Submission deadline for the next edition is October 15, FLASHLIGHT V O L U M E 2 8 N O. 4 From the President s Pen A U G U S T Dear Sisters and Brothers In Christ, One In Spirit, One In Purpose Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt His name together Psalm 34:3 LWML-Canada s 25 th Anniversary and 10 th Convention has come and gone and all the events and happenings are now History! What a Convention it was, the excitement, laughter, reuniting of friendships and tears, all made it a very memorable and a Very Special event to all attending. The Opening Worship Service had a few challenges getting started but, patience was diffidently tested, but once the singing and the Word was spoken, that was all put behind us, with the Praising and Glorifying of our Great Lord and Saviour. The fellowship that followed was electrifying and the Anniversary Cakes were delicious! The Vote on Restructuring was rejected by 2 votes. So now we move forward, with the existing structure and with lots of work ahead of us. One of the highlights of the Convention was the revealing of our New Logo the intertwined hearts illustrate women woven together with Christ like a tapestry, Christ s heart interlaced with our hearts, the love we have for Jesus, each other and those we serve with our time, talents and mites and the diversity of the women in Lutheran Church-Canada. Our newly elected LWML-Canada Officers are: President Linda Long, VP Christian Growth- Patricia Kreutzwieser; VP Christian Mission-Beverly McKean; VP Communications-Becky Wandio; VP Member Development-Annette Borchardt; Recording Secretary-Jamie Fulton; Financial Secretary-Fay Schatschneider and Treasurer-Vacant. Unfortunately, we, A-BC District, have lost some of our awesome elected officers, as no individual can hold office on more than one Board of Office at a time. I want to wish heartfelt Congratulations to Becky, Jamie and Fay as they move forward to be our leaders in the LWML-Canada Board of Elected Officers. Our prayers of encouragement, strength and wisdom are with each of you. I also want to welcome Sherley Hearty who is stepping up to Recording Secretary and Data Manager and Val Lowther who is stepping up to VP Communications for the A-BC District. Keep them in your prayers as they complete these positions to term. They both will be great contributors to our board, Thank you ladies! We are still needing to fill the position of VP Christian Growth, which was previously held by Irene Kaun. Thank you, Irene for your years of service in LWMLC, your knowledge and wisdom were a great asset to us. The final numbers for our 3 offerings are not finalized as yet but to date #1 Mites is $4,376.25; #2 PAT program $3,817.20; #3 Costa Rica $3, and Mission Walk $12, The Mission Projects slatted for this Triennium is $130, Praise God! He is Good! MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND PLAN TO ATTEND: LWMLC A-BC District Convention, June 20-22, 2019 at the Coast Plaza Hotel & Conference Centre, rd Street, NE, Calgary, AB. LWMLC South Alberta Zone will be our hosts. Theme: Serve With Gladness In Purpose and Spirit. Theme Bible Verse: Then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose Philippians 2:2 (NIV) Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen I Peter 4:10-11 God s peace, love and joy, Linda Horton LWMLC A-BC District President

Pastoral Counsellor - Rev. Darren Dressler PAGE 2 FINDING REST Family holidays, camping, trips to the lake, visiting with the relatives, or going for a hike all of these tend to be forms of rest and refreshment during these summer months. Many of our congregations have rest periods during the summer, too. Bible studies, Sunday school, confirmation, etc. these all take a rest. We know well our need for rest. There is rest at the end of a day, rest at the end of a week, and rest at the end of a season. Sometimes we can have negative feelings about rest. Are you weak because you need rest and can t keep going all the time? Is it a reminder of some sort of inadequacy? Or perhaps a reminder of aging? A more positive way to consider this is to acknowledge that we all have limits. There are limits on what we are able to do, think, and accomplish. Limits are not necessarily good or bad, they just are. Acknowledging our physical, emotional, social, cognitive, and spiritual limits helps us to grow in being comfortable with who we are. Our awareness of our own limits reminds us of our need for God s unconditional grace and love. Our limits remind us of our humanity, of our strengths and weaknesses, and our inability to do it all. That would be bad news if we depended on doing it all or having no limits for our sense of self-worth. If we really only matter because of what we are able to do, there is hardly any worse news than that. It is especially bad as we age, it is especially bad for the physically or intellectually disabled, and it is especially bad for who just can t seem to get it together like others. But as we anchor our identity in the rich and abiding love of God in Christ Jesus, it gives us the freedom to acknowledge