Amen. The First Lesson Acts 2:1-21 When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-- in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power. All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, What does this mean? But others sneered and said, They are filled with new wine. 6 The Second Lesson Romans 8:22-27 We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. Nancy Webb Stroud Renewal of Baptismal Vows Do you reaffirm your renunciation of evil and renew your commitment to Jesus Christ? I do. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? 6

7 I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God s help. Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God s help. Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? Open the hearts of those who are saved, and who know no lack, to extend the power of God s love and mercy to those who suffer from lack of basic needs. We are amazed and perplexed by the grip of opioid addiction within our communities, by the throes of poverty in our midst, and by the tragedy of mental illness afflicting young and old alike. May the power of the Holy Spirit blow a cleansing wind of change and healing where it is needed. Come Holy Spirit fill the hearts of your faithful. +God s deeds of power are known to those who have ears to hear, and the breath of the Holy Spirit brings solace and hope to those who suffer from illness and other trials in life. I invite you to offer the names of those for whom you pray. Silence is kept. May those who suffer be lifted from their sorrows on this Day of Pentecost. 12 The Gifts of God for the of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. All are welcome to receive the presence of God in the Bread and Wine at our Altar. Standing or kneeling is appropriate at the Altar rail. To receive the bread, place one hand over the other and the wafer will be placed in your palm. To receive the wine, you may take a sip from the chalice, or dip the edge of your wafer into the wine. If you wish to receive a blessing instead, please signal us by crossing your arms over your chest. Gluten free wafers and chalice are available; please let us know if you require that. If you are unable to come to the Altar please inform an usher, and Communion will be brought to you.
