1 The Newsletter of Saint Mark s Parish November G E T S E T... G O!! Season Of Gratitude The Season of Gratitude at Saint Mark s is indeed rich. Already we have heard inspiring testimonials of gratitude from Pere Wisnel de Jardin, Betty Butler, and Nathan Schroeder and there is much more to come as we hear from Bruce Linsenmayer and Gini Berry. Roberta Goodman is providing us with The Joy of Giving meditations, and Philip Molebash and others are leading our Sunday 9:00 a.m. education hour focusing on the season s Gospel readings. I hope everyone has marked November 17, Consecration Sunday, on their calendar. This is sure to be a rousing day as we culminate our Season of Gratitude with Rabbi Marvin Gross, our guest preacher. He is the Executive Director of Union Station Homeless Services in Pasadena for which we provide lunches for men and women on 5 th Sundays. There is only one service that day at 10:00 a.m., and it will be followed by a fabulous Celebration Brunch. Our whole parish community, young and old alike, are welcome and encouraged to be present at both events that morning. Reservation cards will be handed out at our services so you can let us know that you plan to attend Consecration Sunday Worship and our Celebration Brunch. As we reflect on all the gifts that God has bestowed upon us, let us respond by embracing and sharing those gifts in all ways. Encourage one another to voice gratitude and to practice generosity. As we move through this season, and as we prepare to commit our gifts to God, I invite you to reflect on Acts 2:44-47: All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need they ate their food together with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all people. Marti Farley Stewardship Chair
2 FROM THE RECTOR Thank you is not enough. Pere Wisnel de Jardin said these words to us as he began his sermon here on the first Sunday of our Season of Gratitude. Expressing his gratitude for the welcome he and Marjorie received from the Saint Mark s Community, he longed to do more for us in return for the joy and hope they would carry home with them. I tried, both from the lectern and privately on the way to LAX Monday morning, to assure him that their presence and friendship with us had already blessed us beyond our wildest imaginings. I was the one who couldn t say Thank You enough. We spend six weeks each year practicing gratitude. Saying thank you with our lips is a good start; thank you to God for all we ve been given. In our Litany of Gratitude prayed each Sunday in this Season, we give thanks for gifts to give. After Marjorie and Pere Wisnel s visit, we know far better than we did before it that we truly do have everything. God has blessed us with gifts to give. We have the extraordinary ability to give thanks not only with our lips, but with our lives, with our hearts, with our talents, and with our treasure. Over the course of just two days, this community said thank you to God and to our friends from Haiti by raising more than $25, so that the children of Ste. Marguerite School can eat lunch for another year, and the teachers who love them can be assured of receiving wages for their work. I want to thank YOU for being generous with your gratitude, and with your resources. This church is richly blessed. And we are poised to be a blessing in even bigger, bolder ways. Through the rest of the Season, and especially on Consecration Sunday, we will be invited to say a grand THANK YOU to God, with our voices in song and prayer, and by the committing of our treasure for God s work through Saint Mark s in the year ahead. Our Called To Be More strategic plan, created by our community through the inspiration of God s Spirit, will take us forward into more faithful partnership with God in life-giving work for the good of our community, and well beyond it. If you haven t done so already, please go to our website and take some time to read this powerful statement of the faith of our church. To realize the new life to which it calls us, greater giving of time, of talent and of treasure will be required of us. I encourage us to pray and to consider what our boldest Thank You will look like this year? How might each of us be called to greater gratitude, to more fearless giving of our time and treasure and talent? We cannot say Thank You enough. But God will honor and cherish every leap of faith, every form of Thank You. Faithfully, Pr. Carri

5 All Saints Sunday Sunday, November 3rd is All Saints Sunday. In anticipation and celebration of this feast day, all are invited, young, old and in-between, to gather in the on Saturday morning, November 2 from 10:00 2:00 for the making of cross collages in memory of those who have died in the past year. If you have lost a loved one this year, you are especially invited. Pastor Carri, our Rector, will be on hand with foam-core crosses, glue sticks, scissors and magazines. Feel free to bring your own photographs or other materials to create a cross collage in honor of the deceased. At our All Saints celebration on Sunday morning, we ll process our crosses and display them at the front of the church as a reminder of the great cloud of witnesses surrounding and supporting us. Children Youth and Family Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, 12 (New Living Translation) Scripture teaches us about the value of relationships; Jesus himself models the importance of living and working in community with others. At its very core, ministry is relational and nowhere is that more evident than in the ministry of children and youth. Recently, the Saint Mark s Youth Group, hosted the first Second Sunday event for youth group members, parents and siblings. Almost 80 people gathered in the for dinner followed by program designed for specific age groups. Youth group members enjoyed an extended conversation with Pere Wisnel and Marjorie de Jardin, their siblings had fun hanging out with Stephen Rosebrook, and the parents got to play a few traditional youth group games with Maria and Lisa. Our next Second Sunday event is scheduled for November 10. Our Sunday School just keeps on growing! We have three classes each week, led by our incredible teachers Heather Jolly, Kathy Talton-Wilson, Mary Herman, Diana Schroeder and Jennifer Molebash. If you ve been thinking about Sunday School for your children (preschool through grade 6), now is the time to give it a try! Thank you! We are so fortunate to be a church that truly encourages the ministry of children and youth. For more information on these or any other CYF programs, contact Maria Horner (maria@catalinaislandcamps.com or ). With Gratitude On behalf of City of Hope and Troop 1, I d like to express my gratitude to the Saint Mark s community for your generous support of the Andrew Blackwood Memorial Blood Drive. This year s effort recorded 94 scheduled respondents, of whom 86 walked through the door. These respondents plus a number of unscheduled walk-in donors resulted in 74 pints of blood delivered to the City of Hope patients, a new record high for this event. This City of Hope Blood Services Coordinator informed me that this blood drive continues to be the most productive annual event in their calendar. Thank you again in your enthusiastic response to this effort and for your continuing support of Troop1. I d like to thank the Bass family for soliciting many of the donors from the Saint Mark s family. Again, please accept my thanks and kindly put this event on your calendars for the second Sunday in October, Alan Yovanovich Scout Master ACTS Thanksgiving Service Sunday November 24, 7:00 p.m. Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center 1434 N.
