2 A MESSAGE FROM FR. RON POGUE CULTIVATING FRUITFULNESS: THE PRACTICE OF EXTRAVAGANT GENEROSITY Since Easter, we ve been reflecting on five practices that are vital in fruitful congregations. This week, we focus on the fifth practice, Extravagant Generosity. Generosity describes the Christian s unselfish willingness to give in order to make a positive difference for the purposes of Christ. Congregations that practice Extravagant Generosity provide ministries that address our spiritual need to give in ways that exceed all expectations and extend to unexpected measures. Fruitful congregations thrive because of extraordinary sharing, willing sacrifice, and joyous giving out of love for God and neighbor. Through the practice of Extravagant Generosity, we offer our resources in a manner that supports the causes that transform life and relieve suffering and that enlarges the soul and sustains the spirit. God uses our giving to reconfigure our interior lives and form us anew. Later this year, you will be invited to consider extravagant generosity in relation to your material treasures. During the month of June, we will be conducting a parish-wide initiative that focuses on stewardship of time, talent, service, and witness as we invite you to get involved in one or more of the ministries of this parish. If you are already involved, great! This may be a time for you to consider serving in another way or a different way. If you are not involved, this is a time for you to consider ways you can lend your time and energies to the impact of St. John s on the community and the world. Our catechism in The Book of Common Prayer teaches us that, The Church carries out its mission through the ministry of all its members. That means every member is a minister. Each one discerns the ministry to which he or she is being called by God in a particular time and place. When God calls a person, God also generously provides the resources that are needed to serve in generous ways, working, praying, and giving for the spread of the kingdom. In the short time I have been at St. John s, I ve heard some say, It is difficult to get people involved. But I ve also seen how quickly and generously so many have stepped forward when invited to take an active role in the Church s life and ministry. I am banking on that observation to be the rule and not the exception in this vibrant parish! We have distributed brochures with the invitation, Get Involved. In the brochures, you will find brief descriptions of many of our committees and ministry groups, along with a response form you may use to indicate your interests. This brochure and response form are also available online. Take some time during the coming month to read the brochure. If you see a place of service that seems to be calling your name, ask God if it is a ministry in which you can be generous in service to Christ and his Church. If you believe God is calling you to serve in this way, indicate that on the response form and send it in. The vestry s discernment task force will be in touch. I ll see you in Church! Check out our website at for more information. 144 WAYS TO HELP THE YOUTH GROUP! 144 Envelopes is a youth fundraising event for camp. In Hansen Hall, there are envelopes numbered from and the Youth Group is asking that church members make a donation for the corresponding envelope number. All donations go toward Young Life Camp fees, which range from $500-$900 per person. The fundraiser ends June 14. KELLY RUBRECHT BENEFIT Join valley residents on Sunday, June 14, from 3:00-8:00 p.m. at Dornan's to support Kelly and Shelley Rubrecht in a fundraiser for Kelly's full-time care needs due to Parkinson's disease. There will be live music, food, and a silent auction, and 100% of the proceeds gathered by Community Resource Center will benefit the family. John's Staff Darrah Issacson and husband Ben welcomed their baby girl, Baylee Marie Isaacson (6lb 11oz and 19.5") on May 26! ǿǿthe Children's Learning Center teachers substituted so that Bright Beginnings teachers could attend Luke Lynch's memorial. ǿǿvicky and Amanda Macfarlane lead our enthusiastic youth choir. ǿǿthis week's office angels (Georgi Still, AnnaMae Kass, and Celia Wallace) helped our office thrive by doing administrative tasks. ǿǿkirsten Farney and Caroline Jolley helped organize this week's Cathedral Voices Sing Off. Today we meet in the basement of the Browse 'n Buy there are in excess of 20 meetings a week there, from 7 in the morning to 8 at night reaching a hundred or so people at any one point in time. This simple room is an iconic space. The words we hear, the relationships we develop, and the spiritual awakenings that arise have saved countless lives. For us alcoholics, this is a very special, life-changing place. The Second Tradition of Alcoholics Anonymous states: For our group purpose there is but one ultimate authority a loving God as He may express Himself in our group conscience, and Tradition Five says: Each group has but one primary purpose to carry its message to the alcoholic who still suffers. 4 THE SPIRITUAL HEARTS OF THE COMMUNITY The rich history of The Chapel of the Transfiguration and St. Hubert the Hunter So many visitors to our beautiful valley are here for recreation, but the Chapel of the Transfiguration in Grand Teton National Park and St. Hubert the Hunter in Bondurant offer two unique and inspiring locations for spiritual refreshment and retreat. In 1890, William D. Menor came to Jackson Hole and settled on the west bank of the Snake River. Here he operated a general store and ferry that transported people across the river. The store and ferry drew homesteaders and dudes alike, who were ordering supplies and crossing the river. In 1918, Maude Noble purchased the land from Menor and continued to operate the ferry until The area continued to draw dudes and the need for a place of worship, for the summer visitors and homesteaders grew and the idea of building a small chapel spread. The rustic Chapel of the Transfiguration was built in the summer of 1925, and the first Episcopal services were held on July 26 of that year. Prior to its construction, the nearest place of worship was in the town of Jackson. Today, that is just a short car ride away, but in the 1920 s roads were still rough and automobiles rare. Once fully constructed, the Chapel served as the spiritual heart of the area. Dude ranchers and tourists alike flocked to the chapel every Sunday to worship and gather as a community. Today, the Chapel still draws people and services are held every Sunday during the summer. The story of the native pine log church of St. Hubert the Hunter in Bondurant, Wyoming starts with a blizzard and a diamond. In 1937 when the Episcopal Bishop of Wyoming, The Rt. Rev. Bishop Winfred H. Ziegler, made a trip through Bondurant in mid-winter and found himself marooned during a blizzard. Some of the ranchers and families extended kindness and hospitality to him. Sometime later, Bishop Ziegler heard the story about a diamond from Bishop Perry, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, USA. This diamond, a cherished heirloom of Mrs. John Markoe, was given to Bishop Perry some years before her death, with the request that he sell the stone and build a memorial church with the proceeds. Bishop Ziegler immediately thought of Bondurant. Both bishops agreed that the community needed a church. That same week, Bishop Perry sold the diamond for $1,400. Bishop Ziegler returned to Wyoming seeking volunteers to build a church and community hall. In late March or early April 1939, with the snow still deep, a group of about 25 men, Bishop Ziegler and two other priests crossed the Hoback River and climbed the hill on the other side with a team and sled to get into the forest and cut the logs for the new church. In the fall of 1940, the first service was a wedding ceremony, with only five rounds of logs having been laid. In the spring of 1941, the ranchers resumed their work and completed the building.
