Immerse us in your grace, and transform us by your Spirit, that we may follow after your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. FIRST LESSON: Genesis 1:1-5 Out of chaos, God brings order. Out of the primeval darkness, God brings light. This familiar story was good news for the Israelites, who experienced much chaos in their history. It remains good news for any person living in the chaos and darkness of despair. God created and continues to create new life. In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, 2 the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the 2 7

GOSPEL: Acts 19:1-7 In Ephesus, Paul encounters people who had received John s baptism of repentance but had never heard of the Holy Spirit or of baptism in the name of Jesus. After Paul baptized them, the Holy Spirit came upon them and empowered them with gifts of the 6 3

While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior regions and came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples. 2 He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?" They replied, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." 3 Then he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" They answered, "Into John's baptism." 4 Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus." 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied 7 altogether there were about twelve of them. PREACHING TEXT: Mark 1:4-11 Mark s gospel reports the story of Jesus baptism with some irony: the one on whom the Spirit descends is himself the one who will baptize others with the Holy Spirit. 4 John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6 Now John was clothed with camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 He proclaimed, "The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8 I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." 9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11 And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased." On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. If you are interested in becoming a member please stop and talk with Pastor Evavold, Shivon Miller, or call the church at WORSHIP Tear Open for a Surprise Back on the first Sunday of Advent, the first reading began with an urgent cry to God: "O that you would tear open the heavens and come down" (Isa. 64:1). The world is a wreck. Do something something fiery and drastic, to make mountains quake and nations tremble as in ages past, when "you did awesome deeds that we did not expect" (64:3). In today's gospel the heavens are indeed torn open, and God's Spirit descends like... a hawk? An eagle? What we do not expect is that the heaven-tearing Spirit floats down upon Jesus like a gentle dove. Mark's gospel unfolds rapidly, from John's voice crying in the wilderness to God's voice over the baptismal waters of the new creation. Mark tears through his story with urgency and speed. But this tearing does not portend violence toward us. Birth pangs consume a mother; what they deliver is a baby. When God rips the barrier between the holy and humankind, it is divine gentleness that strikes us with awe. Today heaven's curtain is torn open, and God's voice is heard. Passion Sunday will bring another voice, another tearing, as "my Son, the Beloved" screams out, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Mark 15:34; Ps. 22:1). When Jesus gives a loud cry and breathes his last, the curtain of the temple decorated with heaven's sun and moon and stars is ripped in two. No more barriers. Nothing can separate us from the love of God, who joins us in the very experiences we do not expect. Sharing our baptism, Jesus goes under the chill waters of our powerlessness, forsakenness, and death. Our share is resurrection and new life. We may not recognize it at first. We may go silent. 6 WITNESS New OASIS Wednesday Night Schedule John Morris 5:00pm: Mentor Meeting Youth and Young Adults responsible for leadership of the evening program gather with Shivon to prepare and pray for the evening. Adult Forum Starting on January 15, Sunday Mornings at 10:00 in the lounge. A Great-Grandma to a King, a King-maker, a King and a Royal Pain: Ruth, Samuel, David, Elijah Course Kit Explore scenes from the lives of Ruth, Samuel, David and Elijah in this People of Faith Bible study. These scenes are in chronological order to give participants a sense of each person's story from beginning to end. Each session opens with a gathering prayer and focus activity. From there, participants open Scripture and explore scenes from the lives of these four people of faith. Using the text, participants then join the conversation in which they read and chat about that person's story. Each session ends with prayer and opportunities for extending the conversation. Augsburg Christian Education Workshop Saturday, January 21, 9-Noon Open to anyone interested in passing on the faith to all generations. $10 Lunch provided Join Shivon for a morning of learning about passing on the faith to all generations in our current culture. There will be workshops and large group sessions led by Augsburg staff and ministry volunteers from across the NE MN Synod. Please call the main office with questions or registration information. 5:30pm:Open Gym Youth are invited to join Matt Kalm (an Oasis alumni) in the gym for games ranging from Basketball to Blob Tag. Check the weekly schedule for activity listing. Homework Help Youth are encouraged to bring their homework to the Chapel. They can get their work done for the night as well as get help from Oasis mentors. Adventures in Cooking Youth can join Paul Runnoe (Oasis alumni) in the kitchen for a different adventure each night. Youth will learn how to cook and serve one another as they prepare the meal for the Oasis community. 6:30pm: Dinner and Check in as a Community Youth will be invited to join small groups around the dinner table. This will be a time for sharing a meal and our highs and lows. Each meal will end with prayers for each other. 7:00pm: Worship and Music Martin Schmidt will lead the group in a short worship and music devotional time. 7:15pm: Bible Study Groups: Youth will be divided into age groups for small group Bible Study. Bible Study topics will focus on Walking with Jesus in Real Life. Senior High youth and Young Adult mentors will help lead these groups. 8:00pm: Oasis Ends

