POPE FRANCIS PRAYER INTENTION Please join Pope Francis in praying for the following intention during the month of August: Artists That artists of our time, through their ingenuity, may help everyone discover the beauty of creation.
3 DEAR CATHOLIC, PLEASE REMEMBER: Life is short, and death is sure; The hour of death remains obscure. A soul you have, and only one - If that is lost, all hope is gone. The saints teach that devotion to Mary is a sign of predestination. An easy devotion is the Three Hail Marys: every morning upon waking and every evening before retiring, pray Three Hail Marys in honor of the purity of the Blessed Virgin Mary; adding after each Hail Mary: By thy holy and Immaculate Conception, O Mary make my body pure and my soul holy, and O my Mother, preserve me this day (or night) from mortal sin. The grace of Salvation is promised to those who faithfully persevere in this small but powerful devotion HAIL MARYS The next devotion of the 2000 Hail Marys will take place on Saturday, August 12 beginning at 6:00 a.m. and ending with the 4:00 p.m. Saturday Vigil Mass. OUR MOTHER OF PERPETUAL HELP VIGIL LAMPS There is an opportunity to have one of the 9 Lamps at the Shrine Altar of Our Lady of Perpetual Help burn for your intentions. All intentions/donors for the weekly candles ($10.00) will be placed in the bulletin. The intentions/donors for monthly ($50.00) and yearly ($350.00) candles will be placed in the bulletin once and a card with the donor s name and intentions will be placed in the vigil lamp. Please contact the rectory if you would like to have a candle burn on Our Lady s Altar in this special way. PERPETUAL HELP LAMP INTENTIONS Week of August 6, 2017 In Memory of Maria Libia Florez 10 th ANNIVERSARY OF SUMMORUM PONTIFICUM September 14, 2017, is the tenth anniversary of the effective date of the Apostolic Letter given Motu Proprio by Pope Benedict XVI, Summorum Pontificum, on the use of the Roman Liturgy prior to the reform of This anniversary will be commemorated at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, with a Solemn Pontifical High Mass in the Extraordinary Form on the anniversary day, September 14, 2017, at 7:00 PM. The Most Reverend Joseph N. Perry, Auxiliary to the Archbishop of Chicago, will celebrate the Mass and preach. A bus will be leaving from in front of Holy Innocents at 3:30 p.m. to attend that Mass. Cost is $35 per person. Please call the rectory to reserve your seat for this historic Mass. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As the Latin Mass evolved in the first six centuries, the central prayer, what the Greeks called the anaphora and what we call today the Eucharistic Prayer, became fairly standard almost everywhere in the West. What we now know as Eucharistic Prayer I, or the Roman Canon, took a complex shape, not at all like the fluid and spontaneous prayers of early Rome, but a real architectural construction. The city of Rome was in a terrible condition by that time, and a series of political upheavals, plagues, and invasions swept through. Not much of Rome's former glory was left standing, except for the pope, who became a symbol of protection and hope for the troubled people. The structures of law and administration were swept away in the chaos, and the pope gradually assumed authority to restore and maintain order. Soon, the public liturgy of Rome became the city's only glory. The Romans wanted "good order" not only in their civic life, but in their liturgy. One prayer, increasingly enriched by music (although when the music tried to overtake the prayer the pope banned musical instruments entirely) was the new rule of the day. That one prayer, the Roman Canon, was solidly in place when the first liturgical book we have, the Leonine Sacramentary of 540, was compiled. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. MARCEL LEFEBVRE: THE BIOGRAPHY The definitive biography of Archbishop Lefebvre, written by Bishop Bernard Tissier de Mallerais Marcel Lefebvre's ( ) life is fascinating. After attending the French Seminary in Rome he joined his brother in the African missions. Consecrated bishop at age 42, one year later he was named the Holy See's Apostolic Delegate for French-speaking Africa. In 1962, he was elected Superior General of the 5,000-member Holy Ghost Fathers. John XXIII made him an Assistant to the Papal Throne and a member of the Preparatory Commission for Vatican II. In 1968, he resigned his post as Superior General rather than preside over the destruction of his beloved order. He went into retirement in Rome, only to be called on again and again by seminarians seeking his advice on where to get a solid formation. This led to the founding of the SSPX in All Catholics, particularly those attached to the Tridentine Mass, owe a huge debt of gratitude to this man. We ought to know him better. The book is rich in documentation, often unpublished, and in many theological observations." 718 pp. Hardcover with dust jacket. Sewn binding. 54 photographs, 16 maps and charts. Over 2,000 references and 1,500 names cited. 4 Pius XII Saw the Miracle of the Sun According to his own testimony, the Pope who declared the dogma of the Assumption saw the miracle of the sun four times. This information is confirmed by a handwritten, unpublished note from Pope Pius XII. Pius XII wrote, I have seen the miracle of the sun, this is the pure truth. The miracle of the sun is most known as the episode that occurred in Fatima, Portugal, on Oct. 13, According to the Fatima visionaries, Mary had said there would be a miracle that day so that people would come to believe. Thousands had gathered at the site of the visions, and the sun danced, reportedly drying instantaneously the rain-soaked land and spectators. Pius XII s note says that he saw the miracle in the year he was to proclaim the dogma of the Assumption, 1950, while he walked in the Vatican Gardens. He said he saw the phenomenon various times, considering it a confirmation of his plan to declare the dogma. The papal note says that at 4 p.m. on Oct. 30, 1950, during his habitual walk in the Vatican Gardens, reading and studying, having arrived at the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes, toward the top of the hill [ ] I was awestruck by a phenomenon that before now I had never seen. The sun, which was still quite high, looked like a pale, opaque sphere, entirely surrounded by a luminous