The Episcopal Church of the Atonement Atonement Sunday The Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost Holy Eucharist and Holy Baptism September 23, :00 am & 10:00 am 1

ATONEMENT SUNDAY Our new tradition Many churches celebrate a Founder s Day Sunday. Many others make a special celebration on their patronal feast day. The Episcopal Church doesn t have a Feast of the Atonement on the calendar, and we are not sure of exactly when the first Episcopalians gathered to worship from the Book of Common Prayer here in Westfield, although we think the year was September 14 is the Feast of the Holy Cross. And it was through Jesus death on the cross that God is reconciled to all of us, God s beloved creation thus making what theologians call atonement. Since 2013, the parish s 150 th year, we have celebrated ATONEMENT SUNDAY on a convenient Sunday near September 14. Our service today combines the liturgies of Baptism, Thanksgiving for a Church, and the Holy Eucharist. For our readings, we have chosen the Old and New Testament lessons for Holy Cross Day, and the Gospel for the 18 th Sunday after Pentecost. We are grateful for the permission of our bishop, The Rt. Rev. Douglas Fisher, to use worship materials from Enriching Our Worship as well as The Book of Common Prayer. Today we welcome an infant through Holy Baptism, and we welcome four Choral Scholars, Westfield State students, Lauren Console Pérez Soprano, Emily Stratton Alto, Sam Tsongalis Tenor, Jordan Allen Bass, who join us for a semester in our choir. Following the 10 am service, the Vestry invites you to join them for a festive coffee hour, and a brief report on The Spiritual Gifts Project. Voluntary Prelude and Fugue in G Johann Krebs Introit St. Francis Handbell Choir Quiet Praise Dan R. Edwards The Word of God All stand. The Hymnal 518 Christ is made the sure foundation Blessed be the one, holy, and living God. Glory to God for ever and ever. There is one Body and one Spirit; There is one hope in God s call to us; One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism; One God and Father of all. The Lord be with you. And also with you. 2

A Litany of Thanksgiving for a Church Book of Common Prayer, p. 578 Let us thank God whom we worship here in the beauty of holiness. Eternal God, the heaven of heavens cannot contain you, much less the walls of temples made with hands. Graciously receive our thanks for this place, and accept the work of our hands, offered to your honor and glory. For the Church universal, of which these visible buildings are the symbol, For your presence whenever two or three have gathered together in your Name, For this place where we may be still and know that you are God, For making us your children by adoption and grace, and refreshing us day by day with the bread of life. For the knowledge of your will and the grace to perform it, For the fulfilling of our desires and petitions as you see best for us, For the pardon of our sins, which restores us to the company of your faithful people, For the blessing of our vows and the crowning of our years with your goodness, For the faith of those who have gone before us and for our encouragement by their perseverance, For the fellowship of all your Saints, After a brief silence, the concludes with the following Doxology Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty; For everything in heaven and on earth is yours. Yours, O Lord, is the kingdom; And you are exalted as head over all. Amen. The First Reading Isaiah 45:21-25 Declare and present your case; let them take counsel together! Who told this long ago? Who declared it of old? Was it not I, the Lord? There is no other god besides me, a righteous God and a Saviour; there is no one besides me. Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am 3

God, and there is no other. By myself I have sworn, from my mouth has gone forth in righteousness a word that shall not return: To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear. Only in the Lord, it shall be said of me, are righteousness and strength; all who were incensed against him shall come to him and be ashamed. In the Lord all the offspring of Israel shall triumph and glory. Reader The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 98 At 8 am 1 Sing to the Lord a new song, * for he has done marvelous things. 2 With his right hand and his holy arm * has he won for himself the victory. 3 The Lord has made known his victory; * his righteousness has he openly shown in the sight of the nations. 4 He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to the house of Israel, * and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. 5 Shout with joy to the Lord, all you lands; * lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing. 6 Sing to the Lord with the harp, * with the harp and the voice of song. 7 With trumpets and the sound of the horn * shout with joy before the King, the Lord. 8 Let the sea make a noise and all that is in it, * the lands and those who dwell therein. 9 Let the rivers clap their hands, * and let the hills ring out with joy before the Lord, when he comes to judge the earth. 10 In righteousness shall he judge the world * and the peoples with equity. 4

Psalm 98 at 10 am The Second Reading Philippians 2:5-11 Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted 5

him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Reader The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The people stand. At 10 am The Hymnal 490 I want to walk as a child of the light The Gospel Mark 9:30-37 Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus and his disciples passed through Galilee. He did not want anyone to know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, The Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise again. But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him. Then they came to Capernaum; and when he was in the house he asked them, What were you arguing about on the way? But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another who was the greatest. He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all. Then he took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to them, Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sermon The Rev. Nancy Webb Stroud Holy Baptism At 10 am Presentation and Examination of the Candidate Book of Common Prayer, p. 301 The says The Candidate for Holy Baptism will now be presented. Parents and Godparent I present Gus Howard Kreke to receive the Sacrament of Baptism. When all have been presented the asks the parents and godparents Will you be responsible for seeing that the child you present is brought up in the Christian faith and life? Parents and Godparent I will, with God s help. Will you by your prayers and witness help this child to grow into the full stature of Christ? Parents and Godparent I will, with God s help. 6

