2 Sunday, October 8, 2017 Service of Holy Eucharist Service of Lament and Hope To all who join in worship, we are grateful that you are here today! We invite all believers in Christ to receive the Sacrament with us. White grape juice is available. Gluten-free wafers are also available. If you would like us to bring the bread and wine to you, please notify one of the ushers. Nursery attendants are available during worship just off the South Lobby area for children ages 5 years and younger. If you arrive and no one is in the nursery, please notify one of the ushers to get the attendant. A changing table is available in the nursery. Pew Pads are located at the end of each pew. WELCOME We pray this worship time is enriching for your spiritual life. Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost: The prophet Ezekiel prophesies God breathing new life into dry bones. To those in exile or living in the shadows of death, these stories proclaim God s promise of resurrection. In baptism we die with Christ that we might also be raised with him to new life. PRELUDE WELCOME CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the minister begins. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. Trusting in the Spirit of God, let us confess our sin.

3 O Lord, If you held our sin against us, who could live, who could stand? We seem to have more faith in death than hope in your promise of life. We seek peace through war and find security in weapons. We abandon the hungry, sick, and dying, and pursue wealth by making others poor. And even so, you love us; still there is forgiveness with you! Therefore we worship you; for you alone, O Lord, can save us from death and redeem us from our sin. Amen. O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! If Jesus Christ dwells in you, the Spirit of God will be your life and the grace of God will be your righteousness. And if the Holy Spirit dwells in you, then God, who raised Jesus from the dead, will also give life to your mortal bodies. Friends, this is the good news of the gospel: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. 4 KYRIE Out of the depths we cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear our voices and be attentive to our prayers. We pray for those whose hope is lost, who feel dried up and cut off from you. By your grace, open their graves; bring them back to the land of the living. We pray for those who are oppressed, held captive by the power of death. Release them from their chains; unbind them and let them go! We pray for those who weep, lost and lifeless in fear and regret. Grant them the peace of your presence; show them what your love can do. We pray for those who are dying, the light of life fading in their eyes. Help them to believe in you so that they may live and never die. We thank you, O Lord, for having heard our prayers. Enable us to trust in you, and thus to see your glory; through Jesus Christ, the resurrection and the life. Amen. PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Lord God, Great I Am, you are resurrection and life. As we worship you this day, show us who we are: bearers of good news, messengers of resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The assembly is seated.

5 CHOIR ANTHEM: Prayer of St. Patrick (Mark Schweizer) Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger. Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me. FIRST READING: Ezekiel 37:1-10 Ezekiel s vision of the valley of dry bones is a promise that Israel as a nation, though dead in exile, will live again in their land through God s life-giving spirit. Three times Israel is assured that through this vision they will know that I am the Lord. A reading from Ezekiel. 1 The hand of the Lord came upon me, and he brought me out by the spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. 2 He led me all around them; there were very many lying in the valley, and they were very dry. 3 He said to me, Mortal, can these bones live? I answered, O Lord God, you know. 4 Then he said to me, Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. 5 Thus says the Lord God to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. 6 I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the Lord. 7 So I prophesied as I had been commanded; and as I prophesied, suddenly there was a noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. 8 I looked, and there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them. 9 Then he said to me, Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath: Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live. 10 I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood on their feet, a vast multitude. 11 Then he said to me, Mortal, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are cut off completely. 12 Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: I am going to open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people; and I will bring you back to the land of Israel. 13 And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people. 14 I will put my spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you on your own soil; then you shall know that I, the Lord, have spoken and will act, says the Lord. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God.

6 PSALM: Psalm 137 The psalm for the day is spoken responsively. 1 By the waters of Babylon we sat down and wept, when we remembered you, O Zion. 2 As for our harps, we hung them up on the trees in the midst of that land. 3 For those who led us away captive asked us for a song, and our oppressors called for mirth: "Sing us one of the songs of Zion." 4 How shall we sing the Lord's song upon an alien soil? 5 If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget its skill. 6 Let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you, if I do not set Jerusalem above my highest joy. 7 Remember the day of Jerusalem, O Lord, against the people of Edom, who said, "Down with it! down with it! even to the ground!" 8 O daughter of Babylon, doomed to destruction, happy shall they be who pay you back for what you have done to us! 9 Happy shall they be who take your little ones and dash them against the rock! SECOND READING: Revelation 21:1-6 John s vision shows us that in the resurrection the new age has dawned; God dwells with us already. Yet we wait for the time when the tears that cloud our vision will be wiped away. Then we will see the new heaven, new earth, and new Jerusalem. A reading from Revelation. 1 I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2 And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; 4 he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away. 5 And the one who was seated on the throne said, See, I am making all things new. Also he said, Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true. 6 Then he said to me, It is

7 done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION The assembly stands to welcome the gospel. GOSPEL: John 20:19-23 The risen Jesus appears to his disciples, offering them a benediction, a commission, and the gift of the Holy Spirit. The holy gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. 19 When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. 22 When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained. 8 APOSTLES CREED The assembly stands. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION PEACE The presiding minister and the assembly greet each other in the peace of the risen Christ. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. 9 OFFERING PRAYER Let us pray. Holy God, giver of life, we thank you for raising us up and joining us together as one people, your people, flesh and bone in the body of Christ. As you have delivered us from death, use our lives to proclaim the good news of new life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. EUCHARISTIC PRAYER LORD S PRAYER Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. The assembly is seated.

10 LAMB OF GOD COMMUNION When giving the bread and cup, the communion ministers say The body of Christ, given for you. The blood of Christ, shed for you. and each person may respond Amen. Sustain us in our pilgrimage. May our fasting be hunger for justice; our alms, a making of peace; and our prayer, the song of grateful hearts, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

STUDY AND DISCUSSION OPPORTUNITY: St. Paul s United Church of Christ invites the Laramie Community to participate in 6 session study and discussion series entitled White Privilege Let s Talk, A Resource for Transformational Dialogue. Race relations and Black Lives Matter are important topics that deserve open and honest discussion. All sessions will be held about two weeks apart on Wednesday evenings beginning at 7:00 PM at St. Paul s UCC, 602 E. Garfield in Laramie. This study will use materials created by the Center For Progressive Renewal and the United Church of Christ. At each session, participants will receive handouts, a list of readings (about 30 min. of reading between sessions), and videos that they can access prior to the meetings. Each session will be primarily focused on discussion of participant s reactions to the readings and videos. The dates for the sessions are October 11, November 1, November 15, November 29, and December 13. Each session can be attended without attending any other sessions.
