Jesus is the great divide in human history. He invites our undivided attention and devotion. Today, in the assembly, we are surrounded by "so great a cloud of witnesses." DiscoveRING BELLS - This is a six-week course designed to teach people of all ages how to ring handbells. Look for all the details on the flyer that is in the newsletter, on our website under Worship and Music Committee, and hanging on the bulletin board in the narthex. CONFIRMATION ORIENTATION MEETING - An orientation meeting with students and parents of students entering in the first and second levels will be held THIS MORNING, Sunday, August 18 th at 10:45am. Requirements and schedules will be reviewed for the upcoming school year. CUPCAKES NEEDED chocolate or vanilla cupcakes with yellow icing are needed for Sunday, September 8 th. 3 FAMILY FAITH CHALLENGE The theme of the family faith challenges for August 2013 is the Third Article of the Apostles Creed, On Being Made Holy. We challenge you to think about God, the Holy Spirit, and how God s Spirit works through us and through the church community. (God s Work, Our Hands.) August 18-24: Read the Third Article of the Apostles Creed, On Being Made Holy, and the explanation in Luther s Small Catechism. Have you been to another church besides your own? What was it like? Wherever you may be going this week, visit a church. HOPE CHURCH S YARD SALE - The yard sale at Hope Church will be held on Friday, August 30 th and Saturday, August 31 st. Items can be brought to church this week, Monday through Friday from 8:00am 8:00pm. Please see the flyer on the bulletin board and on the glass doors for a list of items that are NOT being accepted. You can also help by donating baked goods, newspapers and plastic bags. Also, watch for a sign-up sheet to volunteer to help during the yard sale. Any questions, please call Ralph Fisher at BLESSING OF THE BACKPACKS - Each year when Sunday School ramps up for the fall we take time in worship to bless the teachers as they begin a new year of teaching. This year, as summer draws to a close and the new school year begins for our youth we d like to take the time to bless their endeavors as well. So NEXT Sunday, August 25 we invite all children to bring the backpacks they will be using for school in the academic year to church and have them blessed during worship! We ll be offering this opportunity at both the 8:00 AM and the 9:30 AM services. Parents and other adults are invited to bring along their laptop bags, briefcases or folders and have them blessed as well! We will also include bus drivers, cafeteria workers, principals, teachers and all who work in the school systems in our prayers so we hope you will all join us for worship! Let s all start off a new school year with God s blessings. PRAYERS FOR THE WEEK The Congregational Council is encouraging all our members to grow in their spirituality through a regular Prayer Life. One way of doing this is by lifting up in prayer one family from our church each day of the year. 4 WELCA news is available on the bulletin board in the narthex. STATISTICS Last Sunday s attendance; 8:00am service 111; 10:30am service 108. Total offering - $ (includes $ for the building fund). CLOTHING NEEDED a local family is in need of some children s clothing for their children to start off the school year. Girls sizes needed are 6X and 7/8, boys size needed is 11/12. If you can help by donating gently used or new clothing please call the church office at PRAYER SHAWL GROUP will be resuming on Thursday, September 12 th at 10:00am. They will continue meeting the second Thursday each month in the 2 nd grade classroom (the room behind the library). All are welcome! NEW MEMBERS CLASSES -If you know of someone who is interested in becoming a member of Hope Church, please invite him or her to our new members classes, which will begin in September. Classes will be held from 9:15-10:15am on the following Sundays; September 22, 29 and October 6. New members will be received on Sunday, October 6. SUNDAY SCHOOL - Our Sunday School begins on Sunday, September 8 th. Our teachers are ready to have a good year with their students. Please note that Sunday School begins at 9:15am and ends at 10:15am. Please make giving a weekly offering each week a priority with your children. We have classes for age two through adult. WORSHIP HOURS will resume back to 8:00am and 10:30am on Sunday, September 8 th. PENNY PARTY will be held at Hope Church on Sunday, September 22 nd. Doors open at 1:00pm and the party begins at 2:00pm. Bake Sale and Food will be available for purchase. The proceeds benefit the Northampton Area Food Bank.
