1 the Daily Disciple Monthly Newsletter of First Church of New Knoxville October 2018 Welcome to the New! We've heard it said that Fall is the second new year. It is often the time we start new schedules, declare a fresh start and change things up. We hope you enjoy this fresh new version of the Daily Disciple. Asbestos Removal Begins October 8 In This Issue: Articles from Pastor Joel and Youth Pastor Tory The congregation approved removal of asbestos ceilings and pipe wrappings in the church basement & other areas. The work is scheduled to take 4 days. Please do not enter areas that are blocked off during this time. More information inside. Upcoming Youth Events Nursery Relocation in October Update on Congregational Meeting & Asbestos removal Nursery relocation The nursery ministry during the 9:00 hour on Sundays will be located in the Kindergarten Sunday school room for the entire month of October. Trunk or Treat Trunk or Treat on October 25 NEW! A monthly calendar of activities Where can you connect to grow or disciple others? We had so much fun last year, let s do it again! 2 The topic of God s forgiveness came up in a recent conversation. We talked about how we struggle to wrap our mind around God s grace. We attach human expectations onto God, and assume he only has limited patience with us. How could God possibly forgive us over and over again for the same sin? Won t he get frustrated? Won t he run out of forgiveness? The answer, fortunately, is no. He will never get tired of us. He will never run out of grace. God doesn t operate by human standards. His patience, grace, and love are infinite, which is practically impossible to understand based on our limited human experience. The author of Hebrews used Old Testament sacrifices to help us understand Jesus death on the cross. Hebrews 10:11-14 says, 11 Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. In other words, Jesus death on the cross completely redeemed his people from sin. Not just the sin we already committed, either. Our past, present, and future sin has all been forgiven in Christ. Therefore, he won t run out of patience. We will always find forgiveness in Christ, because he already accomplished it on the cross. Run to him, then, and lay your burdens at his feet. You will find grace and peace there. I have been thanking God so many times over the past few weeks. It has been an amazing first month of Sunday school, youth group, confirmation and bible study. I am in awe of the way God has already been working in the life of our youth and children s ministry! Thank you to everyone that came out to celebrate the start of the year at our Fall-Block Party. The rain did not stop us from having a great time together as a church family! I mentioned in my last letter that our theme for the year at youth group is BE. Well, God changed that theme at the very last minute. Our new theme is FAMILY. 1 Corinthians 12:27 says Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. As a youth group we are part of the family of Christ and each student plays a unique role in contributing to the body of Christ. This year our Family theme will help us focus on growing together as a youth group family and growing in our faith in Christ. We want our students to see their value in Christ and find their belonging in the body of Christ. Our students are excited for the coming year. I cannot wait to see God work. Our youth ministry has a new leadership team. Our team members consist of Glenn Culp, Shelby Rohrbaugh, Jack and Sarah Schrolucke, Kelley Anspach and me. We have had a blast serving together at youth group and bible study. I cannot wait to see how God uses this team to impact the lives of our students. In October our Youth Leadership Team will be putting together a Student Leadership Team consisting of high school students from our youth ministry. Please be praying for us as we go through the applications and form this team of students. Blessings, Tory Breitigan

Have a question? Send it to her at connie.schroer@nktelco.net What are restricted endowments? Monetary gifts that have been given to the church, usually through an estate, whereby the gift or the interest earned (or both) is restricted to a specific purpose by the giver s will or trust. Can the purpose or use of the restricted endowments be changed? Not without a legal request. Can we borrow any of the restricted endowment funds for the heating system project? No. The stipulations are clear in the endowments that they are only to be used for their specific purposes. Even if we could borrow from them, the interest rates would not be favorable. THE BLUE JUG Thank you to all who placed gifts in the blue jug during September. $1,058 was collected and sent to Salvation Army Disaster Services.
