6 The Second Reading Hebrews 7:23-28 The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office; but Jesus holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Consequently he is able for all time to save those who approach God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. For it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests, he has no need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for those of the people; this he did once for all when he offered himself. For the law appoints as high priests those who are subject to weakness, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever. Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, Son of David, have mercy on me! Jesus stood still and said, Call him here. Nancy Webb Stroud The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. 6

7 We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People Based on the Collects for Propers Deacon: Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve. We come to you this day with minds and hearts open to receive your loving grace. Response: Lord, we pray that your grace may always precede and follow us. Almighty and everlasting God, preserve the works of your mercy, that your Church throughout the world may persevere with steadfast faith in the confession of your name. Lord, we pray that your grace may always precede and follow us. Almighty and everlasting God, you have revealed your glory among the nations. Fill our government leaders Donald, Elizabeth, Ed, Richie, Charlie and our local civic leaders with the power of your grace, that they may lead us in your justice and truth. Lord, we pray that your grace may always precede and follow us. Almighty and everlasting God, our world at times seems to be in darkness. We pray that our world and all the nations therein may be bathed in the light of Christ and know the joy of being your chosen people. Lord, we pray that your grace may always precede and follow us. Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity that we may be given to good works to the benefit of those in our communities who are not as fortunate as we here assembled. We pray for the people of the First Baptist Church of Wakefield that was destroyed by fire this week. Lord, we pray that your grace may always precede and follow us. Almighty and everlasting God, pour upon us the abundance of your mercy: we give thanks for our many blessings, especially for Finn Krok for whom the Altar memorials have been offered; and we intercede for those who are ill and in need of your healing love and grace. The Congregation is invited to add names. With hope in our hearts: Lord, we pray that your grace may always precede and follow us. Almighty and everlasting God, we pray for the departed, remembering especially Dave Koerber and Patricia Asiltine, recently departed; Geraldine Krok and Flora Reardon for whom the altar memorials have been given; Stuart Bates Webb, Julia Haas Webb, Samuel Shober Stroud and Judith Macy Stroud for whom the sanctuary lamp burns. Beggar God, you call us from the roadside to see ourselves in you: let us take heart and come to you, though your road leads to Calvary and absent sun, to love revealed for lightless eyes; through Jesus Christ, the image of the invisible God. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen. Through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, you have freed us from sin, brought us into your life, reconciled us to you, and restored us to the glory you intend for us. We thank you that on the night before he died for us Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, gave it to his friends and said: Take, eat, this is my Body, broken for you. 10 After supper Jesus took the cup of wine, said the blessing, gave it to his friends and said: Drink this, all of you: this cup is the new Covenant in my Blood, poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. And so, remembering all that was done for us: the cross, the tomb, the resurrection and ascension, longing for Christ s coming in glory, and presenting to you these gifts your earth has formed and human hands have made, we acclaim you, O Christ: Celebrant and People Dying, you destroyed our death. Rising, you restored our life. Christ Jesus, come in glory! The Celebrant continues Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts of bread and wine that they may be to us the Body and Blood of your Christ. Grant that we, burning with your Spirit s power, may be a people of hope, justice and love. Giver of Life, draw us together in the Body of Christ, and in the fullness of time gather us with all your people into the joy of our true eternal home. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, we worship you our God and Creator in voices of unending praise. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. All are welcome to receive the presence of God in the Bread and Wine at our Altar. Standing or kneeling is appropriate at the Altar rail. To receive the bread, place one hand over the other and the wafer will be placed in your palm. To receive the wine, you may take a sip from the chalice, or dip the edge of your wafer into the wine. If you wish to receive a blessing instead, please signal us by crossing your arms over your chest. Gluten free wafers and chalice are available; please let us know if you require that. If you are unable to come to the Altar please inform an usher, and Communion will be brought to you. WHITE BAGS for PUBLIC SCHOOLS this month will be going to Highland School where the need is for hand soap (pump style) and hand sanitizer. Please pick up a bag or two and help our community where the need is greatest. SAFE CHURCH TRAINING Saint David s, Agawam is hosting a Safe Church Training for volunteers on Sunday, November 4 from 1:00 to 4:00. All Church leaders are encouraged to take the Safe Church training, and it is required for everyone who works with children and/or ministers to people in their homes. WESTFIELD FARMERS MARKET WINTER MARKETS will hold three indoor Winter Markets in the Church. The dates are Saturdays, November 17, December 8 and February 9. The hours are 10 am to 3 pm. A great place to get some of your Holiday shopping done! As we have had all summer, we feature 25 to 30 local vendors and crafters selling all sorts of fresh produce and many other products. There will also be live music, thanks to a grant from the Westfield Cultural 14

15 Council. SNAP and HIP benefits are accepted, and we will match up to $5.00 when SNAP tokens are purchased at the Market Table. We now accept all major credit cards. Frank Allen, who was our stewardship preacher in Many of us have taken Frank s Spiritual Gifts Inventory and reported back on their strongest gifts. (And some of us have taken the inventory and not reported back, but there is still time!) But whether your name is on a chart in the Narthex or not, it is truth that God has given you, and me, and all of God s beloved, gifts for living our lives in God s love. This year, our Stewardship theme is Celebrating our Gifts. Last week, you may have heard our Presiding Bishop talk about following the Way of Love. (To see a video of his sermons, go to In today s sermon, you have heard a little bit about how God s gifts give us the power to follow the Way of Love. Next week, we welcome The Rev. Canon Richard Simpson, who will tell us more! In this season of celebration of God s gifts to us, we are also asking very specifically for gifts from you to all of us who gather as the church. Your financial gifts allow us to maintain this building, pay our professional staff, and administer programs for the good of our members, the people of our surrounding community, and people in need around the world. You will receive more information about Celebrating Our Gifts in the mail, along with a pledge card. We ask you to pray in gratitude for all of the gifts God has given you and us, the Church. Then we ask you to pray about your financial gift to The Episcopal Church of the Atonement in We will gather your pledge on Sunday, November 11 at the 8 am and 10 am services, and then gather as the church for a celebration brunch, beginning at 11:30 am.
