The reading from Exodus narrates a sacrificial meal shared between Moses and the elders and the Lord. Their participation in the meal indicates that the Israelites agree to enter into a covenant relationship with the LORD. The blood sprinkled on the altar and the people signifies the ratification of the covenant binding the two parties together. For Christians, the celebration of the Eucharist is seen as the new covenant established by Jesus; we are united with God through our sharing in this meal. The covenant ceremony in Exodus prefigures the Christian Eucharist. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews says that Christ entered into the sanctuary and acquired our eternal redemption by the price of his blood. The earlier covenant made with Moses and the Israelites provided for ongoing sacrifices with the blood of goats and calves ; now, Christ is mediator of a new covenant, which leads to the promised eternal inheritance. His death is once for all ; his sacrifice makes him mediator of a new covenant that reconciles us to God. In Mark s Gospel today, Jesus institutes the Eucharist at the Last Supper. During the course of the meal, he takes, blesses, breaks, and gives the bread to his disciples, stating, This is my body. Similarly, with the cup, he says, This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed, anticipating his upcoming crucifixion. The phrase for many actually means for all ; it is a translation of an inclusive Semitic figure of speech. Our English translation, though literal, does not capture Jesus s intention. His blood is shed for all. His sacrifice has implications for the whole world. Taking place within the context of the feast of Passover, Jesus s Last Supper is understood as inaugurating a new covenant. For Reflection: How has my understanding of the Eucharist grown over the years? How does my reception of the Eucharist impact my life?

5 Parish Life Summerfest 2015 July 2-5 At the Cedar Lake Town Grounds Holy Name is looking for help at our Summerfest food booth. This is our third year and we continue to grow. Please consider a few hours, an afternoon or an evening to help out at the booth. Our Parish would like to recognize their accomplishment at our Graduation Mass, Sunday, June 14th at 9 AM. At this Mass, we will also be remembering the souls of the deceased in the class of Graduates are asked to report to the back of the church at 8:45 AM with or without your graduation regalia. Questions, please call Roberta Allan at CYX 2015 Catholic Youth Xperience This summer (July 17-19), high school teens from throughout Northwest Indiana will once again gather at Valparaiso for 3 Days of Faith & Fun. But this year, all CYX participants will board a bus and leave Valparaiso, following our baptismal call to serve our neighbors by traveling to multiple worksites at locations in Gary and North Lake County. More than just teens on a conference: they'll be Disciples on a Mission! For those familiar with previous CYX s that featured off-campus Saturday senior service projects, imagine that same concept, except everyone is on a service project, including group leaders, and Bishop Don, who will join the teens at worksites! The conference will still be held at Valparaiso University Pope Francis has inspired us to rediscover our Christian calling to serve those in need. The Indiana Bishops have recently released a statement calling us to respond proactively to poverty in our midst. Nowhere is poverty greater than in the City of Gary. We will do our small part to serve our neighbors, as well as learn about the issues surrounding poverty in Gary. Because CYX is all about embracing the City of Gary as our neighbor, we'll do more than work there, we'll play there too: we celebrate our workday with a Saturday evening picnic & beach party at Marquette Park! If you are a HS student interested in this great opportunity contact Mary Joan There are scholarships opportunities also Save the Date Sunday, July 26th For our second annual Chicken Dinner at Great Oaks (After Four Club) Details will follow later!!
