2 IRMOS Summary IRMOS main bjective is t enable realtime interactin between peple and applicatins ver a Service Oriented Infrastructure, where prcessing, strage and netwrking needs t be cmbined and delivered with guaranteed levels f service. IRMOS (Interactive Realtime Multimedia applicatins On Service riented infrastructures) was apprved by the Eurpean Cmmissin under the Seventh Framewrk Prgramme fr Research and Develpment Crdinated by Xyratex Ltd. (XY) and technically managed by the Institute f Cmmunicatin & Cmputer Systems Natinal Technical University f Athens (ICCS/NTUA), its main bjective is t enable realtime interactin between peple and applicatins ver a Service Oriented Infrastructure, where prcessing, strage and netwrking needs t be cmbined and delivered with guaranteed levels f service. IRMOS will run fr three years (starting n the 1st f February 2008) and has an verall budget f 12.9 Millin Eur. In ttal 11 partners frm all ver Eurpe are invlved in this prject. Why IRMOS Tday s Service Oriented Infrastructures (SOIs) are inadequate fr the rapid grwth and prvisin f many interactive real-time applicatins. Sft real-time applicatins are traditinally develped withut any real-time methdlgy r run-time supprt frm the infrastructure n which they run. The result is that either expensive and dedicated hardware has t be purchased t ensure gd interactivity levels and perfrmance, r that general-purpse resurces are used as a cmprmise (e.g. cmmdity perating systems and Internet netwrking) with n way t guarantee r cntrl the behaviur f the applicatin as a result. IRMOS aims t break this muld by enabling sft real-time applicatins t be delivered thrugh value chains that span rganisatinal bundaries by a service riented infrastructure that enables the real time interactin f a distributed set f peple and resurces. What makes IRMOS unique IRMOS is set apart frm SOI thrugh a set f key features. IRMOS will prvide a Real-time Framewrk as a single infrastructure with real-time attributes at all levels (netwrk, prcessing, strage, applicatin, wrkflw and business) and prvisin f Quality f Service Guarantees. Furthermre, while this infrastructure is cnsidered t be Crss- Organisatinal, allwing the distributin f interactive real-time applicatins, it prvides at the same time Inter-rganisatin Cnfidence by giving all participants in inter-rganisatin value chains the cnfidence that interactive real-time applicatins will be delivered in a predictable, reliable and efficient way. The afrementined framewrk als allws Business Prcesses Autmatin by prviding services that enable the quick and efficient assembly f businesses withut the need fr prtracted manual negtiatins r service prvisining by using the IRMOS services. 3 IRMOS scenaris IRMOS results will be independent frm applicatins but, nnetheless, they will be validated thrugh three different applicatin scenaris: Digital Film Pstprductin, Virtual and Augmented Reality and Interactive Real-time elearning. IRMOS Participants The IRMOS cnsrtium has been cnstituted by a grup f academia and research centers, equipment manufacturers, internatinal enterprises and users ffering wide expertise and technical excellence f wrking cperatively. The cnsrtium cnsists f 11 partners belnging t 6 Eurpean cuntries (DE, UK, GR, IT, NO, ES). IRMOS Newsletter Issue N 1 3

4 External Presence The IRMOS prject has cntributed t ETSI TC Grid with 13 cntributins during its first seven mnths. IRMOS in Standardizatin: ETSI Technical Cmmittee Grid The ETSI Technical Cmmittee Grid was apprved during the ETSI Bard #57, n June 22nd 2006 and celebrated its first plenary meeting in September The aim f this grup is nt t duplicate standards develpment that is already underway in ther bdies, but t cmplement prgress being made with mre frmal standards and test specificatins s that the levels f interperability needed in next generatin netwrks and GRIDs can be achieved. Since the beginning f the prject, IRMOS has attended and actively cntributed t all ETSI TC Grid meetings in Sphia Antiplis (France): ETSI TC Grid #6 meeting, February 2008 ETSI TC Grid #7 meeting, April 2008 ETSI TC Grid #8 meeting, June 2008 Currently there are several Wrk Items in prgress within the Grid Technical Cmmittee. The fcus f IRMOS has been n: Wrk Item 1, reprts DTR/GRID Inventry f ICT GRID Stakehlders and DTR/GRID List f identified ICT GRID interperability gaps Wrk Item 5 Grid Services and Telecm Netwrks. Architectural Optins Bth Wrk Items have already received 13 cntributins frm the IRMOS prject. Additinal cntributins are planned t be submitted t the fllwing ETSI TC Grid meetings and the creatin f new Wrk Items will be cnsidered in case cntributins n new tpics are identified. It is wrth t mentin that, during the latest ETSI TC Grid #8 meeting, ur IRMOS clleague and WP7 leader, Mr. Karsten Oberle, Alcatel-Lucent Deutschland AG, was appinted ETSI TC Grid Vice-chair. IRMOS User Requirements Survey One relevant achievement f IRMOS regarding external presence during the first seven mnths f the prject has been the elabratin and distributin f a survey t the natural IRMOS target audience. The target f the survey is Eurpean rganisatins with current expertise and invlvement in real-time technlgies in rder t btain end-user requirements fr the IRMOS slutin. IRMOS Newsletter Issue N 1 4

