1 Volume XXVIII No. 9, May 2011 Grand Master s theme is preserve, perpetuate by M.W.B. Ed Bousquet, Grand Master Every Grand Master has a theme for his year. This year the theme is to Preserve and Perpetuate Our Heritage. At the Occasional Grand Lodge meetings the Grand Master made a short Power- Point presentation on how he defines our heritage, how we can preserve it and how our heritage can be perpetuated. Our Heritage, what is it? A system of beliefs based on the philosophy of self-improvement by following the moral teachings of our Fraternity. Not a bad elevator speech either! IN THIS Issue 1 Grand Master s Message 1 Trustees Quarterly Report 3 Grand Master s Calendar 5 MESH Board Report 7 Golf Tournament form 8 Contributions 10 Annual Communication Signup 11 News From Our Lodges How do we employ those beliefs? Through a system of principles, virtues and ethics that provide the Mason with symbolic tools to utilize in his journey of self-improvement. We can utilize a metaphorical tool box to store and organize these tools, all of which are available in the first degree of Masonry and are the very foundation of our Fraternity. They include the three principal tenets of Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth; the moral lessons of Faith, Hope and Charity; and the four Cardinal Virtues: Temperance, Fortitude, Prudence and Justice. Brotherly love, simply stated, is the Golden Rule. It is symbolized by the working tools of the three principal officers of the Lodge. The jewels for these officers are the square, level and plumb, which denote virtue, equality and morality. Relief is one of those common bonds that bind us together. We avidly espouse the support of public schools through our Educational Assistance program. This program started in 1857 with $250, and today has about $1.4 million endowed. Continued on page 2 Quarterly Report of the Board of Trustees by R.W.B. Richard A. Martin, Deputy Grand Master One of the duties of the Deputy Grand Master is to prepare a summary of the transactions of the Board of Trustees and prepare an annual report. That report is given at the Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge. In order to keep the Brethren informed during the year, quarterly reports are customarily given in the Oregon Masonic News. The Board of Trustees chairman is the Grand Master; other voting members are the Immediate Past Grand Master, Deputy Grand Master, Senior Grand Warden and Junior Grand Warden. They meet once a month and their powers and duties appear in Section 128 of the Code (there are 28 listed). Section places the Trustees as representatives on the Masonic and Eastern Star Home (MESH) Board. We have some very exciting news to report since our last update. At the MESH Board meeting in March, the Trustees, along with the sisters from Eastern Star, unanimously voted to admit a couple into the Continued on page 9

2 Grand Master s Message, continued from page 1 This school year the Grand Lodge will disperse over $70,000 to families around the Jurisdiction. Many Lodges and Appendant and Concordant Bodies have scholarship programs throughout the state. The Grand Lodge of Oregon s main philanthropy is the Masonic & Eastern Star Home in Forest Grove. We are partners with the Order of the Eastern Star to keep a promise that was made in There is a wide variety of medical causes, support for veterans and scholarship programs, to name a few. M.W.B. Bob Richmond, P.G.M., says, There is probably not a body part that some Order of Masonry does not treat. The Knights Templar support the Eye Foundation, Eastern Star support includes cancer research, Amaranth supports diabetes research, there is the Scottish Rite help for language and learning disorders and, of course, the Shrine Hospitals the most well known and visible of our philanthropies. Every Masonic organization supports a philanthropy. Truth is the foundation of every virtue. We teach the virtues of truth through the symbolism of bringing a Brother to light in each of the three degrees. He is blindfolded then brought to light so he may be taught that coming from darkness to light is the conquest of knowledge over ignorance. This is part of his Masonic journey and is taught through the use of symbols that cause the Truth to be concealed and every initiate must discover the meaning for himself. It is this journey from darkness to light that provides the Mason with a way to make himself better. Masonry seeks to inspire the individual to search for knowledge on his own. We believe in the moral lesson of Faith, not only in the Supreme Being but Faith in our Brothers and Sisters and Faith that we can make a difference in the world if we dedicate ourselves to the teachings of Masonry. We have Hope of immortality and Hope for a better life by adhering to the virtues of our Order. We champion Charity for all Mankind, but especially for those in need within our various organizations. We are admonished to sympathize and be compassionate to those in need. This is how we establish our friendships. We learn