the real depths of our humanity with all of its limits. And that can give us the freedom to rest, too. For as much as our culture (and even the Church, at times) would like your rest to be labelled as productive or somehow economically valuable, you and I have the freedom to rest just because we need to just because we have limits. One of our cultural inheritances from the Romantic period of the 1800s is a view of nature as a place of true spirituality or a place that can somehow be closer to God. While there can indeed be an important role for solitude in nature, for quiet contemplation, and the like, it is also important for us to acknowledge our limits there. As much as we value time alone, we find deeper fulfillment in communion with others. A family vacation isn t much of a family vacation if you re on your own. A visit to the playground, campground, or local festival isn t much of an experience if you re the only one there. Popping in to the local Lutheran Church for a Sunday service isn t a good experience if you re all alone. We can find rest with others as we are able to acknowledge our limits, our need for temporary solitude, and our need for a break from the regular routine. It encourages us to give others the freedom to take their own rest, too. We know our limits, and even if the limits of others are different, we recognize that they nevertheless have them. So we can honour those limits, honour our differences, and live in the freedom and joy that our value rests solidly on Jesus and not on our limits. May God bless your rest this summer! VP Member Development - Penny Bobier WOW! Did you attend the LWMLC Convention? What an exciting time, with surprises and changes! I was unfortunately not able to attend our national convention in Winnipeg; I would have loved to have been there to hear the discussion on changes to our current structure, to hear the pros and cons. You may know by now the motion to change our current structure was defeated. What does this mean to you and me? For you it means there will be an A-BC District Convention in 2019 for you to attend. For me it means that I will continue in my position as your VP Member Development until at least 2019 A-BC District Convention. Let s start planning now to attend the LWMLC A-BC DISTRICT CONVENTION on June 20-June 22, 2019 at the Coast Plaza Hotel & Conference Centre, Calgary, AB. The theme is Serve with Gladness in Purpose and Spirit based on Philippians 2:2 (NIV). Many convention plans and arrangements are already in place for Intersession Speakers; Special Offering recipients, Mission Walk and more. Remember, you don t have to be a LWMLC member to attend the convention. I can tell you from past experiences that having a group of ladies, from your society and/or congregation, attend the convention will multiply the fun and excitement and cut down on travel and room expenses. Maybe your society (Continued on page 3)

would like to raise funds to assist your ladies with the cost of attending the convention. Some ideas you might consider are: Host a silent auction, craft sale and/or bake goods sale prior to Christmas or Valentine s Day Host a Thanksgiving Dinner/luncheon in October Host a Friendship Tea/Fashion Show in the spring PAGE 3 Enabled to serve together in fellowship Encouraged as we share Christ and His love with other women at home and around the world Looking at the convention manual you may have noticed the lack of nominations for our LWML-C Executive. Thanks be to God that He caused women to come forward at the convention to let their names stand! We nearly have a full executive for LWMLC! For more details on what s happening with LWMLC, keep checking the LWML-Canada website at lutheranwomen.ca/. You may also have found out LWML-Canada has a new logo! The intertwined hearts of LWML-Canada s new logo illustrate: Women woven together with Christ like a tapestry Christ s heart interfaced with our hearts The love we have for Jesus, each other and those we serve with our time, talents and mites The diversity of the women in Lutheran Church- Canada We continue to be: Equipped as we study together in the Word Did you notice the litany, room devotions and the Convention Theme Hymn in the Convention Manual? I encourage you to use them at your upcoming renewals, retreats, meetings. The Convention Theme Hymn, CLOTHED IN CHRIST - One in Spirit, One in Purpose text was written by a member of the A-BC District. Thank you, Joyce, for sharing your talents with LWMLC. If you are looking for ideas for mission service in your society, read the various reports in the convention manual. Don t forget to share your renewal/rally and mission service information with your sisters in Christ by sending an article to the Flashlight editor! God Bless you as you continue to Equip, Enable and Encourage each other to study, serve and share the love of Christ! VP Christian Mission - Deborah Gruben ONE IN SPIRIT, ONE IN PURPOSE; SPARKED BY THE WORD, SENT TO THE WORLD Our God is an awesome God, He reigns from heaven above with wisdom, power and love... these words could not