5 IRMOS has elabrated and perfrmed a survey amng Eurpean rganisatins with current expertise and invlvement in real-time technlgies, in rder t btain end-user requirements fr the IRMOS slutin. The way IRMOS partners apprached this rganizatins was f different nature. Sme f the cmpanies were cntacted thrugh knwn cntacts fr the IRMOS partners which belng t the same sectr. In additin, ther rganizatins were cntacted with n initial business relatins with the partners f the IRMOS cnsrtium, thrugh natinal rganizatins r ther kind f cmpanies assciatins, via Internet,... SMEs represent a grup f particular interest and special emphasis has been made n cntacting them. The electin f an n-line survey as the way t carry ut this task was mainly based n the fact that ur target audience was Eurpean rganisatins (mainly SMEs) and this represents the best way t reach as many rganisatins as pssible. Sme f the surveys carried ut by Pstprductin rganisatins were dne during face-t-face meeting and taking advantage that a meeting f pstprductin film cmpanies tk place within the survey elabratin dates. The high respnsiveness frm the, ver ne hundred, invited rganizatins t the survey must be highlighted. During the 22 days the survey has been active, 45 cmpleted answers have been received (and 12 incmplete answers which have nt been taken int accunt). SMEs participatin raised up t 64%. 6 Frm the analysis f the results, a set f user functinal requirements has been btained and categrised in General technical Requirements, Security Requirements and specific requirements fr the Digital Film Pstprductin, elearning and Augmented Virtual reality scenaris. This set f user requirements represents an input fr the identificatin f functinal requirements f the IRMOS platfrm. Cmpanies shwed a big interest in security aspects specially related t the data cnfidentiality (67%) and integrity (58%). Regarding technical capabilities that users wuld like t have frm IRMOS: multivide cnferencing, virtual reality and tutr and discussin Bards fr elearning are the mst demanded. Fr the cmpanies belnging t Digital Film Pst prductin area scanning/digest services, mastering services and grain management service are the mst appreciated whereas fr the Augmented Virtual Reality cmpanies a high vide quality and a secure exchange f data, vide and audi are cnsidered t be the pillars functinalities t lk at. Past events IT Innvatin presented IRMOS t the UK MUPPITS prject ( in which IT Innvatin is a partner, n 12 February MUPPITS includes several pst prductin huses and a majr film studi (Pinewd) wh are interested in service riented appraches t cllabrative resurce sharing and pstprductin. During the Launch Event f FP7 Call 1 Prjects in Brussels, 4 March Prf. Thedra Varvarigu gave a shrt presentatin regarding IRMOS prject. The IRMOS Fact Sheet was als presented there. Exhibitin f psters during the Future f the Internet Assembly in Bled, Slvenia, April In the framewrk f the Future f the Internet Assembly, IRMOS is cntributing by presenting the prject s view regarding the visin and perspectives f the future f the Internet. During the BLED event (31 March 2 April 2008), Dimsthenis Kyriazis f NTUA presented a view fcused n Nn-Functinal Requirements. Mike Bniface (IT Innvatin) was invlved in crss-dmain discussins between media, services and netwrks which included a presentatin f crss-cutting issues and reference t IRMOS as an exemplar prject that spans these areas. Mrever, IRMOS signed the Bled Declaratin as an agreement f the FP7 prjects t participate and cntribute twards the Future f the Internet. During the EchGRID wrkshp in Athens, 9 June 2008, Andreas Menychtas and Klepatra Knstanteli f NTUA gave a presentatin n SOA and Grids and part f it was abut the IRMOS prject. EchGRID ( is a jint EU-China cperatin n the Grid prject which aims t fster cllabratin in Grid research and technlgies by defining shrt-, mid-, and lng-term visin in the field. Additinally, the IRMOS fact-sheet circulated t the participants (abut 40 peple). IRMOS Newsletter Issue N 1 6