the most valuable commodity we have to give is our time, because it can only be given once. We are taught to avoid excess of the mind and body in order to adhere to the Cardinal Virtue of Temperance. I think the one tool that most aptly describes adherence to this Virtue is the compasses. It is interesting to note that the compasses, which teach us to circumscribe our desires and keep our passions within due bounds toward all mankind, is not defined as a working tool of Masonry and yet it is prominent in our symbols and lessons throughout all the degrees. Fortitude teaches us to be strong and resist, even physically if necessary, outside forces that want to weaken us morally and spiritually. Fortitude extols moderation. Prudence teaches us to be reasonable and careful in our actions and all things that affect our present and future happiness. This virtue helps define our conduct inside and outside the Lodge. Justice teaches us to be consistent in our dealings and render unto every man his just due without distinction and never deviate from the minutest principles of justice. These are the tools we have in our metaphorical toolbox and we receive the lessons of all these tools in the Entered Apprentice Degree. This is how we preserve our Heritage but how is our heritage perpetuated? The answer to that question is contained in developing several other desirable traits. These are listed here in no particular order of importance. Respect teaches us to hold others in esteem, be appreciative and regard with honor, be considerate and courteous in your speech and actions. Tolerance recognizes and respects the beliefs of others. Be tolerant and of charitable opinion to all Brothers and Sisters is a lesson we learn in more than one degree. Fidelity teaches us faithfulness to our obligations taken at the altar of Freemasonry. It teaches us to fulfill the duties to which we agreed to adhere so that none should regret relying on our word and resolve. Freedom: We are pledged to the true freedom of the people, includ- Continued on page 3 Page 2

We defend the right of every Brother to practice his religion or advocate his political persuasion. We contribute to the propagation of enlightened ideas. Masons believe in honor and that a man has a responsibility to behave honorably in all he does. Those who deal with us can rely on our word, profession and resolve. We have an acronym that helps us in our endeavor to preserve our heritage: PRIDE. Proclaim your love of the Fraternity, its members and leaders. Wear your hat and shirt to town to show pride in your Masonic heritage. Tell the world about Masonry. Responsibility: We support social responsibility for truth and justice and civil order for religious and intellectual liberty. Philosophically we oppose tyranny, dictatorship and destruction of human dignity and basic human rights. Inspire: By being a role model you inspire admiration and respect. You affect or guide the actions of others, motivate others to behave in a certain way. You take on the responsibility to others to act in a certain way. Dedicate yourself to Masonry and you will dedicate yourself to making the world a better place. By following a course of action or thought inspired by the lessons of Masonry you can make a difference in the lives of those around you, and a difference in your little corner of the world. Since Masons live all around the world, think of what we can do with a little dedication. Educate: Freemasonry teaches a system of Morality and Brother- Continued on page 4 Page 3

The last major area to discuss is Pass it on. We have several ways to accomplish this task. Praise: Publicly proclaim an expression of approval for a job well done. Encourage through positive enforcement commending the actions of another using the symbols of Freemasonry. M.W.B. Dennis Johnson, P.G.M., says we encourage by giving a Brother a task, get out of the way and let him do his best. If he has problems, pick him up, dust him off and put him back in the game. This type of praise is positive and educational for the Brother. Assist: We take an obligation to help, aid and assist. We must also assist by giving our time and by admonishing ourselves to never forget, be tolerant and of charitable opinion to others. Help those with a strong desire to learn so they may become better men and Masons. Strengthen: Through the study of the symbolism of Masonry we strengthen the bonds and ties of our Fraternity. Our obligations to one another create a bond that cannot be broken and by the strength of our teachings we can make the world a better place. Support: Masonic support comes from the mutual love and respect we have because of the moral lessons our different organizations teach. We may use different words but the message is the same. 5 Symbolism of the Ladder by Bro. Leon Zeldis S ince ancient times the ladder has appeared frequently in religious and esoteric contexts. It features prominently in the Tracing Board of the First Degree (Jacob s ladder), and is also an important symbol in the Second