Sunday Church School 9:45 drop-off ~ Church school for children ages 3-5th grade starts at 10am in the lower level From Our Rector The Rev. Jesse Perkins jperkins@stmichaelsbarrington.org On Saturday, St. Michael's will host Bishops Jeff Lee and Joseph Atem to celebrate a twenty-year partnership between the Diocese of Chicago and the Diocese of Renk. We will begin the celebration at 10:00 a.m. in the community room, and it will include a presentation from Bishop Joseph and his work in South Sudan. We will conclude by honoring our partners in this ministry, and sharing lunch together. As many of you know, St. Michael's has a longstanding relationship with the University in Renk as it trains priests to go out into the world to be ministers of the Gospel and of reconciliation. I hope you can join us on Saturday to celebrate and learn more about this great work in which we engage, and the partners we have in it. To RSVP your attendance, contact Jackie Kraus at (847) or jackie.kraus41@gmail.com. Following this event, Bishop Joseph will be joining us on Sunday morning as our guest preacher at both services. The vestry, following the tradition of hosting a guest bishop, has designed all open offering that day to go to the Renk Partnership Team in support of this ministry. I hope to see you there! Jesse+ More From The Rector on ALLHALLOWTIDE... Next week, St. Michael's will be holding three significant events that all center around All Saint's Day - these three events are referred to as AllHallowTide. It starts with Halloween, or All Hallow's Eve, on the night before All Saint's Day (10/31). Traditionally, it was a vigil where the faithful would stay up all night praying and waiting for the next day. It also has many other expressions and is found in many cultures; for Christians in America, it is a

High gather at the Sturtz House & join the service at 10am. 9:00am ~ Adult Formation meet in the Conference Room to (watch calendar for seasonal class dates) Nursery (infants and children up to 3 years old) is available downstairs from 9:30am through the 10am service. For additional service information, events and activities, please visit our website by clicking here. mixture of fun and scary. We encounter death and mortality through costumes and fun fright (and sometimes we just dress up for fun). We mock death by dressing up as vampires, living dead, axe murders, or zombies - as though death holds no power over us. However, the truth is that "to dust we shall return," and as we move through Allhallowtide, our next liturgy is one of remembering our loved ones who have come before - All Soul's Day. On Friday evening November 2 at 6:30 p.m., we will celebrate All Souls, or properly called The Commemoration of All Faithful Departed, with a Requiem Mass. We cannot mock and deny death any longer, and the truth is that death affects us all here and now. Each of us has felt the grief that comes with losing someone we love. All Souls is a way of remembering, celebrating, and grieving the loss of those we love but see no longer. Our choir will be singing pieces from the Rutter Requiem. Finally, on Sunday morning November 4, we will celebrate All Saint's Day. Over the centuries, the church has identified individuals who have shown great faith in their lives and in their death, and serve as examples for us today. In particular, on Sunday we will honor St. Vincent of Spain, whose relic resides in our altar at St. Michael's. Vincent was a deacon, and adamantly professed his faith during the Great Persecution and suffered a cruel death for it at the hand of Emperor Diocletian. Even under the threat of torture and death, Vincent refused to burn the Scriptures and renounce his faith. Through each of these services we encounter something we like to forget: that each of us is mortal and one day our life will end. And throughout this triduum of celebration, liturgy, and grief, we also get to hear one more time of the saving love of God, who made a way for life even after our death. As the prayer book says, "even at the grave we make our song: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia." (BCP 499) I hope you have a chance to journey with us through this year's Allhallowtide. Jesse+ From Our Associate Rector for Christian Education The Rev. Lisa Erdeljon lerdeljon@stmichaelsbarrington.org Last week, I participated in a number of conversations