7 The IRMOS prject was presented during the Tag der Wissenschaft 2008, n 21 June 2008, Stuttgart, Germany by the partner USTUTT. In a pster sessin and thrugh an experimental setup shwing the effects f service failure, the need fr real-time-cmpliant and SLA-adhering framewrks was presented. The IRMOS prject was presented, by Jsé Luis Urien frm Telefónica I+D, during the 1st internatinal wrkshp n Service Frnt End technlgies in the future Internet f Services, 24 June 2008, Madrid. This event was rganized by The Services Frnt End (SFE) Cllabratin Wrking Grup in FP7 (chaired by the EU FP7 FAST prject) tgether with the User-Services Interactin (USI) NESSI Wrking Grup, with the supprt f the Sftware and Service Architectures and Infrastructures Unit f the EC (SSA&I, D3, Mr. Jesus Villasante, Head f Unit). Upcming events IT Innvatin will have a stand at IBC2008, September, Amsterdam (Internatinal Bradcast Cnventin, attended by 40,000+ peple each year) and will prmte IRMOS as well as ther prjects IT Innvatin is invlved in because IRMOS includes pstprductin as an applicatin. A Whitepaper n the ISONI cncept is being written in cperatin between ALUD and USTUTT. It is planned t be released by end September The IRMOS prject will be present, with the attendance f several partners, in the next Internet f Services Cncertatin Meeting fr FP6 & FP7 prjects, September 2008 ( crdis.eurpa.eu/fp7/ict/ssai/events cmsft_en.html). IRMOS will participate in different cllabratin sessins related t the prject tpics. IRMOS will be presented during the EC Cncertatin Meeting: Frm Cmpnents t Services t Utilities - Units D3 (Sftware and Service Architectures and Infrastructures) & F3 (einfrastructures) and at the V GRIDs@Wrk Event ( etsi.rg/plugtests/grid2008/grid.htm), Octber 2008, Sphia Antiplis, France. IT Innvatin will attend the NEM Initiative Summit n Octber 2008 in Saint-Mal, which fcuses this year n Twards Future Media Internet. IT Innvatin will prmte IRMOS t attendees t raise the awareness f the prject within NEM. Several IRMOS partners will participate in the netwrking sessins during the ICT 2008 event, Lyn, France, Nvember 2008 ( ec.eurpa.eu/infrmatin_sciety/events/ict/2008/index_en.htm). Different IRMOS tpics will be addressed, such as virtualizatin, SLAs, strage units, etc. IRMOS is jintly preparing the netwrking sessin n Virtualized Service Platfrms with the RESERVOIR prject. This deliverable aims t address bjectives f tw different tasks f the prject WP2: Market analysis and User & Technical requirements analysis. The deliverable includes a descriptin f the markets whse intersectin cnstitutes the scpe f IRMOS: Service Oriented Infrastructure and Real-time technlgies. One f the mst imprtant utcmes f the deliverable is the elabratin, distributin and analysis f the survey issued t the natural IRMOS target audience t btain infrmatin abut user requirements. Finally a list f key technical parameters fr the IRMOS prject has been elabrated. The definitin, mtivatin and the their scpe f applicatin in terms f IRMOS wrk packages has been carried ut with the aim f having a cmmn understanding between all IRMOS partners. D2.3.1 State f the art reprt n IRMOS technlgies. This dcument prvides a view f the variety f technlgies that cmprise the multi-disciplinary IRMOS infrastructure, identifying the current technlgies, their limitatins and capabilities and explres their future trends. The results f the survey n the State f the Art, presented within this dcument cver the technlgy spectrum that will be cnsidered twards the realisatin f the IRMOS infrastructure. D9.5.1 Initial versin f Cllabratin Plan. Cllabratin fr the IRMOS prject is in tw distinct areas, within and withut the FP6/FP7 funding framewrk. This dcument sets the ambitins f IRMOS in cllabrating in these tw areas alng with the prcesses fr determining the ptimum use f IRMOS resurces t maximise benefit bth t the prject and t the Eurpean Ecnmic Area. As an Integrated Prject (IP) the IRMOS prject will take a lead rle in the jint cllabrative activity primarily centred arund ther prjects apprved fr funding in the same call. This cllabrative activity will perate n multiple levels frm the sharing f technical knwhw thrugh t training, disseminatin and explitatin activities. 9 D3.1.1 Preliminary versin f IRMOS Overall Architecture. The wrk described in this reprt prvides the analysis, design and specificatin f the initial verall architecture f the IRMOS platfrm. This is the first ut f the fur reprts, freseen in WP3 IRMOS Platfrm Specificatin, which will describe, in mre detail as the prject advances, the functinality f the IRMOS platfrm, the functinal and nnfunctinal capabilities and the individual cmpnents as well as their interactins. The utput f WP3 is f high imprtance fr the ther WPs and als fr the prject itself, since these reprts include the guidelines fr develpers t implement their cmpnents, assciating, at the same time, the user s requirements and the scenaris with specific functinalities and building blcks.
