Prayer of Saint Charles Borromeo ALMIGHTY GOD, YOU HAVE GENEROUSLY MADE KNOWN TO US THE MYSTERIES OF YOUR LIFE THROUGH JESUS CHRIST YOUR SON IN THE HOLY SPIRIT. ENLIGHTEN MY MIND TO KNOW THESE MYSTERIES WHICH YOUR CHURCH TREASURES AND TEACHES. MOVE MY HEART TO LOVE THEM AND MY WILL TO LIVE IN ACCORD WITH THEM. GIVE ME THE ABILITY TO TEACH THE FAITH TO OTHERS WITHOUT PRIDE AND PERSONAL GAIN. LET ME REALIZE THAT I AM SIMPLY YOUR INSTRUMENT FOR BRINGING OTHERS TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE WONDERFUL THINGS YOU HAVE DONE FOR ALL YOUR CREATURES. HELP ME TO BE FAITHFUL TO THIS TASK THAT YOU HAVE ENTRUSTED TO ME. AMEN. SAINT CHARLES BORROMEO, PRAY FOR US.

Steps to Follow for a Successful Appeal 1. Show the video on Kickoff Weekend: November 5th and 6th. Every family should be asked to participate in the annual St. Charles Borromeo Seminary Appeal. Don t worry about a perfect presentation of the video. It is more important to highlight the importance of the Appeal by pausing to reflect on it. Even if your worship space does not create the most optimal viewing or listening environment, the importance of the Appeal is not lost. Post the video on your parish s homepage, or add a link to your website. Post the video on your Facebook page or Twitter. Ask for an increase in participation to help reach our goal of $3.5 million. 2. Personalize the message for parishioners. Reflect on the reasons why you, the Pastor, support the Appeal, and publicly comment on making your own gift. Discuss your own Seminary experience and how it prepared you for a life of priestly service. Highlight the various programs at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary and mention any parishioners, volunteers, or staff who have graduated or are currently enrolled at the Seminary. 3. Thank past contributors. This is a general Appeal that should have broad support throughout the Archdiocese; invite every family to make a gift and thank them for their past support. Invite the parishioners to joyfully share in every ministry of the local Church by giving a gift to share in all we do. Stress the importance of giving a gift of substance and sacrifice. 4. Keep the Appeal in front of the parishioners. Use the announcements, bulletin inserts, and other information provided. Post your Appeal progress toward your parish target in your bulletin (bi-weekly for several months, starting in mid-november). Mention the parish s progress periodically during announcements throughout the Appeal. Post updates, reminders, and other important information on your parish s website, Facebook page, and Twitter. 5. Lead the parish in prayer for the success of the Appeal. Incorporate the prayers of the faithful into the liturgy. Offer to keep the parishioners in your prayers as they consider making their gifts. Always ask the parishioners to reflect on the blessings they have been given and their call to stewardship in their consideration of their donation. Ask the parishioners to offer their prayers for the success of the Appeal and for all those who are able to minister because of the Appeal. 6
Case for Support Theme: For Today. For Tomorrow. For All of Us. Appeal Objectives The objectives of the St. Charles Borromeo Seminary Appeal are: To raise $3.5 million to help St. Charles Borromeo Seminary continue its necessary work in preparing priests, deacons, religious, and laity for service to our parishes, schools, and other Catholic organizations. To offer the faithful a more comprehensive view of the programs offered at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary. Program Overview St. Charles Borromeo Seminary remains one of the outstanding schools of sacred theology in the United States. In its desire to be of service to the Church, the Seminary placed the formation of young men discerning a call to life as a priest as a first priority. In more recent years, however, many seminaries have come to play a more comprehensive role in intellectual formation of all Catholics in their respective localities. St. Charles Borromeo Seminary embraces this dual role, as a hub of priestly formation and a center of intellectual life for all. It accomplishes this mission through its four divisions: College Seminary: The College Seminary is a four-year undergraduate program offering a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy. High school graduates or college transfers can complete a full baccalaureate program while also discerning a vocation to the Roman Catholic priesthood. The goal of the College Seminary is to provide students with the emotional, intellectual, and spiritual maturity necessary to follow the vocation to which they are called. Theological Seminary: The Theological Seminary prepares students for ordination to the Roman Catholic priesthood. The four-year graduate-level program offers completion of a Master of Divinity degree (M.Div.) and a Master of Arts degree (M.A.). Students come to a deeper understanding of themselves and their role in the world as a teacher, servant, and representative of Christ. The men are given the proper tools in preparation for their priestly life: prayer and spirituality, emotional understanding, proclamation of the word of God, and, most importantly, the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. School of Diaconal Formation: The School of Diaconal Formation provides an opportunity for mature men to train for ministry as a permanent deacon. These men receive intellectual formation leading in most cases to a Master of Arts in Theology. This training provides a foundation for the three primary charisms of a deacon: word, altar, and charity. School of Theological Studies: The School of Theological Studies provides an opportunity for the laity, interested in earning a Master of the Arts degree in Theology and other certifications, to do so in a manner that is authentic to the teachings of the Church and flexible for the modern world. Evening and weekend classes allow teachers, catechists, youth ministers, lectors, Church employees, and all Catholics to grow in their knowledge of the faith, so as to be more effective in their careers and vocations. The Seminary also hosts public lectures which highlight important topics in theology, philosophy, and public life. 7