3 about power and authority. This week, I am participating in conversations about leadership. In fact, as I write this, I am currently sitting next to Fr. Jesse, in a conference room, learning about parish leadership. Topics of presentations within this three-day workshop range from Servant Leadership to Marketing and Communications. It is an interesting exercise to think about the balance between authority or power and leadership. I suspect they are directly related: the more authority, the more leadership. And while both are "learn-able," some people seem to be more comfortable with and more inclined to have both authority and leadership. Quick Links Our Website Little Angels Preschool Listen to Sunday Sermons The presentation on Servant Leadership was particularly interesting, as we discussed humility as a tool in leadership - the ability to empower other people to step up and lead - the willingness to "give up" your own authority and power. And yet, as one of my clergy peers said, "Giving up power is anxiety inducing because you also give up control." But isn't that the point of servant leadership and empowerment? It allows us to share the responsibilities of running the Church, and it shares the liability, too. When we can equally contribute to the progress and forwardthinking/moving of our church, then we can equally share the joys (and sorrows) of our future, as it unfolds before us. Just as I invited you to think about the spiritual practice of authority last week, this week I invite you to think about how you lead. Specifically, how do you use your authority, your power, your leadership to bring about God's Kingdom? I'm sure I'm "preaching to the choir" about authority and leadership (St. Michael's members seem to have an unlimited amount of leadership), but I always think it's a good thing to do: a personal check-in of our own leadership and our own use of authority and power, and of course, a check-in of how we are using all of that, as we live into our calling to be Christians. In the meantime, I'll see you at Bishop Joseph's reception on Saturday (if you're coming), at church on Sunday, and at Trunk-or-Treat next week! 2019 Stewardship Campaign Follow us on Facebook

4 Vestry Meeting Summary August 20, 2018 Click here. Click here. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. ~2 Corinthians 9:11 As a parish, one way or another, we are all rooted in faith, and growing in love. The tree on the Children's Stewardship Card is a reminder that the children of the church keep us grounded and demonstrate love at the same time. Each week we see the Sunday school grow and witness the kids gaining a stronger relationship with God. As we continued to discuss Children's Stewardship Card Stewardship, they mentioned they have seen their parents writing out checks to place in the envelope. This is the seeing and remembering that I spoke about last week. We reinforced this is a plan; they already know what they will write the check out for each week. Now the children can do like the adults of the church and have their own plan of serving, by checking the boxes of the Children's Card. Thus, they have begun to understand. Song is another way of expression and growing in God's love. Each week Sara Torbeck, the Director of Children's Music, teaches the kids of Sunday school a song. This Sunday, October 28, the Children's Choir will be singing during the 10:00 a.m. service. There is still time if your child would like to participate. Sara has choir practice on Saturdays at 9:15 a.m. - 9:45 a.m. and again at 9:15 a.m.

5 Little Red Wagon St. Cyprian Food Pantry is our focus in October and November. Click here for more about the history of St. Cyprian Food Pantry. Needs are: canned corn, yams, cranberries, canned pumpkin, instant potatoes, cereal, canned soups. before Sunday performances. Please join Sara this week! Or her at We would love a strong voice of children to sing for Bishop Joseph's visit this Sunday. Did you know we really advertised BIG within the community for Trunk or Treat? It is on Facebook and numerous flyers have been distributed at many local stores. This amazing free family and fun event will be a way for St. Michael's Church to serve our community. A living example of how we just taught the kids, in serving others is how we serve God. The purpose of Trunk or Treat is about...serving the children...serving the community. Both the police and fire departments will be here along with Davenport's spooky car. Will we have more trick or treaters or more cars on October 31? I hope more cars, and more names on the sign-up sheet in the hallway. PS: We also will have hotdogs and a full Moon Lamp to light up the parking lot. "Erin and her camera" volunteered to capture the memory and will be set up in a family picture area. Click here for this Sunday's AT HOME with the Good News. JR & SR LIFT Sunday School will meet together this week (10/28) in the Sturtz House with Miss Kay at 9:00 a.m. As always, hot chocolate and & donuts!
