DAVID Earlier this month a Roman Catholic priest from Pilson, Kansas, Chaplain (Captain) Emil J. Kapaun, was awarded posthumously the Medal of Honor. Father Kapaun joins twenty-eight other Kansans who have received our Nation s highest honor. He was born just three miles southwest of Pilson, Kansas; was ordained to the priesthood in 1940 and appointed to serve in the Pilson- Herington, Kansas area. He became an Army chaplain in 1944 and following a two year break in service after World War II, he returned to the Army in 1948 leaving Pilson, Kansas for the last time in Chaplain Kapaun entered Korea one month after the North invaded the South. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary heroism, patriotism, and selfless service from 1-2 November 1950 while serving with the 3d Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division during combat operations at Unsan, Korea and then as a prisoner of war until his death on 23 May 1951 when he was buried in a mass grave near the Yalu River. Chaplain Kapaun has been called a shepherd in combat boots. His fellow soldiers called him a saint and their own blessing from God. Father Kapaun s humility and Kansas values shrugged off those accolades. Even before he was a hero, he was one of the countless quiet heroes who live out their values of honesty and hard work like so many in this part of the country. We never know when the quiet heroes among us will be called to give their all. Most of our quiet heroes go unnamed and unknown to most, but to those they rescue and save they are a blessing. Father Kapaun s persona is reflected in each who quietly embodies Christ in daily life. Following the presentation of the Medal of Honor on 11 April 2013, Chief of Chaplains (Major General) Rutherford offered this prayer: Lord, God.Let us follow Chaplain Kapaun s example and hold fast to that which is good; render to no person evil for evil; strengthen the faint-hearted. 3 GARDEN PROJECT Julia Adams is coordinating the planting of the parish garden again this year. She will be planting flowers for the altar along with tomatoes, green beans, peas, corn, squash, and watermelon. The produce from the garden will be given to the Open Door and any parishioner is welcome to take some as well. Julia asks for anyone that would like to help or enjoys gardening to sign up on the calendar in Guild Hall. You can sign up for the times that you would like to contribute to the garden project. She will need help with planting, watering, weeding, etc. Donations to help with purchases of supplies is also needed. 4 Worship Ministry Team Report for May 2013 The Worship Ministry Team met in January and March of Following is a list of accomplishments and of ideas/items the worship team is still considering or developing. Accomplishments Conducted an exhaustive search for an organist to replace Ramona Printz-Smith who retired after many years of extraordinary service. This search resulted in the hiring of Stephen Kucera, who will serve Church of the Covenant February through May of Contributed to the planning of the following services o Ash Wednesday noon and 6:30 services on February 13 o Food for the Poor March 10 o Palm Sunday March 24 o Maundy Thursday March 28 o Good Friday March 29 o Easter Sunday March 31 Collaborated with the Hospitality Ministry Team to plan the Seder Dinner and the Maundy Thursday Holy Eucharist Service Under Consideration/Development Developing a summer schedule for substitute organists Establishing an organist schedule for Stephen Kucera beginning in late August or early September Respectfully submitted, Members of the Worship Ministry Team Sally Edwards, Debbie Fegan, Fr. Standing on the crossroads deciding which way to go toward. To the left is my way and to the right is to the Lord. My way means humans who are just as imperfect as me. The Lord's way means perfection will walk beside me and be a friend in need. My way is like a boat that doesn't have an oar. The Lord's way is like an eagle that was made to soar. It is true that with my way a false sense of freedom could seem strong. Whereas the Lord's way might take work and the road may seem long. Eventually though the illusion of freedom would end and I would be destitute and all alone. But the Lord's way means I would have a friend to take my hand and lead me home. I notice that even with all my possessions my life would always get unfurled. So I reached for the treasures of Heaven and not those of the world. I know I made the right choice as I turned right onto the road. For it was at that instant I felt the Lord take my hand and release my load. By Jeff Norberg 4

5 Anti-racism workshop scheduled for May 18 A workshop designed to help people explore issues of racism in society and themselves will take place on Saturday, May 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Bethany Place Conference Center, 835 SW Polk, in Topeka. The cost to attend is $20 per person, and lunch is included. Dillon s and Hy-Vee Cards Don t forget to purchase your Dillon s or Hy-Vee cards every Sunday. The outreach committee uses the proceeds from the Dillon s card program to reach out to kids who have needs through the homeless program at USD 475. This includes food and medications needed while they are in transition. By action of General Convention, this training is required for everyone in leadership positions throughout the Episcopal Church, all clergy, those employed by the church, and those elected or appointed to any church office. Mega Camp returns for 2013 June 2-8, 2013 What activities and programs are offered Camp Wood features a variety of activities such as horseback riding, climbing tower, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, arts and crafts, and sports. The Episcopal staff also provides solid Christian education, featuring worship, music, small group discussions, and prayer. Who should come to Summer Camp? Students in grades 3-12 for school year The Summer Camp program is NOT restricted to Episcopalians or regular churchgoers. All are welcome, so feel free to invite friends and family. How to register? Registration packets are in the office or can be download from Deadline to register is May 10, Camp Wood is a YMCA Camp located in Elmdale, KS in the scenic Flint Hills southwest of Emporia.
