1 K H P C (U.S.A.) TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 22, 2017 The great lesson from the true mystics is that the sacred is in the ordinary, that it is to be found in one s daily life, in one s neighbors, friends, and family, in one s back yard. Abraham Maslow A Christ-centered Community Called to Deepen Faith, Serve Others and Foster Fellowship
2 Welcome to worship 2 WELCOME TO KIRK IN THE HILLS We are glad to have you with us today for worship. If this is your first visit to the Kirk, please introduce yourself to a pastor after worship. About today s service Today s service explores what it means to be God s people. What does it mean to be called out of darkness to be God s chosen people, royal priesthood, holy nation, set apart for God? And what does God s glory look like? Sometimes, God s glory is found in most mundane places in least expected ways. As we seek different ways of being a community belonging to God, may we experience God breaking into the narrative of our lives in powerful and glorious ways this Sunday! The following prayer invites us to prepare our hearts for worship and our lives for faithful living: Lord Christ, at times we are like strangers on this earth, taken aback by all the violence, the harsh oppositions. Like a gentle breeze, you breathe upon us the Spirit of peace. Transfigure the deserts of our doubts, and so prepare us to be bearers of reconciliation wherever you place us, until the day when a hope of peace dawns in our world. Amen Brother Roger of Taizè If you have children Childcare is available for infants and children up to age 2 from 8:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the nursery (Abbey 24). Please check children into the nursery before the service. During our 9:15 a.m. worship hour, children ages 3 and 4 may be checked into Abbey 22 before the service. Following the Word with the Children, children ages 4 through grade 12 will be dismissed for Sunday School. Worship Bags: Children are always welcome in worship! If you are worshipping with your child at the 11:00 a.m. service, please pick up a worship bag as you enter the sanctuary. Worship bags are updated weekly and designed to help children follow along in worship. If you need audio or visual assistance Hearing assistance units, large-print bulletins and hymnals are available upon request from an usher. If you are in need of prayer You may submit prayer requests online at kirkinthehills.org under Resources/Prayer Request. Stephen Ministers are available for personal, confidential prayer in Melrose Chapel after each worship service. Melrose Chapel is located on the left-hand side of the pulpit. Join us for fellowship and coffee We encourage worshippers to greet one another as they leave and assist visitors in finding their way to the coffee and fellowship in Heritage Hall. The flowers on the altar are presented to the glory of God in loving memory of Lisa Marquardt by her mother, Diana Marquardt and Uncle, Jerry Craig. The flowers in Cedarholm chapel are presented to the glory of God in loving memory of Doris (Dee) Heinzerling by her daughter, Lynn, grandson, Christopher, and son-in-law, Terry Stinson. Cover Art - Moses in the Cleft of the Rock, Phillip Presco Parham, Growing up in Tennessee, Parham says he was born an artist; yet, before graduating with a masters in fine arts from Yale University, as a ʺstarving artistʺ, he went door to door selling Bibles. With success in sales, he became involved in the financial market. This painting was his first when he returned to art after a 15- year career as a stockbroker in New York and San Francisco. With plans to transform the art world with radical, contemporary visions of the Old Testament, he refers to his large-scale contemporary works as Sacred Revivalism. Here he tells the story of when Moses was allowed to look through the cloud of his insecurities, caught a glimpse of eternity, saw the glory of God, and was changed forever. Used with permission.
3 THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY 9:15 & 11:00 a.m., Sanctuary Moses said, Show me your glory, I pray. 7 CHARGE AND BENEDICTION Please take your seats as the pastor gives the congregation a charge to live the life of faith and then speaks words of Godʹs blessing on all gathered. CLOSING VOLUNTARY Choral Song Samuel Sebastian Wesley We hope that you experience a strong sense of welcome and home this morning! We invite everyone to offer greetings and peace at the close of the service. We hope that you will make a special effort to reach out in friendship to those you have yet to meet. If you are new to the Kirk, we hope you will visit us at one of our Connect stations in the Narthex, Abbey Lounge, Welcome Center or Heritage Hall. About today s hymns Holy, Holy, Holy is based on Revelation 4:8-11 and also expounds upon the Nicene Creed (page 15 in the hymnal). The tune also takes its name from the Nicene Creed and the Council of Nicaea. Great Is Thy Faithfulness is based on Lamentations 3:22-23, and was wri en by Thomas Obediah Chisholm. Ordained to the Methodist ministry at the age of 36, ill health prevented him from serving in full-time parish ministry. While his career then was in the insurance business, his religious vocation manifested itself through writing more than twelve hundred sacred poems. Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise was wri en by Walter Chalmers Smith, a pastor in the Free Church of Scotland during the nineteenth century. The opening line of this hymn was inspired by the three divine a ributes listed in I Timothy 1:17. The tune is a Welsh folk melody. About today s choral music Prayer Litany Helen Kemp This anthem is a se ing of texts by St. Francis of Assisi and St. Richard of Chichester, and was commissioned by the Presbyterian Association of Musicians 1996 Conference on Worship and Music at Montreat, North Carolina, a conference which is held annually in the summer. Helen Kemp was the leading figure in children s choirs from the middle of the twentieth century through the early decades of the present century, and was guest clinician for children s choirs at the 1996 conference, having served as a clinician there many times over the years. The Best of Rooms Randall Thompson This poem is by Robert Herrick, and was originally titled, Christ s Part. Herrick was a seventeenth century English poet and cleric. Randall Thompson was a prominent American choral composer during the twentieth century, and served on the faculties of the Curtis Institute of Music (Philadelphia), the University of Virginia and Harvard University. His best-known choral work is Alleluia, which he composed for the opening of the Berkshire Music Center, Tanglewood, and which our choir sings on Easter Day. Thompson composed The Best of Rooms in 1963; it is very similar in style to his Alleluia, starting simply and building to a great climax before diminishing to pianissimo. Laudate Dominum Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart This anthem is a se ing of Psalm 117, and comes from a larger, six movement work titled Solemn Vespers which Mozart composed in 1779 when he was twenty three years old at the request of the archbishop of the cathedral in Salzburg, Austria for Vespers, the evening prayer service of the Church. The structure of this service dates from the second century, and is actually, next to the Eucharist, the oldest liturgy of the Church. The service includes five psalms (Psalms 110, 111, 112, 113 and 117) as well as the Song of Mary (the Magnificat, Luke 1: 46-55). Psalm 117 celebrates the eternal mercies of God, and is the shortest of all the Psalms, consisting of only two verses. 7
