1 K H P C (U.S.A.) SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 11, 2018 Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. Norman Maclean We Are Christ s Le er to the World! from 2 Corinthians 3
2 WELCOME TO KIRK IN THE HILLS Welcome to worship We are glad to have you with us today for worship. If this is your first visit to the Kirk, please introduce yourself to a pastor after worship. About today s service As we close our First Things First sermon series, we find ourselves peeking in on the healing of a man with leprosy. If you are willing, you can make me clean, the man says to Jesus. I am willing, Jesus says. Today we will consider the difference between willingness and willfulness. In order to embody our willingness to follow Jesus and affirm how he makes us clean, we will close today s service with the ritual act of Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows. Everyone will be invited to come forward, take a shell from the baptismal font, and receive the sign of the cross on their hands. Today s liturgy is from the Liturgy for the Affirmation of Baptismal Vows by the Church of Scotland. The following prayer invites us to prepare our hearts for worship and our lives for faithful living: Holy Spirit, who hovered over the waters at creation s birth, who descended in the form of a dove at Jesus baptism, who was poured out under the signs of fire and wind at Pentecost: Come to us, open our hearts and minds, so that we may hear the Word of Life and be renewed by your power, for you live and reign with the Father and the Son, now and forever. Amen. Book of Common Worship If you have children Childcare is available for infants and children up to age 2 from 8:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the nursery (Abbey 24). Please check children into the nursery before the service. Following the Word with the Children, children ages 3 through grade 12 will be dismissed for Sunday School. Worship Bags: Children are always welcome in worship! If you are worshiping with your child at the 11:00 a.m. service, please pick up a worship bag as you enter the sanctuary. Worship bags are updated weekly and designed to help children follow along in worship. If you need audio or visual assistance Hearing assistance units, large-print bulletins and hymnals are available upon request from an usher. If you are in need of prayer You may submit prayer requests online at kirkinthehills.org under Resources/Prayer Request. Stephen Ministers are available for personal, confidential prayer in Melrose Chapel after each worship service. Melrose Chapel is located on the left-hand side of the pulpit. Join us for fellowship and coffee We encourage worshipers to greet one another as they leave and assist visitors in finding their way to the coffee and fellowship in Heritage Hall after the 9:15 a.m. service and greet new members. Flowers on the Altar are presented to the glory of God in loving memory of Robert Gustafson, her wonderful husband, by his loving wife, Sheri Gustafson. Cover Art - Healing of the Lepers at Capernaum, , James Tissot, Public Domain This opaque watercolor over graphite reveals Jesus concern for the outcasts of society: in this case, those afflicted with leprosy, a chronic disease. The leper kneels in the center foreground of the image dramatically making his plea to Jesus with his bandaged arms upraised. Referring to ancient laws regarding the lepers, Tissot writes that the man occupies the center of the road to permit the healthy to pass with ease on either side of the path. And also with you! * CALL TO WORSHIP Joseph Ashoo (9:15 a.m.) In the old covenant, God chose Israel to be his people. He showed them his ways and gave them his laws. We stand within the new covenant made by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and we bear his name. In the strength of the covenant, which he has made with his people, and mindful of our shortcomings, let us bind ourselves anew to God who has so graciously bound himself to us. And let us gladly take the yoke of Christ upon us. * INTROIT Humphrey Clucas O Lord, open thou our lips. And our mouth shall show forth thy praise. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, And to the Holy Ghost. * Those who are able are invited to stand. 3

Renew the power of our baptismal cleansing and fill us with zeal for good deeds. Let us hear your voice once again that we may recognize in your beloved Son our hope of inheriting eternal life. Grant this through Jesus Christ, your Word made flesh, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, in the splendor of eternal light, God forever and ever. KYRIE ELEISON Silence is kept for personal confession. Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Herbert Sumsion ASSURANCE OF PARDON Hear the good news! In baptism you were buried with Christ. In baptism also you were raised to life with him, through faith in the power of God who raised Christ from the dead. Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old life has gone; a new life has begun. I declare to you in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. 4 Amen. If you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. * GLORIA PATRI Greatorex (Hymn 579) COMMUNITY ACCLAMATION Glory be to the Father, And to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, Is now, and ever shall be, World without end. Know ye that the Lord he is God: It is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves: We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: Be thankful unto him, and bless his Name. For the Lord is good, his mercy is everlasting; And his truth endureth to all generations. Amen. * DOXOLOGY Old Hundredth Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him, above ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. SERMON First Things First: The Merge Dr. N. Phillips THE SENDING * PROFESSION OF FAITH: THE APOSTLES CREED Do you believe in God the Father almighty? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. 6
