1 I will praise the Lord according to His righteousness, and will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High. Psalm 7:17 PREVIOUS Message Summary: In Exodus 13-14, a portrait of deliverance is painted: As God s people were set free from bondage in Egypt, so we are redeemed in Jesus Christ. We looked closely to gain a greater understanding of our freedom from sin and our new life in Him. For a detailed outline and the free media files from Exodus 13-14, please visit the expound archives: PRAY Father, show me the power of Your right hand and let me praise you as Moses and Miriam did. In Jesus name, amen. Journal your prayer here. PREVIEW In Exodus 15, we ll see Moses and Miriam sing a song of praise to God for His great power and deliverance. In Exodus 16 we ll see how God provided sustenance for His children and we ll discover what the Manna truly represents. 1
2 PREPARE The Song of Moses Read Exodus 15:1-19 Exodus 15 contains the first recorded song in the Bible. Read through Moses song. What is the theme of his song? What words did Moses use to describe the God who was personal to him (v. 2)? How does Moses characterize God in verse 3? See also Exodus 14:14, Nehemiah 4:20, Psalm 35:1, and Revelation 19:11. God s right hand often refers to the omnipotence of God. Name a few things God has done by His right hand. (See Psalm 17:7 and Psalm 118:15-16.) Anthropomorphism is a word or phrase that helps finite man comprehend an infinite God. Find the anthropomorphism in verse 8 and in the following verses: Exodus 7:5, Numbers 6:25, Psalm 33:6, Psalm 34:15, and Psalm 57:1. Moses used words of faith for facing their future enemies (vv ). Why would these future enemies be struck with fear and dread (v. 16)? 2
3 Moses spoke prophetically about the tabernacle at Shiloh and eventually the Temple (v. 17). Who did he say will dwell there? The Song of Miriam Read Exodus 15:20-21 Who was Miriam? What was her role in Israel s wilderness wanderings? (See Micah 6:4.) What is the theme of her song and dance? PRODUCE Moses wrote the first song in the Bible, a song of praise to God. Write some words of praise that express your gratitude to God. PROCEED God told His children how they could avoid the diseases of the Egyptians. What did they need to do? Does this apply to us today? 3
4 Bitter Waters Made Sweet Read Exodus 15:22-27 God brought his children to Marah, a place of bitter water. What made the water sweet (v. 25)? The sweetening of the water was not dependent upon the nature or quality of the tree, but on what? (See also John 9:6.) Bitterness refers to bondage (see Exodus 1:14). Sweetness often refers to sacrifice or an offering (see Leviticus 1:9;13, Numbers 29:36 and Ephesians 5:2). It was a tree that turned the bitter water sweet. Upon what tree was a sacrifice made for deliverance from bondage? (See Galatians 3:13 and Colossians 1:19-20.) God told His children how they could avoid the diseases of the Egyptians (v. 26). What did they need to do? PRACTICE The children of Israel were to gather Manna every day. How is this an exercise that we need to put into practice in our lives today? PROCLAIM What did you discover about the real meaning of the Manna? Share it with a friend; share it with the group. 4
5 Bread from Heaven Read Exodus 16 The children of Israel began their wilderness journey by complaining. Against whom were they complaining (v. 2)? Who were they really complaining against (v. 7)? What do these verses tell you about complaining: 1 Corinthians 10:6-11 and Philippians 2:4. What were they complaining about (v.3)? Write out their complaint. What did Moses say God would do about their complaints (v.8)? PROTECT Meditate upon the concept of daily bread and the identity of the Bread of Life. Have you partaken of the Bread of Life? PROMOTE Write a post on your Facebook wall about the Manna and the identity of the Bread of Life. 5
6 Besides providing food, what else did God say He was going to do about their complaints (v. 4)? How did God provide food for them? What kind of food was it and what time of day was it provided (vv )? Describe the Manna (vv. 14, 31). What does the word Manna mean (vv. 15, 31)? PROCESS Review your ; the Song of Moses, the sweet water and the Manna from God. What have you learned? 6
7 How much Manna were they to collect (vv. 17, 18, 22, 36)? When did the Manna not appear and why (vv. 23, 27, 29-30)? How long did they eat Manna (v. 35)? What does it mean to partake of the Bread of Life? (See John 6:35.) PRAY Father, show me more from Exodus as Pastor Skip teaches about the song of Moses and the Manna. In Jesus name, amen.
