2 2 A message from Pastor Rick PASTOR AND CHURCH COUNCIL Our congregation is about to start the celebration of our first 60 years of ministry. Some of you have been around for a significant portion of this time, while others are relative newcomers to our fellowship in Christ. Being a history buff, I like to occasionally look up church web sites and read what is posted about a congregation's history. What I have found is that that most churches seem to write about two things more than anything else: 1)the church's location and/or building history and 2)a list of the pastors who have served there. We are somewhat guilty of doing this on our own page. When looking at the history of St. Paul, there is a lot to celebrate. We have been in a couple of different locations, but those are our bricks not our heart. A number of pastors have served this parish, but they are our shepherds not the entire flock. Our history is about how God has led and continues to lead the people of this congregation to love and serve this community. Whether you have been here for 60 years or 6 months, How have you seen God active in the ministry of this congregation? Who has helped you see God's love through their words and actions? How have we been an active loving presence to those outside the walls of our building? The answers to these questions will not only show us who we have been, but they will also help us see who God wants us to be. Peace, Pastor Rick Sunday, February 2 9:30am If you are new to the congregation and are interested in joining or learning more about St. Paul. Contact Pastor Rick, (423) or pastorrick06@att.net Planning Team update The team planning the 60th anniversary celebration wants to interview some of our members. Is there someone who has experience/training in interviewing who would like to assist in this project? Please contact Gene Frye if you can help. 3 3 A Message From the Council President Dear Friends of St. Paul I want to thank everyone who joined us for the Congregational meeting on January 19, I believe we accomplished quite a lot during the meeting and I look forward to the future for St. Paul Lutheran Church. As your Council President I want to promote open communication with your Council, we are here to serve you and Jesus Christ. I also want to continue to ask for your help in volunteering. We can always use your knowledge and input on the many projects St. Paul is involved in. Please consider volunteering by contacting any member of Council or our Ministry Teams, we would love to have you. In closing, Council wants to wish a very Happy 90th Birthday to Clayton Narveson. May he have many more to celebrate. Yours in Christ, Rick Anger PASTOR AND CHURCH COUNCIL Other Council News Nominating Committee Bob Block, Anne Sims, and Courtney Snoderly were elected to the Nominating Committee for Passion Vote The congregation elected the Kitchen Remodel as it s Passion stay tuned for more information as plans are formulated. Displays in Welcome Center: The Building Use Request Form will be modified to allow addition of a request to set up a display in the Welcome Center. Gone are our attendance pads, and in their place are yellow cards like the one you see here. We are asking each FAMILY to fill one of these out on Sunday and place the card in the offering plate. There are a couple of different items on the card compared to the old sheets. One is a reservation for our Wednesday dinners. This is not a formal reservation, just a way to help us guess at numbers. Also, the back of the card can be used to write down prayer concerns or other notes you need the pastor and/or office to know. We hope this method will help us share more and better information with each other. 4 4 Thank you Herb! Herb Perry has been the church Financial Secretary for the past five years. He has been responsible for recording all offerings and financial gifts to the church. Setting up a system of tellers who record weekly offerings, maintaining individual giving records of everyone who financially supports St. Paul. This is a lot of people, a lot of transactions, and a lot of different funds to keep tract of. Herb has spent countless hours and has done a terrific job. Herb has spent the past few months working with Robert Bryant who became our new Financial Secretary beginning January 1st. Herb will continue to be part of the teller team and finance team of the church. Thank you Herb for your service to this ministry. Also thanks to Carol for all the late Sunday dinners. Supporting Ministry Team New Financial Secretary Beginning January 1, 2014, I replaced Herb Perry as the St. Paul Financial Secretary. As we all know, Herb has provided us with accurate and wise counsel and tireless service for several years. I m humbled by the fact I have such big shoes to fill. But with God s Grace, your patience and Herb s continued coaching, I think I can rise to the occasion. I welcome your comments, input, and questions at any time. You may contact me by any of the following methods. rdbryantpe@bellsouth.net Phone: (home), (mobile) Address: 3663 Wayne Bryant Road, Louisville, TN Robert Bryant Tom Sims - Coordinator Tax tip: The IRS requires you to have an acknowledgement from an organization when you make a noncash gift. If you have given items to St. Paul, there is a form you can fill out on the Supporting Ministry Team bulletin board. Attach the receipts and put it in Robert Bryant s folder. The financial secretary will sign it and return it to your folder.
