2 Celebrate Holy Week at St. George Contributed by: Vicar, Bonnie Malone Take part in the great Holy Week Journey: Pilgrimage to Easter The notion of Pilgrimage is common to nearly all religions and cultures. It is the practice of setting out on a journey with the intent of spiritual discovery and awakening. Sometimes there is a required destination to visit at least once in a lifetime, other times it is much more open-ended -- just an "itch" that sends a person on "walkabout". In Christianity, the "great pilgrimage" is the journey through Lent and particularly, the walk through Holy Week. Some go to Jerusalem and retrace Jesus' steps. For those who cannot travel all the way to Holy Land, however, Holy Week services are a real and poignant way to experience these steps. The journey begins as Jesus and his disciples enter Jerusalem for the festival of Passover (a pilgrim s feast) to cries of "Hosanna!" and the waving of palm branches for the King. On this day, Palm Sunday, the terrible and surprising journey of Jesus' last week is told, from Hosanna, to trial and crucifixion. It is an overview of the week ahead. The journey continues on Maundy Thursday with the remembrance of the Last Supper, the washing of feet (we wash hands) when Jesus tells his disciples that they are his friends, and are called to serve as he served. The service concludes with the stripping of the altar, a symbolic act reminding us of the moment Jesus was torn away from his disciples by guards in the middle of the night. We leave the church in a hushed silence, recalling the fear and shock the disciples felt. Throughout the night, recalling how Jesus begged his disciples that night, after supper, to keep awake with him, we keep vigil in the church, until day break. On Good Friday we remember the crucifixion. Jesus' painful last hours, being betrayed, beaten, mocked, marched to Golgotha and crucified. It is a difficult day. We take up our cross and follow Jesus on this day. We remember it in part because, without it, the story of the coming resurrection is not as true. Jesus must die to be resurrected. It is part of the journey and it must be told and experienced to truly walk "the way" with Jesus. Finally, the miracle of Easter happens. In many churches a very late service on Saturday night, called the Easter Vigil, is kept. This vigil recounts the stories of old, as the people await the coming of "the Light of Christ", in Jesus' resurrection. Page 2 Believe me, when the week has been "walked" the joy of Easter becomes more profound, more real. It becomes a transforming journey. I hope we will begin to practice an Easter Vigil next year. This year, those who want to experience the early morning light of Jesus' resurrection can meet me at the church at 7:30 for the sunrise service. The next services will be at our usual times, 9:30 and 11:15. A schedule for Holy Week: Palm Sunday Services: 8 am, 9:30 am, 11:15 am Maundy Thursday: Noon Maundy Thursday Service 5 pm Maundy Thursday Soup & Bread Supper 7 pm Maundy Thursday Service (with washing of hands) 9 pm - 8 am The Watch (sign up in the church) 8 am (Friday) Morning Prayer closing the watch Good Friday: The Watch and closing morning prayer Noon Services with the Stations of the Cross 7 pm Good Friday services with the Stations of the Cross Easter Sunday Services: 7:30 am 9:30 am 11:15 am
3 Page 3 Newly Elected Bishop s Committee Contributed by Linda Beardslee, Associate Sr. Warden Last month in the Quest, Vicar Bonnie did a great job of talking about what the Bishop s Committee does and what our goals are for this year. Each month, we would like to continue to communicate to all the members of St. George about some of the important things that are happening. We want everyone to be in the loop and feel like their voices are heard. So this year, for the first time, Bonnie has delegated the Sr. Warden job to three people instead of one. Bless all the past Sr. Wardens who have carried this load alone! This year Stacy Sheagley is the Convening Sr. Warden. She will work with Bonnie on the work to be done and run the meetings and give strategic input. Denise Hayes and I (Linda Beardslee) are the Associate Sr. Wardens and, in Bonnie s plan, we are the people s wardens. If you have ideas, concerns or issues, please feel free to talk to any member of the Bishop s Committee, but Denise is usually available at the 11:15 service and I am usually there at the 9:30 service. We are happy to talk with you then or at any time. Duane Duvall is the all-important Jr. Warden and will focus on building maintenance and where to put our growing congregation and children! More about that later on - we have some ideas and they are pretty exciting! If you are new to St. George, we would like to get to know you. Look for the lavender badges we wear on Sunday each member of the Bishop s Committee has one. Let us know your thoughts and ideas. It is only by working together with all our church family that we will continue to grow our ministry in Maple Valley. This is a very important time for St. George and we need everyone working together to be successful! Project Linus Because of St.Anne's Rummage Sale on March 23rd and 24th, Project Linus will meet on March 30th, the 5th Friday. And the April meeting is Friday, April 27, at 11:30---right after Bible Study. Bring scissors, Exacto knives, and a crochet hook (I or J) as usual.
4 Page 4 St. George Easter Egg Hunt Contributed by Jenni Scharf This year the St. George Easter Egg Hunt is being put on by the MOPS and MOMSnext Group. We would love you to help us spread the word and join us! If you would like to donate prefilled plastic eggs for the Easter Egg Hunt bring them to church on Sunday or throughout the week anytime. The Easter Egg Hunt will be on SATURDAY, April 7th at 11:30 a.m. at St. George rain or shine! Easter Egg Hunt will promptly start at noon. Spread the word! This event is open to the community too. We ll have the Easter Egg Hunt, face painting and other fun activities for the kids! If you have questions call Jenni Scharf (jennischarf@comcast.net or ). News from St. Anne s Guild Contributed by Donna Selby St. Anne s primary focus these last couple of months has been the Annual Spring Rummage Sale! Lots of time and effort go into making this annual event succeed, and while this is being written prior to the Sale, we genuinely appreciate all the hard work and commitment that is being expended to insure the success of this year s Event! Watch for information on the outcome of this year s Sale in the May Quest! A decision was made to donate $ to the MV Community Center, and several members from St. Anne s & St. George attended the Fund Raiser Breakfast on March 15 th! We re certainly proud of the work that our Community Center has done in serving the needs of Maple Valley, and congratulate them on their many achievements! EASTER REFRESHMENTS: This year we re asking members of our congregation to bring cookies, snack/ finger food for the Coffee Hour on Easter Morning. Please bring your goodies into the kitchen prior to the 9:30 Service. St. Anne s members will put them out for a royal Easter Celebration! Thanks SO much!!! The next St. Anne s meeting will be held on April 13 th, at ll:15 in Litras Hall. Following a brief meeting, members will go out for lunch at a place chosen at that time! All women who can attend are so-o-o welcome, and we look forward to seeing you then!

Letter to the Editors Ronalyn and Jenni, Just wanted to thank you both for your time and effort put into St. George s Quest publication. It had been delivered to my computer while I was away, and so sat for a few weeks on my computer before I read it, which I just finished doing. Unfortunately some of the events have already gone by, but I look forward to reading the paper anyway. We re blessed having your talents for all to enjoy. Thanks again. Nick