circle, he recounted. And one could look at the sun, without the slightest bother. There was a very light little cloud in front of it. The Holy Father s note goes on to describe the opaque sphere that moved outward slightly, either spinning, or moving from left to right and vice versa. But within the sphere, you could see marked movements with total clarity and without interruption. Pius XII said he saw the same phenomenon the 31st of October and Nov. 1, the day of the definition of the dogma of the Assumption, and then again Nov. 8, and after that, no more. The Pope acknowledged that on other days at about the same hour, he tried to see if the phenomenon would be repeated, but in vain I couldn t fix my gaze [on the sun] for even an instant; my eyes would be dazzled. Pius XII spoke about the incident with a few cardinals and close collaborators, such that Sister Pascalina Lehnert, the nun in charge of the papal apartments, declared that Pius XII was very convinced of the reality of the extraordinary phenomenon, which he had seen on four occasions. There was always a close link between the life of Eugenio Pacelli and the mystery of the Virgin Mary. Since childhood Eugenio Pacelli was devoted to Our Lady and was registered in the Congregation of the Assumption, which had a chapel close to the Church of the Gesu, a devotion that seemed prophetic since he would be precisely the one to declare the dogma of the Assumption in The future Pope celebrated his first Mass on April 3, 1899, at the altar of the icon of Mary Salus Populi Romani in the Basilica of St. Mary Major. Eugenio Pacelli received episcopal consecration from Pope Benedict XV in the Sistine Chapel on May 13, 1917, the day of the first apparition of the Virgin of Fatima. As Pope, in 1940, he approved the Fatima apparitions, and in 1942 consecrated the entire world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Pius XII often spoke with Sister Lucia, the visionary of Fatima, and he asked her to transcribe the messages she received from the Virgin. He thus became the first Pope to know the third secret of Fatima, which Pope John Paul II would later make public. 5 JUBILEE OF FATIMA MODESTY IN DRESS Now that the warm weather is upon us, out of respect for Our Lord and for the edification of our neighbors, we ask that men and women, boys and girls appear in church modestly and respectfully dressed. Shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, halter tops, bare midriffs, strapless, off-the-shoulder, backless or low-cut dresses/tops or tight fitting clothes, beachwear do not fit the norm of Christian modesty or respect. Do not be an occasion of sin for someone else! Your cooperation is evidence of your love for Our Lord and for His Most Holy Mother and is greatly appreciated. A special invitation to join The Shrine and Parish Church of the Holy Innocents In Celebration of the 100 th Anniversary of the Apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima Led by Fr. James Miara, Pastor On a 10-day Pilgrimage: August 15-24, 2017 To the Marian Shrines of Lisbon, Fatima, Santarem, Tuy, Pontevedra, Burgos, Lourdes $3, To make a reservation or for more information contact: Peter s Way Tours AIR CONDITIONING COLLECTION Many thanks to the parishioners who have donated to the special Air Conditioning collection last week. $3,452 was collected. May the good Lord reward your generosity. If you have not yet contributed you may still do so. Just mark an envelope air-conditioning and it will be put into that fund. MASS TIMES A vacation from God is never taken. When traveling and preparing trips and vacations, do not forget to find the local church where you will be staying and attend Holy Mass there. Much effort is put into finding the perfect hotel, restaurants and recreational activities. How much effort is put into finding a church? Remember, it is a mortal sin to miss Holy Mass on a Sunday or Holy Day of Obligation and traveling does not dispense one from the Sunday Mass obligation! The following website will help you in finding a church while on vacation: The purpose of the Mass Times ministry is to help Catholics get to Mass by helping them find churches and worship times worldwide by easily providing worship times, church locations, contact information, website links and maps. For your Consideration Attire for Mass Attendance Summer unfortunately brings with it the height of immodesty, in both men and women. In this year dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima let us remember that words of Our Lady who warned us that "more souls go to hell for sins of the flesh than for any other reason." Our Lady of Fatima told Jacinta, "Certain fashions will be introduced that will gravely offend My Son." Jacinta also said, People who serve God should not follow fashions. The Church has no fashions; Our Lord is always the same. Therefore please consider. Out of respect for our Lord and for the edification of our neighbors, we request men and women, boys and girls, to appear modestly and respectfully dressed. Shorts, tank-tops, low cut, backless and mini-dresses, halters, bared midriffs, tight-fitting clothes, etc. do not meet the norm of Christian modesty and of respect, especially in church. Your cooperation is evidence of your love for our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and for His Mother Mary. Thank you! 6 The Shrine to the Unborn Blessed by Cardinal O Connor on December 28, 1993 The Shrine is dedicated in Memory of the Children Who Have Died Unborn We invite you to name your child(ren) and provide the opportunity to have your babyʹs name inscribed in our Book of Lifeʺ. Often children who have died before birth have no grave or headstone, and sometimes not even a name. At The Church of The Holy Innocents, we invite you to name your child(ren) and to have the opportunity to have your baby's name inscribed in our "BOOK OF LIFE". Here, a candle is always lit in their memory. All day long people stop to pray. On the first Monday of every month, our 12:15pm Mass is celebrated in honor of these children and for the comfort of their families. We pray that you will find peace in knowing that your child(ren) will be remembered at the Shrine and honored by all who pray here. We will inscribe the names of babies who have died before and at birth in our Book of Life, and as always, we invite you to visit the Shrine if you are in New York City.
