5 MISSION OPPORTUNITIES NOVEMBER COMMUNION OFFERING IN HIS STEPS MINISTRIES In His Steps Ministries (IHS) serves the community of Canton, Mississippi primarily through five programs that focus on prevention, intervention, compassionate services, family services, and sports ministry. Our main program, a preventive afterschool tutoring ministry that focus on the spiritual, physical, academic, social, and emotional needs of twenty at risk children was developed in The objective of the preventive ministry is to give the children the tools needed to become successful adults by tracking them from 2 nd grade through graduation and beyond. The preventive program was expanded to include a Saturday morning reading and science program. An intensive six-week summer enrichment program is also available for local youth whose targeted academic areas of weakness are strengthened to promote a more successful upcoming school term. As an addition to our Preventive Afterschool Enrichment, In His Steps recently started a Lego Robotics Program. This program will help challenge and develop students with STEM subject content as the need for these skills become more and more necessary. Participating students will learn computer programing techniques and create robots to their designs. SECOND SUNDAY HARVEST Grace Episcopal Church partnered with the Mississippi Food Network to provide food to the neediest among us. Grace Food Pantry is open from 10:00am-1:00 pm on the fourth Thursday of each month at Grace. If you would like to provide nonperishable food items to the pantry, please place your donations in the baskets located in the sub-story. ANGEL TREE Please look for upcoming information on our 2018 Angel Tree ministry. Methodist Memories. The first Methodist preacher to preach in Canton was Reverend Isaac Wells, a local preacher native of South Carolina, where he was born in He was converted in 1800 and soon afterward was licensed to preach. Coming to Mississippi sometime after that he settled in Franklin county, where a small stream, Wells creek, bears his name. Joining a considerable group from the older sections in southwest Mississippi he moved to Leake county, where he remained until his death in He was buried at Salem church, where he held his membership but a small church, called Wells Chapel, was in existence in Leake county for a number of years after his death. The exact date he preached his first sermon in Canton is not known, but it was very likely in 1834 or Taken from Methodism in Canton, Mississippi by Dr. J. Buford Cain, 1956.