Degree (the spiral staircase) and in the Thirtieth Degree of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Knight Kadosh (the two-sided ladder). From remote antiquity, the ladder was taken as a paradigm of spiritual ascent. The ascending and descending angels on Jacob s ladder are representations of the soul s capacity to rise or fall along the Chain of Being. As Jean Farre explains: the ladder is a bridge between earth and heaven; it enables man to rise in the realm of knowledge and access the sacred. Further, the ladder expresses man s search in his aspiration for progress. In this case, the movement is ascending. However, the movement can also be descending. Man starts then looking for his deep roots, his unconscious, and even hidden knowledge. We could speak here of a descent to the underworld, in order to unveil all secrets, the mysteries that are in man. The ladder then reaches down to the bowels of the earth. Bro. Zeldis became a Freemason in Chile in 1959 and is also a Past Master of La Fraternidad Lodge in Tel Aviv. This excerpt was taken from a recent Short Talk Bulletin printed by the Masonic Service Association of North America. Masonic & Eastern Star Report for May 2011 by M.W.B. D. Arthur Bush, I.P.G.M. Where, oh, where did the time go? In just a few short days, I will step off the path of being a Trustee for the Grand Lodge of Oregon a path that started over 72 months ago and as they so poignantly put it, roll off the end of the table. MWB Art Bush, IPGM (front), and his evil twin, MWB Tomey R. Greer, HPGM, are shown at the East West Shrine Game in MWB Tomey looks so innocent, we are sure the nickname is an affectionate one. IPGM Bush calls this photograph his riding off into the sunset picture. It has been a phenomenal ride, a ride where the leadership of the MESH board has changed six times along with two changes in the position of executive director of Jennings McCall. As I look back over my tour of duty, I have seen some major changes. While the Board of Trustees has had to maintain the moratorium on admissions into the Masonic and Eastern Star Home, the Board worked long and hard to find a new way to help our Brothers and Sisters in need. We accomplished this through a new and innovative program called MasonicAid, which is the umbrella package for three programs. They are: Life Care, designed to ensure the care of those still living under the original program; OutReach Services, for helping people who remain in their own homes; and MESH- Care, which allows admission into the Home through a new application process that no longer requires the surrender of one s personal assets. I was pleased to be a part of the Board when we approved our first new applicants (who are now living at Jennings McCall) under the new MESH- Care application process. We are expecting more applications as the word about this new program spreads. During this last year, we have also turned the corner on costs, making operational improvements in several areas. A new accounting system called SAGE has been installed that provides us with a consistent view of our actual costs on a day to day basis and includes such things as cost per resident per day. We also completely transformed our computer environment to replace aging and unreliable systems. With the assistance of Ms. Adella Macdonald, the executive director of Jennings McCall, we spent several meetings revising the MESH Board Policy book to bring it in line with practices recommended by the state for nonprofit boards. After all, we are running a business. The occupancy level at Jennings McCall was probably the most important issue facing the MESH Continued on page 6 Page 5

6 a MESH Board report, continued from page 5 board this entire year. If the occupancy level is up, then so is our revenue. With this in mind, the MESH board approved accepting Medicaid Waiver residents at Jennings McCall. We have allocated just 10 percent of the rooms for occupancy under Medicaid, and those who apply must go through an evaluation process to make sure we can fulfill their needs. I m happy to report that all the rooms allocated for Medicaid residents have been filled and we now have a waiting list for vacancies if they occur in those specific rooms. This move has increased our occupancy level, which in turn has helped our bottom line. A second and equally important issue addressed by the Board was the special needs of our residents when it comes to medication. I m glad to report that at the January meeting of the MESH Board, we voted to enter into an agreement with PayLess Long Term Care Pharmacy to provide this special need and the change has been very well received by the residents. This new arrangement replaces the former in-house pharmacy and there have been no significant difficulties in filling prescriptions and providing timely deliveries. PayLess is very determined to meet our needs and provide the excellent service our residents require. As I leave the MESH board at the close of Grand Lodge in June, I ll be proud of what we have accomplished