have been more relevant than at our National convention where His wisdom guided the voting delegates hands and the affirmation of the vote NOT to restructure, at this time. As a result, we now face the challenge to complete our mission projects and to select a new slate of projects for the next triennium. Currently, we need $35,560 to complete. As we approach LWMLC Sunday let each of us be challenged with God s power and love to finish the race He has set before us. In addition, I ask each of you to consider and submit mission project ideas. The guidelines are posted on the National and District web sites. Look around your neighborhoods, make suggestions and submit ideas, even if their half baked the project committee is here to help and guide you. You alone are the most knowledgeable person to identify the needs of your communities and church outreach activities. As my grandson likes to quote Paw Patrol no need is too small to ask for help especially from your Sisters in Christ. We welcome all submissions, with a deadline of October 31 and a grace period to Nov 15, I ve already received four projects that did not make the National ballot but let s share Gods love even more by submitting a project. May our God continue to bless and keep you until we meet again in Calgary for convention June In His Service, your VP Christian Mission, Deborah Gruben

Mission Update PAGE 4 I so enjoyed seeing the many shelves of quilts, kits etc. of much needed materials for those in need, in the Canadian Lutheran World Relief warehouse in Winnipeg. It was good to have a verbal presentation as to how the quilts are bundled, for God s outreach. The quilt block to the top right on the right quilt made for the CLWR 70 th Anniversary was made by Linda Wesley. There were other options for touring places of outreach of Christians. I chose the CLWR! The interest sessions were very enlightening and inspirational. Especially the one on Mercy end of life and Euthanasia. In fact, I am so wanting to communicate what the Christian doctor related to fact, (law), and how we might respond, I would welcome a special time to talk, included with feed-back conversation. Please pray about this and feel free to respond to my suggestion. Thanks and Praise be to God, Irene Kaun LWMLC members with the quilts included in the photo are Eloise Schaan & Ida Mall and her husband (picture taken by Doris Osgood at convention in Winnipeg) Dear Ladies of LWMLC A-BC District, Thank you for your patience as the website has undergone its transformation. Starting very soon upcoming events, news and information will be available on the website. More details will follow the inter-departmental meeting in September. God's Blessings, Stephanie Nielsen, A-BC District Web Facilitator

VP Communication - Valerie Lowther PAGE 6 Communicate A common enough word; according to Miriam Webster dictionary it means to convey knowledge of or information about: make known. Our District Vice President of Communication, Becky Wandio, has been elected to the national position of Vice President of Communication at Lutheran Women s Missionary League-Canada. We thank God for His wisdom and know that He will lead Becky in His service in this new position. In the meantime, until we have elections at the convention next year, I have been asked to step back into the District role and God has led me to respond in the affirmative. I m back. Convention is coming, Convention is coming The next few months will be a time of great anticipation as we prepare for the convention in Calgary on June 20 22, Our theme is Serve with Gladness in Purpose and Spirit. There are some deadlines that are quickly approaching, so put your thinking caps on, pull out all the stops and remember: Ideas for a logo design for the convention theme must be sent to Linda Horton by October 1st. (yikes, that s just a few weeks away!) Theme Hymns must be submitted by October 31st, to Linda Horton and Pastor Darren Dressler. Mission Grant Proposals must be in by October 31st. Your nominating Committee is Marilyn Witte, Helen Leonhardt, Val Royer, and Shirley Besler. Contact any one of them if you feel God calling you to serve on executive, or if you know anyone who would be suited to one of the positions. As for me, I m pretty busy trying to update all the District forms and such to include the new LWMLC logo. Check out the Lutheranwomen.ca website after August 1 st to see the presentation made at the convention in Winnipeg this July. We will, hopefully, have it ready for you to use on LWMLC Sunday in your congregation. May our Lord and Saviour bless you and keep you in His care. Your Sister in Christ, Val Lowther Vice President, Communications News to be shared in the Flashlight, Tapestry and online Sharing news about what your society or zone are doing helps others see the fellowship and opportunities to serve our Lord that are available through LWMLC. Send news and photographs for the Flashlight to Jane Huber, your district editor and for Tapestry and online to vice-president, communication, Becky Wandio, vpcommunication@lutheranwomen.ca.