Appeal Highlights Appeal Goal The financial goal of the St. Charles Borromeo Seminary Appeal is $3.5 million. Parish Targets In lieu of a specific goal, each parish will receive a target range of support based on their past giving history to the Seminary Appeal. Parish Leadership Pastor: The Pastor provides leadership, expertise, direction, and oversight to the Appeal, and is essential to the success of the annual Seminary Appeal at the parish. He introduces and endorses the video message during Preparation Weekend and instructs other celebrants to do the same. He also instructs and assures that the methods to conduct the campaign are fully implemented. Appeal Chairperson: Each Pastor should also appoint an Appeal Chairperson who can enthusiastically represent the Pastor and the parish during the St. Charles Borromeo Seminary Appeal and coordinate the activities of the Appeal. Depending on the size of the parish, the chairperson should recruit several parishioners to serve as members of the committee to assist in this outreach. The chairperson and committee is responsible for the following: Placing the pledge envelopes in the pews before Mass. Overseeing audio-visual equipment. Working with parish staff to ensure materials provided by The Catholic Foundation of Greater Philadelphia are utilized. Helping with follow-up: letter writing, calling past and potential donors, and getting updates on parish progress towards the targeted goal. 8
Appeal Highlights Materials The Catholic Foundation of Greater Philadelphia will provide the materials necessary to conduct a successful Appeal. 13 Kickoff Weekend Suggested Scripts November 5th and 6th Celebrant: Today we are going to watch a brief presentation about St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in preparation for this year s Seminary Appeal. PLAY THE VIDEO After showing the video, use the scripts below to further elaborate. If your parish IS hosting a Speaker: Celebrant: On (DATE), our parish will welcome (NAME OF SPEAKER). He/she is a seminarian/a diaconate candidate/a lay student/etc. He/she will share with us his/her personal experience at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary. After his/her talk, you will have an opportunity to pledge your support to St. Charles Borromeo Seminary. For those of you who may have never contributed, I invite you to make the effort to do so this year. For us to reach our goal and support those in formation at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, we need everyone to participate. If your parish is NOT hosting a speaker: Celebrant: As you have just seen, St. Charles Borromeo Seminary is vital to the life of our Archdiocese. St. Charles Borromeo Seminary provides dedicated priests, deacons, religious, and laity to serve in our parishes, schools, and other Catholic organizations. Your support is necessary to ensure these programs can be offered to the men and women responding to God s call to serve the Church. Next weekend, you will have an opportunity to pledge your support to St. Charles Borromeo Seminary. For those of you who may have never contributed, I invite you to make the effort to do so this year. For us to reach our goal and support those in formation at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, we need everyone to participate. 13
Suggested Prayers of the Faithful Kickoff Weekend For those currently studying for the priesthood and the diaconate at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, that, through our participation in this year s St. Charles Borromeo Seminary Appeal, they come to know our support during this period of discernment. We pray to the Lord. For all teachers, catechists, and volunteers enrolled in the School of Theological Studies, may the Lord continue to strengthen them as they prepare for service in the Church. We pray to the Lord. As we are called to support the St. Charles Borromeo Seminary Appeal through our financial generosity, may we continue to pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and religious life. We pray to the Lord. We pray that more individuals, like ourselves, will continue to respond to the Lord s call to share their gifts to support the work of our Church. We pray to the Lord. Speaker Weekend Through our increased awareness of the vital work of St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, may we come to a deeper understanding of the importance of our continued support. We pray to the Lord. That all the faithful of the Archdiocese will continue to support those who have responded yes to the Lord s call to serve the Church as priests, deacons, and religious. We pray to the Lord. That through our example of the faithful living out of their vocations, others will be inspired to heed the Lord s invitation to serve. We pray to the Lord. For the success of the St. Charles Borromeo Seminary Appeal, that the Seminary will continue to serve all the faithful for years to come. We pray to the Lord. Thank You Weekend That through our generosity, all those in formation at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary will be renewed in their commitment to serve the Church. We pray to the Lord. May we see the work of St. Charles Borromeo Seminary as vital to the life of our parish and Archdiocese. We pray to the Lord. That the Lord will bless all those who have and continue to support St. Charles Borromeo Seminary through their generosity of word, deed, and prayer. We pray to the Lord. Through our generous support of St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, may more be inspired to respond to the Lord s call to serve the Church. We pray to the Lord. 14