during the time I have served, and while there is still more to do, I take pleasure in knowing that our future as a business looks bright and that we will continue to fulfill the obligations we have all taken to assist our Brothers and Sisters in need. So Mote It Be, M.W.B. Art Bush, I.P.G.M. Chairman, MESH Board ASK THE GRAND MASTER - by M.W.B. Ed Bousquet Recently the Grand Master was asked to give an opinion about announcing the appointment of a coach for the newly initiated Entered Apprentice Mason. Announcing the appointment of a coach is done on a Lodge by Lodge basis. There is no set policy. As a matter of convenience and courtesy, announcing the coach at the meeting when the Candidate is initiated can be important. If the Worshipful Master has not appointed a coach he may ask for a volunteer at the conclusion of the initiation. This would allow the Secretary to record the coach s name in the minutes of the meeting. While there is no set policy, letting the Lodge know who will be the coach may be beneficial to the Lodge Brothers. Community members and local government officials were present for the dedication. The mayor talked about the long history of Masonry in the community and noted how pleased he was to see so many in attendance. The ceremony included the presentation of Corn, Wine and Oil. After refreshments, which included a fine cake, the Grand Lodge Officers returned to Lyon Lodge to close the Occasional Grand Lodge. Page 8

9 Quarterly Trustees Report, continued from page 1 Masonic and Eastern Star Home under the new MESHCare program. This represents the end to the moratorium on admissions that has been in place for the last seven years. The hard work and perseverance of all those involved since the moratorium has finally reached fruition. We continue a successful year financially. We are under budget and all the investments of the various Grand Lodge funds have shown improvement. Our hope is that next year the return on investments for the Life Membership Fund will be significantly larger than in Remember that the distributions are based on growth from the previous year (this year s distribution represented returns on investments from the fiscal year). We awarded the last of the Educational Assistance funds to three post-high school students at the February 2011 Trustees meeting. Once again all the funds available were not distributed, although we were pretty close. We returned $7, to the corpus of the Educational Assistance fund. The Trustees attended the Western Conference and the Conference of Grand Masters in North America. Additionally, the Grand Secretary attended the Western Conference and the Conference of Grand Secretaries of North America. All the conferences were held in Denver, Co. At the Western Conference, chaired by M.W.B. D. Arthur Bush, I.P.G.M., we were pleased to receive papers from each of the six jurisdictions represented. If there was a theme, it would have been related to social networking and communications. All the presentations were excellent. Kudos to R.W.B. Hunt Compton and R.W.B. Dave Fryday on their presentation of the Grand Master s Achievement Award The Key to a Successful Lodge. Likewise, the break-out sessions at the Conference of Grand Masters were all excellent; some of the best Masonic minds and authors were there imparting their wisdom to us. Without a national governing authority, this venue offers, perhaps, the best opportunity to gain the experience and knowledge necessary to be a Grand Master. Also, it offers the Grand Secretary, at the Conference of Grand Secretaries, immeasurable information that he would not get elsewhere. Another duty of the Trustees is to evaluate the performance of Executive Director Adella Macdonald. We delivered her yearly evaluation prior to the March MESH and Trustee meetings. Her performance was found to be well above expectations. Among her many accomplishments this past year has been bringing Medicaid residents into the Home, implementing the MasonicAid umbrella that includes Life Care, MESHCare and expanding OutReach, reducing expenses, upgrading our accounting software, upgrading our server environment, updating and revising the MESH Board Policy manual, obtaining a better vendor for pharmaceutical products, participating successfully in fund raising for the MSAP Golf Tournament, and doing all of this while very close to budget. The Trustees wish to publicly thank Adella for all her hard work this past year. She is an integral and valuable member of the Grand Lodge team (and a pretty good golfer). I ve covered most of the highlights. If you have any questions or concerns about the Trustees please direct them to me. I would be happy to discuss them with you! R.W.B. Rich Martin, D.G.M. 11 NEWS FROM OUR LODGES A ROUNDUP OF NEWS & EVENTS from Oregon Lodges Stanley E. Hermann was recognized for being a Master Mason for 60 years. R.W.B. Bob Mallory, District Deputy for District 15, and W.M. Jim Aday, Master of Laurel Lodge No. 13, made the presentation at the Lodge in Roseburg. As a young man, Bro.
