4 WORSHIP NEWS Contact: Wayne Efferson, Director of Worship , x206 or AFRICAN PALMS USA Since 1976, this outreach program of St. John s Church, Olney, MD sells more than 15 million (to 2,600 churches) annually. Over the years, grants support East African countries like Tanzania with self-help programs and community projects, such as (HIV/AIDS). The crosses are made by Africans from native palms. Since 1995, the Worship Commission has made these available every Palm Sunday and collected donations well over $5,700. Again, thank you for your donations to carry on this important mission work. FAST AND ABSTINENCE Catholics are to keep the Lenten fast and abstinence according to the following directives: Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, all the Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday. On these days of complete abstinence, meat or soup or gravy made from meat are not to be eaten. Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday, in addition to abstaining from meat, are bound to fast as well on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting means eating only one full meal per day. Smaller amounts of food may be taken at two other meals, but no food should be eaten between meals. The obligations to fast ceases with the celebration of one s 59th birthday. STATIONS OF THE CROSS (Mondays this Lent) Two Styles Offered - Traditional & Contemporary Traditional (scripture based) Contemporary (reflections by Sr. Joan Chittisler Gateway to Resurrection) Dates vary: Monday, March 14 Contemporary Monday, March 21 Traditional Stations of the Cross are held at 6:30 PM in Church. BEHOLD THE WOOD OF THE CROSS MAKE A BED FOR A HOMELESS PERSON Do you have any old blankets, quilts, and/or mattress pads (no electric blankets please) that you would like to donate for making portable sleeping bags for the homeless in Milwaukee. Ann Birr-Ruelle, is one of many volunteers who make the sleeping bags for the outreach work of Repairers of the Breach, downtown Milwaukee. Past Lents you provided hundreds of blankets and Ann was able to sew hundreds of sleeping bags (7 blankets sewed together; back strap included!). Drop off your blankets in the Narthex or Parish Office during Lent. We need 8-10 people to carry our large cross in procession for the Veneration of the Cross on Good Friday, at the 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM services. Please sign-up in the Sacristy, or call the Parish Office at

5 NURSING HOME VOLUNTEERS NEEDED We are in need of adding to our volunteers who assist with our weekly Thursday Mass at Maple Ridge Nursing Home. You would assist with helping residents from their rooms to the commons where Mass is celebrated each week. This commitment is from approximately 1:45 to 3:30 PM. If interested, please contact: Wayne Efferson, Director of Worship , x206 or HUNGERING TO GROW A NEW TOMORROW This week s CRS Rice Bowl country is the island nation of Madagascar, where we re reminded of the important role farmers play in caring for God s creation. As we prepare our meals throughout the week, let us reflect on where our food comes from ~ and what role we can play in caring for our environment. Visit crsricebowl.org for more information. TAIZE PRAYER Wednesday, March 16, at 6:30 PM in the Chapel. Taize (pronounced-- Teh-ZAY) is an ecumenical, peaceful way to pray, using easy to learn musical chants, silent meditation, and scripture readings...a meditative, common prayer. Gathered in faith, Christians come together to sing uncomplicated repetitive short songs, like breath prayers, uncluttered by too many words, allowing the mystery of God to become tangible through the beauty of the Spirit in its simplicity. A few words sung over and over again (mantra), reinforce the meditative quality of prayer. They express a basic reality of faith that can quickly be grasped by the intellect, and will gradually penetrate the whole being. This contemplative style of prayer is a great way to unwind. A en on Parishioners, we will be collec ng the Rice Bowls at all Masses next weekend (Palm Sunday). Please con nue pu ng dona ons in the Rice Bowls this week and remember to bring them to Mass with you next weekend. This collec on helps to prevent hunger and poverty around the world. Thank you for helping those in need. Come experience the solitude. EASTER VIGIL CHOIR (Easter Vigil Mass - 8:00 PM, March 26) Calling all Easter Vigil Singers! LET S MAKE OUR HOUSE INVITING On any given week there are at least 1,500 worshippers who come through our church doors to celebrate the Eucharist (Mass). With all those worshippers comes a messy pew, e.g., songbooks, pew cards not properly stored in the hymnal racks and/or bulletins and trash left in the pew after Mass. In an effort to keep our House of God fresh and inviting for the next group of worshippers, we ask you to help keep the pews in an orderly fashion when you leave. Currently, the Ushers try their best to clean up after each Mass, and the Church Helpers come once a week to clean the candle stands and holy water bowls, in addition to recycling the bulletins and attending to the pews. Let s make our house inviting by storing the pew cards inside the songbooks, with the songbooks stored horizontally with the spine facing up. This little habit done over and over each time you come to Mass will truly help make our church inviting for all who enter these doors. DISPOSAL OF OLD SACRED OBJECTS Would you like to dispose of or retire your old religious books, articles and sacred items (sacramentals)? There is a container (gold box) in the Narthex for these items. Sacred items and articles in good condition will be given to the missions and/or St. Vincent de Paul Store. We will properly dispose of any items that are not in good condition. 6
