4 Page 4 Do not be alarmed This is but the beginning of the birth pangs. (Mark 13:8) In chapter 13 of Mark s gospel, Jesus sketches out several threats. Some of the dangers are associated with a singular disaster that was looming upon them: the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. It happened in 70 A.D. Others are ongoing dangers: persecution of his followers, and the rise of false leaders and prophets within the community of faith itself. And of course there is the turmoil that intensifies as the end itself approaches: Nation against nation kingdom against kingdom earthquakes famines (Mark 13:8) The powers of evil, sin, darkness, and the devil, will do their best to oppose Jesus victory and his new creation. What amazes me is that Jesus is so matter-of-fact. These things will happen. Jesus doesn't pretend we, as Christians, will be immune. He doesn't assign blame or complain about the terrible things happening in his town. He simply reminds his followers: Keep awake (Mark 13:37), which means, put your faith to work. As we read in the book of Hebrews, Challenge one another to love and good deeds meet together encourage one another. (Heb 10:24-25) In fact, Jesus sees in this turmoil not a pointless and terrifying descent into chaos, but instead he says, "This is but the beginning of the birth pangs"(v. 8). With these simple words, Jesus puts the entire discussion in a new framework. Jesus says, This must take place. (Mark 13:7) That little word must speaks of God s decision, God s plan for the salvation of his broken world. What a remarkable truth that is for us Christians who are so anxious about the future! God knows what terrible dangers loom over his broken world. How easy it is to believe that God doesn't care or can't act. How astonishing it is to hear Jesus tell us: This must happen. Do not be alarmed. These are birth pangs, not just death throes; this is not the end, but the beginning of a new creation! Now we must be careful here, because the last thing we want to say is that God wills bloodshed, mayhem, and disaster. God isn't a sadist. God does not cause suffering, and yet God redeems it, God uses the suffering. Consider the cross, the awful, torturous, evil event of hatred and violence. God took what otherwise would be deemed utter disaster, utter evil, utter sinfulness and fashioned it into the crucible in which his Son forged our salvation. And, because of that, and on the strength of that great and terrible act, God now takes what is horrible, God-despising, and death-dealing in our lives and communities and world and fashions these things into the birth pangs of his new creation. That s the good news of the gospel. That is what Jesus invites us to see and to believe and to trust. Because of Jesus, who took on human flesh and became one of us and by his resurrection has become the first born of a new creation, we are assured that the turmoil, the troubles, disasters, and even the death that we face will not have the final say in our lives; Jesus will have the final say. And so, we grieve, yet not without hope; we face the worst the world throws at us and yet we need not give in to hopeless despair. Jesus invites us to trust that there is a new creation that will be born in this world and in us. And Jesus invites us to see that the turmoil we experience is but the beginning of the birth pangs. Peace Pastor John Omans

But you have always come through. You are a giving people. This church is blessed to have you. I am blessed to have you. 2) Thank you for serving. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on. Women s offerings: a brief history The idea of collecting donations in small offering boxes goes back to the very early 1800s, when women formed mite or cent societies to raise money. Mite boxes were given out as fundraising tools to collect pennies for the support of church projects and foreign missionaries. These women-led cent societies, platforms for social activism as well as evangelism in the 19th century, published their own literature, Bible studies and other materials advocating around issues such as child labor, literacy and prison reform. In time, larger missionary and ladies aid societies were developed, acknowledged and generally welcomed by their congregations. What was the reason behind the creation? Funds were needed to missionary and ladies aid societies developed out of this work because there was such an overwhelming demand not only for foreign missionary support but for support at home. These women s groups funded needs in their local churches as well as local community projects. Their capacity for fundraising financially support two young women who wanted to be foreign missionaries but were denied funding by the Board of Missions. A national women s structure was born!