Then the asks the following questions of the parents and godparent who speak on behalf of the child Question Answer Question Answer Question Answer Question Answer Question Answer Question Answer Do you renounce Satan and all the spiritual forces of wickedness that rebel against God? I renounce them. Do you renounce the evil powers of this world which corrupt and destroy the creatures of God? I renounce them. Do you renounce all sinful desires that draw you from the love of God? I renounce them. Do you turn to Jesus Christ and accept him as your Savior? I do. Do you put your whole trust in his grace and love? I do. Do you promise to follow and obey him as your Lord? I do. After all have been presented, the addresses the congregation, saying Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support this person in his life in Christ? We will. At 8 am and 10 am The then says Let us join with those who are committing themselves to Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant. The Baptismal Covenant Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. 7

Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God s help. Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God s help. Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? I will, with God s help. Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? I will, with God s help. Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will, with God s help. Will you cherish the wondrous works of God, and protect the beauty and integrity of all creation? I will, with God s help. At 8 am May Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and bestowed upon us the forgiveness of sins, keep us in eternal life by his grace, in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen. At 10 am Prayers for the Candidate The then says to the congregation Let us now pray for this child who is to receive the Sacrament of new birth. Leader Leader Leader Leader Leader Leader Deliver him, O Lord, from the way of sin and death. Lord, hear our prayer. Open his heart to your grace and truth. Lord, hear our prayer. Fill him with your holy and life-giving Spirit. Lord, hear our prayer. Keep him in the faith and communion of your holy Church. Lord, hear our prayer. Teach him to love others in the power of the Spirit. Lord, hear our prayer. Send him into the world in witness to your love. Lord, hear our prayer. 8

Leader Bring him to the fullness of your peace and glory. Lord, hear our prayer. The says Grant, O Lord, that all who are baptized into the death of Jesus Christ your Son may live in the power of his resurrection and look for him to come again in glory; who lives and reigns now and for ever. Amen. Thanksgiving over the Water The blesses the water, first saying The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. At the following words, the touches the water Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. The Baptism The candidate is presented by name to the, who then pours water upon the candidate, saying Gus Howard, I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Then the Priest places a hand on the person s head, marking on the forehead the sign of the cross using Chrism and saying Gus Howard, you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ s own for ever. Amen. Then the Priest prays, saying Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon this your servant the forgiveness of sin, and have raised him to the new life of grace. Sustain him, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give him an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. The says Let us welcome the newly baptized. 9

and We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood. The stand. The Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Welcome and announcements The Great Thanksgiving An offering of money is received (during the anthem at 10 am). Then the people stand (to sing the hymn at 10 am) while the gifts of money, bread, and food are offered. At 10 am Choir Anthem Sing a New Song to the Lord David G. Wilson Sing a new song to the Lord, he to whom wonders belong! Rejoice in his triumph and tell of his power O sing to the Lord a new song! Now to the ends of the earth see his salvation is shown! And still he remembers his mercy and truth, unchanging in love to his own. Sing a new song and rejoice, publish his praises abroad! Let voices in chorus with trumpet and horn, resound for the joy of the Lord! Join with the hills and the sea, thunders of praise to prolong! In judgment and justice he comes to the earth O sing to the Lord a new song! Words: Psalm 98, paraphrase by Timothy Dudley-Smith Music: David G. Wilson The people stand. At 10 am The Hymnal 439 What wondrous love is this The people standing, the says The Lord be with you. Enriching Our Worship, 1 And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. The proceeds All thanks and praise are yours at all times and in all places, our true and loving God; through Jesus Christ, your eternal Word, the Wisdom from on high by whom you created all things. You laid the foundations of the world and enclosed the sea when it burst out from the womb; You brought forth all creatures of the earth and gave breath to humankind. Wondrous are you, Holy One of Blessing, all you create is a sign of hope for our journey; And so as the morning stars sing your praises we join the heavenly beings and all creation as we shout with joy: 10

At 8 am Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. At 10 am and The Hymnal, S129 The continues Glory and honor are yours, Creator of all, your Word has never been silent; you called a people to yourself, as a light to the nations, you delivered them from bondage and led them to a land of promise. Of your grace, you gave Jesus to be human, to share our life, to proclaim the coming of your holy reign and give himself for us, a fragrant offering. Through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, you have freed us from sin, brought us into your life, reconciled us to you, and restored us to the glory you intend for us. We thank you that on the night before he died for us Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, gave it to his friends and said: Take, eat, this is my Body, broken for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper Jesus took the cup of wine, said the blessing, gave it to his friends and said: Drink this, all of you: this cup is the new Covenant in my Blood, poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. And so, remembering all that was done for us: the cross, the tomb, the resurrection and ascension, longing for Christ s coming in glory, and presenting to you these gifts your earth has formed and human hands have made, we acclaim you, O Christ: and Dying, you destroyed our death. Rising, you restored our life. Christ Jesus, come in glory! 11

The continues Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts of bread and wine that they may be to us the Body and Blood of your Christ. Grant that we, burning with your Spirit s power, may be a people of hope, justice and love. Giver of Life, draw us together in the Body of Christ, and in the fullness of time gather us with all your people into the joy of our true eternal home. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, we worship you our God and Creator in voices of unending praise. and At 8 am Blessed are you, now and for ever. Amen. and at 10 am And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, hallowed be your Name, thy kingdom come, your kingdom come, thy will be done, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. on earth as in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, Forgive us our sins as we forgive those as we forgive those who trespass against us. who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation, Save us from the time of trial, but deliver us from evil. and deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, For the kingdom, the power, and the power, and the glory, and the glory are yours, for ever and ever. Amen. now and for ever. Amen.
