1 Mark 16 PREVIEW: In Mark 16, Jesus resurrects from the dead and appears to numerous people, commissions His disciples and ascends into Heaven. The Resurrection of Jesus- Read Mark 16: After the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, who went to see the tomb of Jesus? Who specifically were these people (v. 1)? (See also Matthew 27:56, 28:1, Mark 15:40, 16:1,9, and Luke 24:10.) 2. What day of the week is the first day of the week? (See also Acts 20:7.) What time of the day did these people come to the tomb (v. 2)? (See also John 20:1.) 3. What were those approaching the tomb concerned about (vv. 2-3)? Why do you think this was a concern for them? (See Mark 15:47 and Matthew 27:62-66) 4. What did those approaching the tomb discover (v. 4)? How did this happen? (See Matthew 28:2.) Mark 16 Page 1

2 5. Who did those approaching the tomb encounter? What was their emotional response (v. 5)? (See also Matthew 28:2-6, Luke 24:2-5, and John 20:11-12.) 6. What did the angel tell them about Him? What did the angel tell them to come and see (v. 6)? 8. What did the angel tell the women to go and do (v. 7)? 9. The angels sent the women on a mission to tell Jesus disciples about what they had seen that caused them to tremble and be amazed. Apparently other people noticed them on their journey to tell the disciples, what did they say to them (v. 8)? 10. 3 The Appearances of Jesus - Read Mark 16: After His resurrection, to which woman did Jesus appear first (v. 9)? Where did He appear to her? (See John 20:11-18.) 12. What did this woman do after Jesus appeared to her (v. 10)? 13. What was the disciples response to this person s testimony of Jesus appearance (v. 11)? (See also Luke 24:11.) 14. After Jesus appeared to this woman, to whom else did He appear? Where (v. 12)? What did Jesus share with these others? (See Luke 24:13 35.) 15. What was the disciples response to these others that Jesus appeared to (v. 13)? 16. 4 17. Jesus appeared again after His resurrection, this time to the disciples as they sat at the table. What was His response to them? Why (v. 14)? 18. The disciples had heard several times that Jesus was resurrected and had appeared to certain people, yet they did not believe. Thomas (Didymus), called the Twin, was not present when Jesus appeared as they sat at the table. Although all the disciples saw Jesus, what was Thomas response to their testimony? (See John 20:24-25.) 19. It has been 1,981 years since Jesus resurrected and not one of us has seen Him with our eyes as the disciples did. What did Jesus tell Thomas about those who would believe although they have not seen Him? (See John 20:29) 20. After appearing to the disciples, to whom else did Jesus appear? (See 1 Corinthians 15:3-8 and Acts 1:3-4, 9:3-6.) 21. Jesus commissioned His disciples to continue His ministry. The first part of the Great Commission He gave is to Go. 5 22. In addition to going, the disciples were to preach. What were they to preach? To whom were they to preach (v. 15)? (See also Luke 24:47, Acts 2:38-39, Colossians 1:23, and Romans 10:14-18.) 23. Matthew recorded more of the Great Commission than Mark. Another part of the commission is to make disciples (see Matthew 28:19). What is a disciple? 24. The disciples were instructed to make disciples (Matthew 28:19). How is a disciple made? (See Matthew 28:20.) 25. What were the disciples commissioned to teach the new disciples (Matthew 28:20)? Why is teaching new disciples this so important? (See John 14:15, 21, 23-24, 15:14, and 1 John 2:3-5, 5:3.) 26. Another part of the Great Commission is to baptize (v. 16). How are disciples to baptize? (See also Matthew 28:19, John 1:12, Ephesians 1:5, Romans 8:14-17, 2 Corinthians 6:18, Galatians 4:5-6, Hebrews 12:5-8, 1 John 3:1, and Revelation 21:7.) Mark 16 Page 5

6 27. The final part of the Great Commission is a promise from Jesus (see Matthew 28:20). What is that promise? How does He fulfill that promise? (See Hebrews 13:5, 1 John 3:24, 4:13, Ephesian 1:13-14, 2 Corinthians 1:21-22, 5:5, 13:5, and Romans 8:9, 8:16.) 28. In Mark s rendering of the Great Commission, Jesus said that those who do not believe the gospel will be condemned (v. 16). What does condemned mean? Why are they condemned for not believing? (See John 3:16-18 and Romans 8:1.) 29. Jesus said that numerous signs would follow those who believe in Him. He did not say that those who believe in Him would follow the signs. What signs did He list (v )? The Ascension of Jesus - Read Mark 16: After Jesus commissioned His disciples to carry on His ministry of preaching, teaching, and healing where did He go? What did He do (v. 19)? (See also Psalm 110:1, Luke 22:69, Acts 7:55, 1 Peter 3:22.) What is He doing at this hour? (See Hebrews 7:25.) 31. What did the disciples do after Jesus ascended (v. 20)? 32.