5 Congregational Meeting: Asbestos Removal, Heating System Request for Proposal & Capital Campaign On September 9, 2018 the congregation approved a recommendation to hire Total Environmental Services, LLC of Toledo, Ohio to remove asbestos materials in the church at a cost of $26, which will be paid from the building maintenance fund. The ceiling in the boiler room, old coal room and basement nursery all contain asbestos, as does some of the steam piping insulation. The work will begin on October 8 and is expected to take 4 days. These areas will be blocked off and access limited. For your own safety, please do not enter areas that are off limits. The nursery will be re-located to the kindergarten Sunday school room for the entire month of October. Following the removal, Brumbaugh Herrick Inc. will perform air quality testing to ensure those areas are safe and free from any asbestos particles. At the August meeting Consistory approved hiring Lance Buettner of Smith-Boughan Mechanical and their team of engineers to assist the trustees with developing a Request for Proposal (RFP). This will be sent to mechanical contractors and be used by them to submit their design / build proposals for our new heating system. The trustees are hoping that the RFP will be ready to go out for bids by December. A project this size will cost more than we have available making a capital campaign necessary. We have approximately $200,000 available for use already, but more will be required. You will be receiving by mail a letter and pledge card for a 5 year heating system campaign at the beginning of October. We ask that you pray for God s provision for His house that we use to carry out ministry and prayerfully consider how you can help make the campaign a success. Promotion Sunday, the Fall Kickoff / Block Party and the start of Youth Group. Fall is in full swing!
6 Happy Birthday to Mildred Shellenberger who will celebrate a birthday on October 10. She is at Elmwood Assisted Living, 711 S. Walnut in New Bremen if you would like to send a card or visit. Congratulations to Kara Katterheinrich & Chad Sherrill who were united in Christian marriage on September 1. Kara is the daughter of John & Deb Katterheinrich. Chad is the son of Mike and Sandy Sherrill. Happy 50+ Anniversary to Don & Carol Heidt who celebrate 60 years on October 11 and Larry & Karen Niemeyer who celebrate 53 years on October 21. Dear First Church, Thank you for your gift to Young Lives in Zanesville. This year we had 16 teen moms involved in our events. We have 3 volunteer mentors, 2 childcare volunteers and myself. We took 5 teen moms to a YoungLives spring weekend and 3 moms to Rockbridge Camp this summer. We hope to take 5 more to a women s retreat this month. I am taking on a new role. I am training women in the Buckeye Region to do YoungLives! So if anyone is led to start YoungLives in Auglaize County let me know. It is now part of my calling to help get that started. You continue to bless me with your prayers & financial support. Thank you so much. Cheryl Reed, YoungLives, Zanesville, Ohio Thank you First Church for your generous donation! With the $400 you provided we were able to purchase 100 pieces of gently used campus wear pieces in cooperation with Agape. We were also able to purchase, 20 pairs of shoes, 40 pairs of underpants, 20 pairs of socks, 3 laundry baskets, and a garment rack for our in-house campus wear collection. We have many students who depend on our in-house collection of clothing to be properly dressed for school each day. That collection also allows for the occasional "oops" allowing students to remain properly dressed while we wash accidents away. This allows them to stay focused in the classroom instead of worrying about being out of uniform. Thank you for making a huge difference at Independence Elementary and loving our kids as much as we do. Mrs. Rohrbaugh, Independence Elementary, Lima City Schools. (Photo on back page) Dear First Church Family, We would like to say 'Thank you" to Pastor Joel, the church staff, Sharon Chaney on the piano, the sound men, the ladies of the church serving at the luncheon and the many who prepared the food for our family and friends. Thanks to all who opened their hearts to express a kind word, thought and deed. It could not have been any better. It is greatly appreciated, God Bless you all! Sincerely, The Bud Wright Family Dear First Church, thank you for the beautiful red rose for our anniversary. 62 years, what a blessing. Robert & Mary Schroer. Dear Friends, Thank you for your prayers after the horse Whisky ran through me! After 5 days off work, 4 cooked meals, 3 reflexology appointments, 2 chiropractor / massage visits and One God (plus one husband) who loves me, I am feeling 95% better! Again, thank you! Love in Christ Jesus, Jodi Rinehart. We extend our love and sympathy to the family of Rev. Robert Settlage who entered into Christ s care on Sunday, September 2, He was 86. Rev. Settlage was ordained here at First Church in He served churches in Wisconsin and Ohio. A memorial service was held at Plymouth Church in Newark, Ohio on Saturday, September 8, If you would like to send a card or note to his wife Peggy you can do so at 473 Arlington Ave., Newark, Ohio 43055
