3 Page 3 He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said. (Matthew 28:6) Mary Magdalene and the other Mary watched in horror as the lifeless body of Jesus was taken down from the cross late Friday afternoon. The disciples ran and hid, but the women stayed near Jesus. They went with Joseph of Arimathea to the tomb. They wanted to see where Jesus would be buried. Joseph wrapped the body in clean linen and placed it in the tomb. With everything in place he rolled the stone in front of the tomb and left. The women observed all this and wept. Jesus had meant so much to them. We live in a Good Friday world, where it so often seems that sin and evil, suffering and death are the things that have the last word. We can t deny these things happen, and we can t deny the pain and the grief and the hurt. But at the same time, Easter also happened. Our faith holds both death and resurrection together. We confess the sin and evil and suffering and death in this world, but we also confess the grace of God and the gift of eternal life. We live in a world that is marked by crosses of sin, evil, suffering, death and yet we see the outlines of grace and we do not surrender hope. The angel said, He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said and indeed, he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him. (Matthew 28:6-7) It was then that they remembered Jesus teachings that on the third day, he would be raised. He died on Friday and now it was Sunday the third day. They believed that God had raised Jesus to new life just as Jesus said would happen. Death had been defeated. The women were no longer afraid. And they hurried from the graveyard to tell the disciples that Jesus is alive! As they were hurrying out of the cemetery, they ran into the risen Lord Jesus. He said, Greetings! It was the happiest reunion anyone could imagine. The women fell at his feet and worshipped him. Jesus told them, "Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me." (Mt 28:10) And that is what our risen Lord says to us, here today, as well. Go to Galilee, which means, go to where Jesus is in his words that he has spoken to us written down by his apostles. Go to where Jesus is wherever two or three are gathered in his name. Go to where Jesus is at his table sharing his bread and wine. These are Galilee for us, the places where we will see him. Easter is not something that just happened in the past; it is a present reality when we experience the risen Christ in our own lives. Let us go to where he is in his word, in worship, at his table not just on Easter Sunday, but in the days and weeks and months ahead. We have his promise we will meet the risen Christ. Death has been defeated. Jesus is alive! Peace Pastor John Omans

9 Page 9 Christ-like compassion If I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another s feet. (John 13:14) I have called you friends, is our stewardship emphasis for this year. We are stewards, which means that we are care-takers, of Jesus gifts, Jesus mission, and Jesus church. What do you recall about Jesus showing compassion to others? The generosity of spirit that Jesus shows to his disciples is also reflected in his love for people he did not know as well, people who at first glance might make others feel uncomfortable. 1. How can we live as Jesus did in this regard? 2. How is compassion demonstrated in the life of our congregation? How is it demonstrated to: church attenders? neighbors who do not have a church home? people who are just passing through? Many of us first experience Christ s compassionate love through a relationship with another person. That person s love for us is an echo of the more profound love and mercy and compassion extended to us from the cross. Christ s love, given to us, is a gift that our Lord asks us in turn to offer to people who are alienated from God. Jesus asks us to echo his more profound love and mercy and compassion. Our compassion for people who are spiritually lost should also extend to those who need food, shelter, or bandages for wounds physical and emotional wounds whether they are Christians or strangers to the faith. Jesus calls us to echo the forgiveness and compassion we ourselves have received. Peace, Pastor John Omans
