2 WELCOME TO KIRK IN THE HILLS Welcome to worship We are glad to have you with us today for worship. If this is your first visit to the Kirk, please introduce yourself to a pastor after worship. About today s service Today we remember the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation. In 1517, Martin Luther nailed 95 Theses to the Castle Church door in Wi enberg, Germany. He wrote, in large part, to dispute the power of indulgences paid to the Catholic Church. We, like Luther, believe that you are saved by works. But not yours. Jesus did more than die for you. He lived for you. Salvation is not merely the forgiveness of sins. It is the gift of righteousness, received by faith. This Good News is the focus of the Scriptures. You do nothing. God works. And His works are very good. Your good works are done in response to salvation. Justification by grace through faith does not mean good works are bad, but puts them in their proper role. We live according to God s will out of thankfulness to His love. The following prayer invites us to prepare our hearts for worship and our lives for faithful living: I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please you. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen. About today s hymns I Greet Thee Who My Sure Redeemer Art first appeared in the French Psalter published in 1545 under the leadership of John Calvin. Calvin was the leading theologian of the early Reformed theological tradition, of which the Presbyterian Church is a part. His Institutes of the Christian Religion is one of the most important theological works ever wri en. This hymn was translated by Elizabeth Smith, daughter of the president of Dartmouth University and wife of a professor at New York s Union Theological Seminary. The tune is adapted from the tune in the Genevan Psalter for Psalm 124. A Mighty Fortress Is Our God is a paraphrase by Martin Luther of Psalm 46, and is his most wellknown hymn. There is no doubt that this hymn is one of the great hymns to come out of the Reformation. In its earliest printings this text is labeled simply as The 46 th Psalm. The tune was composed by Luther for this text, though it may have been an adaptation of a Gregorian plainsong melody. Se ings of this tune comprise today s opening voluntaries. About today s choral music Sing Unto the Lord John Erikson The first phrase of each stanza of this simple children s song presents textually a short Psalm verse, followed by three phrases which are the same for each of the three stanzas, a common and practical way to help children remember tunes, words and their meaning. John Erickson wrote many sacred songs for children and had a distinguished career as a church musician, and is presently living in retirement in McKinney, Texas. Be Thou My Vision arr. Alice Parker This anthem is a se ing of a translation of an Irish hymn which dates from the 10th or the 11th century. The text belongs to a special category known as a lorica, a Latin word meaning armor or breastplate. Such prayers were understood to be an incantation of divine protection, not only in times of ba le but also in daily life. This anthem is an arrangement of the hymn tune Slane, which is an ancient Irish ballad. The tune is named after the hill Slane, which is located near Tara, Ireland and is where St. Patrick lit the first fires of Easter as a challenge to the king. Ein feste Burg Hans Leo Hassler This anthem uses both as its primary melodic material and its text Luther s great hymn. Hassler was a late sixteenth/early seventeenth German Lutheran composer, approximately two generations after Martin Luther, and is considered to be one of the most important German composers of all time, bridging between the Renaissance and the early Baroque eras. He studied in Italy, and because of this through him Italian compositional styles became incorporated into German sacred music. One of these styles is clearly evident in this anthem, that being separating out and presenting the various thematic motives of a long tune individually in each of the various voice parts (soprano, alto, tenor and bass) in imitative dialogue and musical conversation. This anthem is being sung in its original language (German) as the sentence structure, the declamation of individual words and syllables and even vowel and consonant colors are intrinsic to the melodic shapes and rhythms chosen by Hassler in conveying his musical interpretation of this hymn. 7
