1 The Southwood Chalice Sharing Christ s Ministries & Missions A monthly publication October Hwy 58 South, Kinston, NC (252) ) Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Working theologian Mick Jagger once wrote: You can't always get what you want But if you try sometimes you just might find You get what you need I use the term working theologian slightly in jest, but I would argue that these are profound words. They reflect something I believe is a very important Biblical principle. Humans embrace narcissism. We respond by saying, Not I! But the truth is that we all want certain things. And the things we want can completely invade our senses. Siddhārtha Gautama was an individual who proposed the idea that a desire for material possessions caused suffering. He renounced all of his earthly possessions (which were many, for he was born into a wealthy family). Gautama spent the remainder of his life seeking ways to remove desire from his life. When he achieved this, he achieved a state referred to as nirvana. You probably better recognize Gautama by another name, the Buddha. Many Buddhist Monks live an ascetic lifestyle, giving up their possessions. By refocusing their lives, the hope is that they might find what they need! That is, to obtain nirvana like the Buddha! So, how in the world can Mick Jagger and the Buddha teach us anything about Christianity? Next time we think we really want something, we need to check ourselves. Especially when it comes to what we might think is best for the church, we need to think about the far-reaching implications. Jesus sacrificed everything for us! When was the last time we sacrificed anything for our fellow sister or brother in Christ? 3 Homecoming 2018 We just enjoyed one of the most inspiring homecomings ever. Our cup runneth over. We had to add extra tables to hold our wonderful brothers and sisters that came to celebrate with us. It is so encouraging to see families, children, babies and, of course, our mothers and fathers all eating a great meal together and sharing their love with each other. Homecoming is an annual event and is a time to see former members, old friends and new friends and to reflect on what our lives have been like in the past year! Christian fellowship is one of the most important things we can do. What a wonderful day we had. 1 Corinthians 11:33 33 So then, my brothers and sisters, when you gather to eat, you should all eat together. 3

4 50 th Harvest Festival The annual SMCC Harvest Festival is just a few weeks away! The trailer is in place for your convenience in dropping off your items that will be sold at either the Nearly New Shop or the Yard Sale. If you are interested in helping with the Yard Sale, please contact Wallace Johnson or Heather Kennedy. There are still some open slots on the food roster donations and some open slots on the help assignment roster located in the back vestibule. We need everyone s help to make this a successful Festival! October 21: Youth Groups are holding a "School Supply Drive" for teachers who were displaced from their classrooms during Hurricane Florence. We would like to collect all items by next Sunday, October 21. Please place the items in the blue box located on the hearth. Thank you for your help and support! If anyone would like to help financially with the prayer blanket ministry to make their check out to the church and put it is for this ministry. This ministry is growing, and all donations would be appreciated. October 15: The Constitution & Bylaws Committee will meet Monday at 6:30 pm in the Church Library. October 16: The next general CWF meeting will be held Tuesday, October 16 at 7:00 pm in the music room. All ladies of the church are invited to attend! October 21: On Sunday, at 3:00 pm in the Family Life Center, we will hold our first meeting to kick-off a new local chapter of Days for Girls, a third world ministry for young women. At this event, you will be presented with more detailed information about Days of Girls and how you can be a part of this satisfying, fulfilling, and meaningful outreach project. October 22: The Dorcas Circle will meet in the church parlor Monday at 7:00 pm. If you do not usually attend a circle, we would like for you to visit with us. October 23: Young at Heart will meet The American Red Cross would like to extend a gracious thank you for the blood drive results of 36 units of blood. 6 DAYS FOR GIRLS Southwood Memorial Christian Church is embarking upon a new outreach project by establishing a local chapter of Days for Girls. What is Days for Girls (DfG)? Days for Girls is a non-profit organization started in 2008 to innovate, create, and distribute a viable and sustainable solution for feminine hygiene to girls and women in 3rd world countries. Women, imagine, if you will, sitting on cardboard for several days each month, often going without food unless someone brings it to you. That is the stigma and opportunity killing reality many girls and women in 3rd world countries live with. Days for Girls' kits are designed to be a reusable feminine hygiene solution. On Sunday, October 21st at 3:00 PM in our Family Life Center at Southwood Church, we will hold our first meeting to kick-off this new local chapter of Days for Girls. At this event, you will be presented with more detailed information about Days of Girls and how you can be a part of this satisfying, fulfilling, and meaningful outreach project. We particularly need seamstresses or anyone who sews. BUT, you DO NOT have to sew to be a part of this project. There are other ways you can contribute as well. We cordially invite anyone interested to join us and find out how much of a difference DfG's kits assist women and girls be breaking the cycle of poverty and living their lives with dignity.
