-generational program and potluck! Attendees ranged in age from 1 to 89 years old. During our celebration of 2013 birthdays, we had the pleasure of celebrating Nicolas S. s actual sixth birthday. His mom said Nicolas chose to come to UUCR to celebrate his birthday. (Audrey Koch recited A. A. Milne s poem, Now We Are Six, to him to the delight of all.) Katie N. won the drawing and the book, A Handful of Quiet: Happiness in Four Pebbles by Thich Nhat Hanh. (We did one of the pebble meditations from the book together.) All over paper-covered tables, we wrote things for which we are grateful and generous acts we would choose to do; and then had to choose only one of each to write on the beautiful Gratitude and Generosity Tree although we could carry all in our hearts and perform in our actions. We were all grateful to Gwen Rowe s sister for the beautiful tree she created. The potluck dinner was delicious and the tables were humming with conversation. We closed the evening with a living tree sculpture and gratitude to be and to be together. Our December multi-generational program and potluck will be on a Sunday morning the popular annual Getting Ready for the Holidays, with potluck and crafts, on Sunday, December 8, following the worship service. Save the date! Blessings, Deborah Adult Religious Education program -- Sunday, November 17 from 11:25 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Room 51 Contemplating Compassion. During the last church year, the UUCR Adult Education Committee sponsored a study of Karen Armstrong s book, Twelve Steps to a More Compassionate Life. This year, we want to enhance and deepen our understanding of compassion as defined by Armstrong. At this first meeting, we'll discuss Unitarian Universalist teachings about compassion and, in subsequent sessions, we ll examine how other traditions have expressed the compassion ethos 1) Judaism and Christianity, 2) Islam, 3) Humanism, and 4) Buddhism and Taoism. This is an open group for anyone to join or drop in. Armstrong s book is not required but recommended reading as it is a basis for our study. Please join us! Contact Anne Byrd at with any questions. Adult Religious Education program -- Sunday, November 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary Talking With Children and Youth About LGBT Issues. Cynthia Bauerle and Stephanie Kreps will lead this important session from the Unitarian Universalist Association's Living the Welcoming Congregation curriculum. Please sign up at the Adult Education information table in Fellowship Hall after the worship service on Sunday, if you plan to attend. We need RSVPs for the light lunch we'll provide (bring your own tea or coffee) and we need advance registration for child care. (Lunch will be set up by 11:15 a.m. so that the program can begin promptly at 11:30.) To learn more, contact Cynthia at cbauerle12@gmail.com or Stephanie at skreps1772@aol.com. 7 Afternoon Anacostia Clean-up by Terrie Barr, Co-Chair, Green Sanctuary Team SOCIAL JUSTICE After the service on Sunday, November 17, join the Green Sanctuary Team, UUCR s eco-justice partner, Groundwork Anacostia, and our neighbors from Adat Shalom on the water. We will clean the Bandalong Litter Trap, the floating litter collection device in the Watts Branch tributary of the Anacostia River. Did you know that Montgomery County contributes to the more than 20,000 tons of trash that enter the Anacostia every year? We ll leave UUCR at 11:30 a.m. and start our clean-up at 12:30 p.m. We ll return to UUCR around 3:00 p.m. Bring a bag lunch and water; home-made cookies will be provided. Contact Terrie Barr at terriebarr@comcast.net or Julie Robinson at julia.robinson@marriott.com to learn more. Let the Divestment from the Fossil Fuel Industry Conversation Begin by Rachel Shaw, Green Sanctuary Team In response to the urgent issue of global warming, delegates to the 2013 Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) General Assembly voted to adopt an Action of Immediate Witness (AIW) entitled Consider Divestment from the Fossil Fuel Industry. The AIW calls for delegates to begin a denomination-wide conversation within their congregations about divesting from fossil fuels or exercising shareholder influence. The AIW statement includes six suggested topics that might be taken up for discussion within congregations. Unitarian Universalist members supporting divestment are drafting a Business Resolution to present at General Assembly 2014 to divest the UUA s Common Endowment Fund (UUCR invests in this fund) while allowing for minimal direct holdings for shareholder advocacy purposes and increased investments supporting a transition to clean energy. Organizers will soon begin collecting required signatures to meet the filing deadline. When the petition becomes available, the Green Sanctuary Team will host an information table and collect signatures following Sunday services. For text of the AIW, visit Additional information, including the pros and cons of divestment can be found at Endowment Sunday by Sharrill Dittmann, Chair, Planned Giving Committee It s fall, and all thoughts turn to winter. Squirrels are hiding acorns, deer are fattening up, trees drop their leaves, and we check our snow shovels and sidewalk salt. In other words, we re getting ready for possible difficult days. Many of us also begin to think about our families and communities and their needs. We think about the blessings of belonging to the UUCR community. We also think about our charitable giving, which is a way of helping our community through possible difficult days and to seed new initiatives. (continued on page 8) CONGREGATION WORKS Quest 7 November 13, 2013