Congregational Easter Greetings Again this year, we would like to mail out personal Easter greeting cards to every member of our congregation. You can help. Beginning March 14 we encourage you to pick up a stack of Easter cards and pre-addressed, pre-stamped, envelopes from the narthex. Write an Easter greeting on your card, sign your name, and mail it off to the person on the envelope. In this season of new hope and new life, let us send each other blessings and lift each other up. Easter Breakfast April 4, 9:45-10:45am ***please note time and menu change from prior years Due to the change in service times this Easter and the lower attendance at the Easter Breakfast the past few years, we will be providing a light, buffet breakfast this year. Congregation members are invited to come downstairs between services from 9:45-10:45am and help themselves to juice, muffins, fruit, and little quiches. All free will donations will go towards covering the cost of the meal and Oasis youth ministry at the church. 10 Pennies! The Women of the LS Conference are again collecting pennies through March 22nd. Last year the LS conference collected $1, in pennies which was divided between Homeless Youth and LSS. The NE Synod collected a total of $8, The penny jar is in the Narthex. Thank you for all you do! GOOD NEWS!!! A very generous member of the Congregation, who would like to remain anonymous, has set up a challenge to the rest of the Congregation. They are willing to match ANY gift for the West Tower Window project up to a total of $1000!! Whether you can give a dollar or a dime, or even $1000!! If this challenge is fully matched, we will be well on our way to being fully funded as we move towards replacing the old inefficient windows. As winter moves along, we will be money ahead if we can replace these windows as soon as possible. If you would like to give towards this challenge, please put cash or check into an envelope with your name, the name of the project (West Tower Windows) and your envelope number so that the gift can be added to your giving statement. 14 From Property Management A month or so ago, we had a contribution match offer for the west tower windows. Well, I can tell you that the match has been fully met, and then some. I will be talking with Kathy Larsen our treasurer in the next few days to determine exactly how much we have left to raise but the best estimate I can give is that we have between $1500 and $2000 left to raise. Thanks to all of you who have given! This month we have been doing a bit of work in the apartment. There was some plaster work that needed to be completed, so that is ongoing. Also the Women of Trinity have used some of the money they have raised during rummage sales, dinners, and other things to purchase a new (used) stove, and fridge for the apartment. The appliances should be good for quite some time now. Also in late February, and early March, the Church s system did not work. I was asked to help out, and after discussing the matter with the provider, we were finally able to get it working again. Now the Trinity web site is having some issues we have been working on that as well, but with this we have not been so successful. If anyone in the Congregation knows how to make a website work, please let either me, or Shivon know there are some needed changes for the site that need to be downloaded. More on this to come. Just today (well, by the time this gets published it is last week, or the week before) a couple of us from the Property Board mounted another cup holder in the kitchen. Last week, Tony Stauber was asked to make a new cup hanging board. He finished it, and made the plan for hanging it. He did a great job; please give Tony your thanks. While I am thinking about it Tony also purchased a new American flag as the old one had gotten quite ragged. He told me that he wanted to buy it in memory of his wife Margie. Thanks Tony! Thanks also to all of you who have given! There are a few projects ongoing that will need your thoughts, prayers, and gifts if we want them to get done.