7 Do you believe in Jesus Christ? I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. * COMMITMENT TO THE CHRISTIAN LIFE As a disciple of Christ, will you continue in the Apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and in prayer? With the help of God, I will. Will you proclaim the good news by word and deed, serving Christ in all people? With the help of God, I will. Will you work for justice and peace, honoring God in all creation? With the help of God, I will. This is the task of the Church. This is our task; to live and work for the kingdom of God. God has made us one in Christ. He has set his seal upon us and, as a pledge of what is to come, has given the Spirit to dwell in our hearts. PRAYER OVER THE WATER At this time we invite you to come forward to the font in procession. Ushers will invite those seated in the pews at the rear of the sanctuary to begin the procession. For those unable to process forward, stay seated and a pastor will bring the baptismal water to you. You are invited to take a shell from the font as a reminder of your baptismal vows and then present the palm of your hand to a pastor to receive a blessing and the sign of the cross. 9 About today s hymns God Is Here was wri en by the Rev. Fred Pra Green in 1979 at the request of University United Methodist Church, Austin, Texas, for a hymn to be sung at the closing service of an eight-month long festival centering around the themes of worship, music and the arts. Pra Green was an English Methodist clergyperson during the twentieth century who, upon his retirement, became a prolific hymn writer. The tune Abbot s Leigh was composed by the Rev. Cyril Taylor on a Sunday morning during the spring of Taylor was working in the wartime headquarters of the religious broadcasting department of the BBC located in the village of Abbot s Leigh. Baptized in Water was wri en by Michael Saward, a twentieth century British Anglican priest and author of over one hundred hymns. The tune is a Gaelic melody and is named after a small village on the Isle of Mull, Scotland. O Christ, the Great Foundation was wri en by Timothy T ingfang Lew, a leading Chinese educator who also represented China in the World Council of Churches and was a member of the Chinese government s legislative body prior to the Communist takeover. About today s choral music You Shall Have a Song - the text of this anthem is based on Isaiah 30:29 and Psalm 100. Harriet Ziegenhals was a graduate of the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, where she served on the faculty, and received her Master of Sacred Music from Union Theological Seminary, New York City. As a singer she sang for eighteen years under Robert Shaw in New York City and Cleveland. In 1970 she founded the Community Renewal Chorus in Chicago, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting and celebrating diversity, equality, peace, and justice through music. She was active in Chicago s musical life for over 40 years. She passed away in North Carolina this past January at the age of 90. Clap Happy Psalm is a se ing of a text based on Psalm 96. The tune is an American folk melody. Beautiful Savior is an arrangement of folksong from Silesia, a region in central Europe now mostly in Poland, with smaller parts in the Czech Republic and Germany. The original German form of the text first appeared in a manuscript from Münster, Germany. This anthem is closely associated with the St. Olaf Choir of St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota, so much so that it is regarded, though perhaps unofficially, as the college s alma mater. This arrangement is by F. Melius Christiansen, the leading choral conductor in the Lutheran tradition of his time and the founding director of the St. Olaf Choir. Throughout the course of his celebrated tenure from 1912 to 1944 as the choir s conductor he established a world-wide reputation for its high standards and purity of sound, a standard that continues to this day. Jubilate Deo is a se ing of a metrical paraphrase of Psalm 100. William Mathias was a prolific twentieth century Welsh composer whose works ranged from music for worship to orchestral and chamber music. His works are, as is the case with this anthem, characterized by rhythmic vibrancy as well as tuneful yet angular melodies. Sicit Cervus is likely the best known of Palestrina s motets. Palestrina was one of the foremost composers of church music during the sixteenth century; his works are regarded as the culmination and ideal of Renaissance polyphony. God Be in My Head - the text of this anthem comes from the Sarum Primer (1514), one of many collections of devotional readings and prayers for use by the laity which were prevalent from the thirteenth through the sixteenth centuries. Philip Wilby taught various composition, liturgy, directing and score reading classes as a member of the music department of Leeds University beginning in
