We worked for three days on a house owned by a single mother and her two children. They survived the tornado by crawling in the tub. The house had belonged to her Grandmother. She was not going to abandon it. We covered the outside of the house with OSB board and then wrapped it with Tyvek, removed windows and then installed new ones (including French doors). A few walls were moved and a new sub floor was put down in the bathroom and furnace room after removing tile and linoleum. There was no water or electric. Catholic Charities was in charge of the warehouse we used for supplies and the on-site coordinator. The Methodist church continually hosts mission groups by providing a kitchen and sleeping accommodations while receiving supplies and assistance from other churches in a true Ecumenical endeavor. We saw many laborers--- paid and volunteer. Progress is being made, but there is still MUCH to do.
3 Page 3 Generations of Faith Join us for our February Generations of Faith Event where we will explore the practices of Lent through the Operation Rice Bowl initiative. Every year we give these out at church, do you know what Operation Rice Bowl is? Do you know where the money goes? Are you acquainted with Catholic Relief Services? We will answer all these questions plus show you how to make the most of your home rice bowl and we will learn about five of the countries that Operation Rice Bowl supports. All are welcome. Plan to join us and start your 2012 Lent off on the right foot. We will give you the tools to make this the most meaningful Lenten journey yet.
4 Page 4 SEDER SUPPER at GOF!!!! In March Generations of Faith will be hosting a Seder Supper. The whole parish is invited to join us for this celebration which predates our Holy Thursday Mass. You are invited to come on Sunday, March 18th after the 9 AM Mass or Monday, March 19th at 6 PM. The meal will be at the end of the session so please plan accordingly. Because of the nature of the meal, if you are going to attend, you must RSVP for either Sunday or Monday whether you are registered for Generations of Faith or coming as a guest. Reservation cards will be made at the February Generations of Faith session and will be available in the back of church at the end of February. Reservations can also be made by maustgen9092@att.net, phone or on Facebook (Holy Name Cedar Lake). Grief Support Group Meetings The Community of the Holy Name of Jesus in collaboration with St. John the Evangelist will be offering monthly support group meetings. 5 Page 5 The Ministry of the Lector What is a Lector? A Lector proclaims the Word of God and is an intrinsic part of the celebration of Mass. What do Lectors do? During Mass, Lectors engage the assembly in a living experience of the Word of God. The proclamation of Scripture is a powerful and galvanizing force for the Christian presence and action in the world. Lectors have the challenge to bring the reading and telling of the Scriptures to life. There are two tables at Mass, the table of the word and the table of the Lord s body and blood. Together they constitute a single place of worship before God; it is from each of these tables that we are fed, that we receive the bread of life. In this light, it becomes apparent that the ministry of the Lector is pivotal to the whole liturgical celebration. At stake is the experience of the sacramental presence of the Lord both in the word and Communion and with one another. Therefore, Lectors must understand and believe that they are performing a real ministry of presence and communion. They must accept that the Lord is active and present to the assembly through their proclamation and that the Lord longs to speak and be heard in the biblical word they enunciate. To each and all, the Lord speaks a unique word, and the Lector is God s chosen instrument in that very moment of its communication through The word of the Lord! Excerpts taken from: The Ministry of the Lector by James M. Schellman, America Magazine, March 29, 2004 Who can be a Lector? Adults as well as teenagers are welcome to consider becoming a Lector. What are the responsibilities of a Lector? Prayerful and intelligent preparation of their assigned readings Attend their scheduled masses Attend periodic Lector training sessions and meetings Develop their talents through continued learning and formation Who is our Lector Chair? Our Lector chair is Lorrie Sheehy. She is responsible for the recruiting, training, and scheduling of Lectors. If you would like more information on becoming a Lector, please contact Lorrie at (219) or sheehytwo@att.net The staff liaison for this ministry is Cindy Foreman (219) jbh4545@aol.com

8 Page 8 Planning to Marry? The Diocese requires that couples planning to marry in the church begin their preparation at least six months in advance. Couples must contact Fr. Ed for more information and to get started. St. Vincent depaul News Thank you so much! Another month has gone by and our Parish has again made a tremendous outreach to the poor and the needy. Since we last reported, 5 families were helped. We provided $25 in gasoline assistance, $25 in food assistance, $50 in utility assistance, $50 in rent assistance, and $ to a military family whose loved one was wounded. During the month of February, we will accept non-perishable food items for our local food pantry. Numerous people go there regularly and without the food pantry, these people would go hungry. The shelves at the pantry are nearly empty. Please consider making a donation. We are waiting to help someone or a family who is out of work and needs assistance. Maybe they are experiencing a temporary setback. Please suggest to them to call and leave a message. Someone from our Society of St. Vincent de Paul will return their call. Altar Server Training There will be two training sessions offered to anyone interested in becoming an Altar Server. The training sessions will be held on February 4 th at 10 AM and 6 PM in the church. You need only attend one session. Junior high through college-age students are welcome to attend.
