The Episcopal Church of the Atonement The First Sunday after the Epiphany The Baptism of Our Lord Jesus Christ Holy Baptism and Holy Eucharist January 13, :00 & 10:00 am 1
Today we welcome Joshua Tuckerman Burke into the household of God through the sacrament of Holy Baptism. Voluntary Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam Dietrich Buxtehude The Word of God Hymnal 135 vs. 1-3 Songs of thankfulness and praise Priest Priest Priest Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be God s kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. There is one Body and one Spirit. There is one hope in God s call to us; One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism. One God and Father of all. The then says The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. The First Reading Isaiah 43:1-7 Thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my sight, and honored, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life. Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you; I will say to the north, Give them up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring my sons from far away and my daughters from the end of the earth everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made. Reader The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. At 8 am Psalm 29 1 Ascribe to the LORD, you gods, * ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. 2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his Name; * worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness. 3 The voice of the LORD is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders; * the LORD is upon the mighty waters. 2
4 The voice of the LORD is a powerful voice; * the voice of the LORD is a voice of splendor. 5 The voice of the LORD breaks the cedar trees; * the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon; 6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, * and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox. 7 The voice of the LORD splits the flames of fire; the voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; * the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. 8 The voice of the LORD makes the oak trees writhe * and strips the forests bare. 9 And in the temple of the LORD * all are crying, Glory! 10 The LORD sits enthroned above the flood; * the LORD sits enthroned as King for evermore. 11 The LORD shall give strength to his people; * the LORD shall give his people the blessing of peace. At 10 am Psalm 29 3
The Second Lesson Acts 8:14-17 When the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. The two went down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit (for as yet the Spirit had not come upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus). Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. Reader The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The people stand. At 10 am Hymn 121 Christ, when for us you were baptized The Gospel Luke 3:15-17, The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with 4
unquenchable fire. Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sermon The Rev. Keep him in the faith and communion of your holy Church. Lord, hear our prayer. Teach him to love others in the power of the Spirit. Lord, hear our prayer. Send him into the world in witness to your love. Lord, hear our prayer. Bring him to the fullness of your peace and glory. Lord, hear our prayer. The says Grant, O Lord, that all who are baptized into the death of Jesus Christ your Son may live in the power of his resurrection and look for him to come again in glory; who lives and reigns now and for ever. Amen. Thanksgiving over the Water The blesses the water, first saying The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. continues We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. At the following words, the touches the water 7
Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. The Baptism The candidate is presented by name to the, who then pours water upon the candidate, saying Joshua Tuckerman, I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Then the Priest places a hand on the person s head, marking on the forehead the sign of the cross using Chrism and saying Joshua Tuckerman, you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ s own for ever. Amen. Then the Priest prays, saying Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon this your servant the forgiveness of sin, and have raised him to the new life of grace. Sustain him, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give him an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. The says Let us welcome the newly baptized. and We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood. Shine for your people, O God; make us one human family who clothe each other with mercy and feed each other with justice. This day and always, Christ, be our Light. Shine in our hearts, O God; help us to reach to the heavens and deep in our souls to seek you, to find you, and to know you. This day and always, Christ, be our Light. 8
Today we remember especially Irakli G. Kallfa and Georgiana Tsianco Kallfa, for whom the sanctuary lamp burns; and all those we call before you now. may offer names silently or aloud Teach us to follow their lead to outrageous faith and eternal love. This day and always, Christ, be our Light. Shine for the afflicted, O God; remind them of your deep compassion and how you tenderly bear all our sorrows. Particular intercessions and petitions may be offered. This day and always, Christ, be our Light. The adds a concluding Collect, Shine, O God, as the Light that creates, the Light that calls, the Light that comes again with every dawn. Shine as the Light that scatters every shadow, and the Light in which we promise to walk, with your help. Amen. The Confession Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The Priest stands and says Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The stand. The Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Welcome and announcements The Great Thanksgiving An offering of money is received (during the anthem at 10am). Then the people stand to sing the hymn while the gifts of money, bread, and food are offered. At 10 am Offertory Anthem Wade in the Water Traditional Spiritual Refrain: Wade in the water, wade in the water, children, wade in the water, God s a-gonna trouble the water 1.See that host all dressed in white, God s a-gonna trouble the water. The leader looks like the Israelite, God s a-gonna trouble the water. Refrain 2.See that band all dressed in red, God s a-gonna trouble the water. Looks like the band that Moses led, God s a-gonna trouble the water. Refrain 9
3.Look over yonder, what do I see? God s a-gonna trouble the water. The Holy Ghost a-coming on me, God s a-gonna trouble the water. Refrain Hymnal 448 vv If you don t believe I ve been redeemed, God s a-gonna trouble the water. Just follow me down to Jordan s stream, God s a-gonna trouble the water. Refrain O love, how deep, how broad, how high The people standing, the says The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. The proceeds It is truly right to glorify you, Father, and to give you thanks; for you alone are God, living and true, dwelling in light inaccessible from before time and for ever. Fountain of life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with your blessing; you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance. Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night and day; and, beholding the glory of your presence, they offer you unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we acclaim you, and glorify your Name, as we sing, Sanctus Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The Hymnal, S128 The people stand or kneel. Then the continues We acclaim you, holy Lord, glorious in power. Your mighty works reveal your wisdom and love. You formed us in your own image, giving the whole world into our care, so that, in obedience to you, our Creator, we might rule and serve all your creatures. When our disobedience took us far from you, you did not abandon us to the power of death. In your mercy you came to our help, so that in seeking you we might find you. Again and again you called us into covenant with you, and through the prophets you taught us to hope for salvation. Father, you loved the world so much that in the fullness of time you sent your only Son to be our Savior. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, he lived as one of us, yet without sin. To the poor he proclaimed the good news of salvation; to prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. To fulfill your purpose he gave himself up to death; and, rising from the grave, destroyed death, and made the whole creation new. And, that we might live no longer for ourselves, but for him who died and rose for us, he sent the Holy Spirit, his own first gift for those who believe, to complete his work in the world, and to bring to fulfillment the sanctification of all. When the hour had come for him to be glorified by you, his heavenly Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end; at supper with them he took bread, and when 10
he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Father, we now celebrate this memorial of our redemption. Recalling Christ s death and his descent among the dead, proclaiming his resurrection and ascension to your right hand, awaiting his coming in glory; and offering to you, from the gifts you have given us, this bread and this cup, we praise you and we bless you. and We praise you, we bless you, we give thanks to you, and we pray to you, Lord our God. The continues Lord, we pray that in your goodness and mercy your Holy Spirit may descend upon us, and upon these gifts, sanctifying them and showing them to be holy gifts for your holy people, the bread of life and the cup of salvation, the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become one body and one spirit, a living sacrifice in Christ, to the praise of your Name. Remember, Lord, your one holy catholic and apostolic Church, redeemed by the blood of your Christ. Reveal its unity, guard its faith, and preserve it in peace. Remember Michael, Douglas, Nancy and Pat and all who minister in your Church. Remember all your people, and those who seek your truth. Remember all those on our prayer list. Remember Joshua Tuckerman Burke, baptized today. Remember Irakli G. Kallfa and Georgiana Tsianco Kallfa for whom the sanctuary lamp burns, and all who have died in the peace of Christ, and those whose faith is known to you alone; bring them into the place of eternal joy and light. And grant that we may find our inheritance with the Blessed Virgin Mary, with patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and all the saints who have found favor with you in ages past. We praise you in union with them and give you glory through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, all honor and glory are yours, Almighty God and Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and for ever. Amen. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. 11
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread The breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept. Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.
