Please see our Communion Statement in each worship bulletin. Lectionary Thoughts Today we have exerts from an article by Jim Hamkins of Ministry Matters: Why You Should Consider Becoming an Organ Donor Before you read more, I would like you to take out your driver s license. Look at it. Are you an organ and tissue donor? If you are, there will be some kind of indication on your license. In my home state, the sign for an organ donor is a small red heart on the front of the license; and indeed there is a heart just above and to the right of my signature. Other states have different indications. In Tennessee, donors check a box next to the statement, I hereby certify that I am 18 or older, of sound mind, and upon my death, wish to make an anatomical gift noted below. Tennessee residents can then choose to mark one of three options: (1) any organ/tissue, (2) entire body, or (3) specific organ(s)/tissue; and fill in their preferences. I ask such a personal question because November 9 is Organ and Tissue Donor Sunday in The United Methodist Church. The following weekend, November 14 16, many different faiths will participate in National Donor Sabbath, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. Answering the question: Sue Johnson, a member of Minnehaha United Methodist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is a registered organ and tissue donor. Sue works as a nurse and has seen many people benefit from organ donations. Although the recipient of the transplant and his or her family benefit, Sue says that often the donor s family benefits as well, particularly when their loved one died a sudden and/or tragic death. Karen McIntyre, a member of West End United Methodist Church in Nashville, Tennessee, is also a committed donor. When I asked Karen, What led you to your decision? she replied with a question of her own: Why not let my body be useful to someone even in death? The Reverend Christine Bowden, pastor of Long Neck United Methodist Church near Millsboro, Delaware, is a registered donor as well. She said she made it official in part because it was so easy to do when she renewed her driver s license. She added, While I m perfectly happy to share, I m not happy that the medical industry profits from these very personal gifts. (continued on page 4) 1

The deadline for the next issue is Wednesday November (continued from page 1) Like Sue, Karen, and Christine, I m a registered organ and tissue donor. I had no hesitation to answer yes when asked if I wanted to be a donor. The way I figured it, once I m dead, I m no longer going to need my organs and tissue anyway. Plus I see registering to be a donor as a way for me to respond to Jesus call to be compassionate. By this simple act, I may be an agent of healing. My decision may save the life of another person, or potentially more than one person. Donations do make a difference. At this time, medical professionals can transplant the pancreas, lungs, liver, kidneys, heart, and intestines, as well as perform kidney/pancreas, heart/lung, and other combined organ transplants. Organdonor.gov reports that tissue such as bone, cartilage, corneas, heart valves, ligaments, the middle ear, skin, tendons, and veins can be used to restore sight, cover burns, repair hearts, replace veins, and mend damaged connective tissue and cartilage. One organ donor can make a difference in the lives of many people. While most donors have died before the donation of their organs and tissue is completed, it s possible to become a donor while still alive. A living donor can donate a kidney, part of the pancreas, part of a lung, part of the liver, or part of the intestine, according to organdonor.gov. Your answer could matter. More than 123,000 people in the United States are waiting for an organ transplant. Another name is added to the waiting list every ten minutes. While last year there were 14,257 organ donations, approximately 21 people die each day because an organ donation was not made in time. Research has revealed that 98 percent of all adults have heard of organ donation, 86 percent have heard of tissue donation, and 90 percent say they support donation; yet only 30 percent know the steps to become a donor. While many of us are uncomfortable thinking about our own death, the reality is that each of us will die someday. Your answer today could help transform that future sad day for your loved ones into a hopeful day for someone else. ~from Pastor Jamie
5 Responding to God s Blessings This week is the second week of a monthlong journey focusing on stewardship as we worship, give thanks, and respond to God s blessings. In addition to hearing and learning more about stewardship as a way of life during worship, our Thanksgiving tree will be a visible reminder of the abundance of God s blessings and our thankfulness. As you enter or leave worship the first 3 weeks of November, we invite you to write down something you are thankful for on a leaf and attach it to the tree. (You are not limited to one leaf!) Then, we will celebrate our joyful response to God s blessings during our three worship services on the weekend of November In preparation for this special weekend, be sure to pick up your stewardship packet in the narthex after worship. Any packets not picked up by November 2 will be delivered to homes by volunteers. We hope you find this journey meaningful. If you have any questions, feel free to contact one of the members of the Stewardship Team: Wayne Weyhrauch, Duane Tackis, Debbie Kempf or Pastor Jamie. Attention Owls Let s go out for lunch on Thursday November 13. We will try Jimmie s Ladder 11 at 936 Brown St. in Dayton (near Miami Valley Hospital). We can meet at the church and carpool to the restaurant or meet at the restaurant. For reservations contact Mary Ann Sauer at or masauer@aol.com. Let her know if you are meeting at the church at 12:30 pm or at the restaurant at 1:00 pm. Come enjoy a good lunch and fellowship. A menu is on the counter in the narthex. Directory Update Please update your church directory for Roberta Moore s new address and phone: 590 Isaac Prugh Way, Apt. 141, Kettering, OH 45429, New Prayer Service Our morning prayer services started this past week at 9:00 on Tuesday and Thursday. We will be meeting in the lounge as the Sanctuary in not normally heated during the week. The services consist of a small amount of singing, several Bible readings, and prayer. If you are not comfortable praying in front of others, you are welcome to come and pray silently and let others do the public portions. The services which are about 45 minutes in length, are contemplative in nature and are generally led by Don Bennett. While we are praying for various things, we are focusing on our Prayer and Care requests. We have also divided the names of the members of our congregation into groups and are praying for a different group every service, with the goal of having had every member prayed for at least twice a year. If you have any questions, please contact Don Bennett or Pastor Jamie. Veterans Day Breakfast Good Shepherd is hosting a Veterans Day breakfast on Veterans Day Tuesday November 11 from 8:00 10:30 am. All veterans and their family are welcome to come and enjoy breakfast. Thrivent is sponsoring this event. Tell your veteran friends about our breakfast. If you are a veteran be sure to come. RSVP to Mary Ann Sauer at or masauer@aol.com. We will be serving breakfast casserole, fruit, muffins, coffee and juice. 6 New Enlistee Devin Cahill has enlisted in the military and leaves for Fort Bening, Georgia this week. Please pray for his continued safety. Need 3 Volunteers As some of you know some leadership have been going to some meetings with other churches in the East Dayton area to try and come up with some ideas for ways we can work together to save resources and reach out to our communities. Well we ve come up with some ideas and now we are looking for 2-3 people to be on a taskforce with the other churches to make some of these things come to life. If interested, or have questions, contact Wayne Weyhrauch or Pr Jamie for more information. Thanksgiving Outreach The Witness and Outreach Commission is inaugurating a new outreach for Thanksgiving Day, delivering Thanksgiving meals to people who have to work on that day. These folks will likely include area first responders, gas station attendants, and the like. We will make and package meals the day before Thanksgiving and then deliver them on Thanksgiving. If you are interested in helping contact Wendy Pierce or Don Bennett at and planning for the 2015 Spring Gathering. Information is posted on the narthex and connector bulletin boards. Call Marian Kettering at or Kate Steininger at to car pool. Please plan to attend to let your voice be heard. Show Your College Spirit - Join in the FUN: You Did!