Zone News PAGE 7 Spruce Grove celebrates LWMLC Silver Anniversary On June 6, 2018, Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church celebrated the 25 th anniversary of LWMLC during our year-end barbecue with family and friends at the Grove Seniors Village in Spruce Grove, AB. A delicious chicken dinner with salads and desserts was shared. In recognition of LWMLC s anniversary, the cutlery, plates, and napkins were silver in colour for this special occasion. Added to the evening was a quiz titled How well do you know Alberta? Participants had to name the city, town, or village displaying a monument relating to the area. A wonderful time of fellowship and fun was enjoyed by all. We also compiled a short history about LWMLC and our society s activities for the church bulletin. This was published for a few Sundays in June to recognize the event. God continues to bless the Peace society and LWMLC as we are Called to Serve others because our gracious God serves us. The only thing we asked in return was a donation to our local Food Bank and the diaconate program. Again our congregation came through with their faithful generosity. Our dessert was a beautiful blue and white cake with the inscription One in Spirit, One in Purpose and our display showed photos and a souvenir from the Founding Convention with articles from Flashlight and Tapestry that featured some of our members through the 25 years. Pastor Vic Esperanza graciously included a prayer and our LWMLC official theme hymn Lord, Jesus, You Have Called Us in our service. God has truly blessed LWML-Canada with faithful pastors, supportive congregations and devoted members. To God be the Glory!!

Recording Secretary and Data Manager We offer thanks to Jamie Fulton for her service as Recording Secretary and Data Manager and pray for the Lord's continued guidance as she fulfils her newly elected role as Recording Secretary for LWML- Canada. At the National Convention in Winnipeg in July, A-BC District presented a Locomotive Skit to bring invitation to the next National Convention to be held in BC in I was privileged to have read as part of my daily devotion on July 6th, as you may have also, a writing from John C. Maxwell entitled Connect Before Calling. As connection and communication are critical elements in influencing people in a positive way, it seemed appropriate to include, especially after the train skit at the close of the Convention. When we think of trains and what happens to them in a train yard we can compare that to connecting with the women in our leagues. The cars sitting on the tracks have great value because they're loaded with PAGE 9 cargo; they have a destination; and they even have a route to follow. But they don't have a way of getting anywhere on their own. They must hook up with a locomotive. As God blesses and develops my skills and gifts He has given me and my intuition, may I be an instrument for Him to be your connector as I complete the term of Recording Secretary and Data Manager for this triennium. Please update your records to reflect my contact information as we work together to join the train cars together across this nation, to grow in faith, serve God's people and share God's Son, our personal Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. To Him be the Glory. Do not worry if you are not chosen to be your Zone s YWR, you can still come. Talk to your zone and/or society about helping with some of the costs, and believe me, they would be delighted to help you come to the A-BC District Convention. 12 PAGE 12 Greeting to all my Sisters in Christ: Convention is over, decisions have been made, and we will move forward with loving support of each other and guidance from God. Our work is to complete our Mite mission goal, continue in Bible study, and plan our Triennium convention in This will require sacrifice in some cases of our financial worth, diligence in meeting together to study the Word, and encouraging each other as we are Called to Serve in many circumstances. To that end, I will share some stats to fill in the realities of our budget status. We are entering the last nine months of this triennium, and are facing a Mite shortfall. At the end of June we were at 63.6% of our Mite goal, and the outstanding balance is $73, or $8, per month to achieve our budget goal. We are all aware of limited personal budgets, lower membership, societies disbanding, and closing churches. We are being challenged and only through the loving guidance of our Heavenly Father will we be able to meet our goal. If you have any questions regarding my report, your individual societies mite gifts, or anything else, please feel free to contact me by: T: (403) E: bwood@telusplanet.net Mail: 612 Riverside Blvd NW High River AB T1V 2C1 I will be happy to answer your questions.