8 Endowment Sunday (continued from page 7) CONGREGATION WORKS On Sunday, November 17, you are invited to give to the UUCR Endowment Fund to help assure that our congregation rests on a solid foundation. Endowment dollars are not used for day-to-day expenses but provide our rainy day fund and give us opportunities we might not otherwise have to consider new activities. Please consider a special gift this year by designating Endowment on the memo line of your check. Some members and friends give an amount equal to their age. Of course, multiples of your age are also good! Many members and friends have taken the extra step of including UUCR in their estate plans. This costs nothing and is easy to do. If you are considering leaving a bequest for UUCR and would like more information, please contact a member of the Planned Giving Committee: Len Cohen, Sharrill Dittmann or Roald Schrack. If you have already included UUCR in your plans, we say Thank You! We encourage you to let us know about your intentions, or give the office a copy of the Bequest Commitment Form found on the UUCR website at Your information will be held in confidence. A Warm Welcome to UUCR s New Members! by Nancy Gregory, Communications and Membership On Sunday, November 3, the congregation welcomed 12 new members to UUCR. They have a broad range of life experiences and perspectives, which you can read more about on the membership bulletin board outside the workroom in Building 1. You ll also find photos posted there. Kim Curtis was born and raised in Southern California, but recently moved to the DC Metro area, seeking new opportunities and a fresh start. After majoring in Women s Studies, mastering Business Administration with a focus on social responsibility, and dedicating countless hours to advocating for those without a voice, Kim has finally found a way to maximize her skills and passion by starting her own mission-driven business. Maria Del Solar, a widow since age 55, was born in Chile in At age 26, with her husband and daughter Jimena (Ryan), she immigrated to the United States, where she worked for the World Bank in DC for 25 years. After her husband's death, Maria traveled to India to study Buddhism. Maria lives in Olney where she spends her days reading, painting watercolors, writing, and teaching meditation. 10 SHARING THE MINISTRY Jim Blue and Sharrill Dittmann Photography Exhibition by Laura Huff, Chair, Aesthetics Committee Jim Blue and Sharrill Dittmann have several important things in common: both are long-time members of UUCR and have served on the Board of Trustees and many different committees; both trained as physicists and retired from careers at NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology); and they both showed an early interest in photography Jim since he was ten and Sharrill since she watched her step-father print black and white photographs in his basement darkroom. Sherry says she didn't begin to "decode darkroom magic" until she got to college, where she worked on the yearbook staff. Then her interest blossomed when she began to travel and wanted to take good pictures to recreate the beauty of the surroundings. Jim says that he was not satisfied with his control over his photographs until he switched from film to digital in Around 1980, he became interested in fractals, which require large amounts of number crunching, but he didn't have enough computing power to make it interesting at that time. Now Jim can achieve much more with his current powerful computer. (Ask him to explain fractals.) Sherry enjoys trying to capture the beauty of nature, which provides her with most of her subject matter. "Subjects large and small, abstracted or realistic call to me," she says. She feels that "photography is the perfect art form for anyone with a scientific bent. It harnesses technology and creativity in equal measure to allow the photographer and the observer to capture the essence of the world around them. Each of us sees differently, and photography allows us to share our vision." Jim and Sherry s exhibition runs through the end of December. Join them in Founders Hall for a reception on Sunday, November 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. To see more of Sherry's pictures, visit shapesbysherry.smugmug.com. 11 Thinking of You by Marialyce Sherr and the Pastoral Care Team THINKING OF YOU Happy birthday greetings to Ed Garbe who turns 100 years old on November 24. I m very optimistic about our future in this country, said Ed recently. A lot of people are negative right now, but I don t feel that way. In 1913 Ed was born in very good company; Rosa Parks was born that year. The next time Ed can reuse his old calendar from the year of his birth will be Both calendars will be exactly the same! There are so many ways to mark the passage of time. Ed has marked, and continues to mark, all of his time so well. After his graduation from Brooklyn Technical High School, Ed graduated as a civil engineer from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. He served his country in the United States Navy in World War II, and then traveled across the country over the years, visiting 47 states. At one time, Ed served on the Board of the South Nassau Unitarian Universalist Church in Freeport, New York, and he has been a member of UUCR since the mid-nineties. He is currently a volunteer at the Germantown library where he enjoys the opportunity to meet and assist people from all over the world. After over 50 years as a volunteer in various capacities, Ed continues to make a great difference. Elsa Tutwiler is recovering at the Wilson Health Care Center from a shoulder operation on October 17. This time, it is Elsa s left shoulder that was tampered with at Shady Grove Hospital. Elsa has always used her left hand as her paw of choice, so this recovery is a different sort of challenge than the recovery she managed four years ago when her right shoulder was in restoration mode. She would enjoy calls and cards from her friends at UUCR. Lucas Edenilson Guevara Bisnett was born on October 8 at 11:47 a..m. at home in Rockville with a midwife from Birthcare and Women's Health. He is the first grandchild of Catherine Higgins- Bisnett and the first great grandchild of Marion Higgins-Bort. He weighed in at 7 lbs., 8 oz. and 20 inches long. Lucas likes to spend his days eating, sleeping and, oh you know, something that involves a clean diaper. Alberta Maschal is hoping to get her arm out of a sling. Her left arm has been cooped up and uncomfortable since her fall at the Action Auction Lawn Party. Ralph Golden is still in rehab at the Wilson Health Care Center. Cheery cards may be sent to Ralph there. Contact Marialyce Sherr at msherr1@verizon.net with any news you d like to share in this column. Quest 11 November 13, 2013
