3 RULES OF FASTING AND ABSTINENCE From antiquity, Christians have practiced penance on Wednesdays (the day Our Lord was betrayed) and Fridays (when Christ was crucified). Wednesdays and Fridays remain days of penance in most Eastern Catholic Churches (and among the Orthodox), and in some monastic and religious communities of the Roman Church. Catholics observe Fridays as weekly penitential days on which abstinence from meat and other forms are expected as the norm. Days of Abstinence (obliges one to abstain from flesh meat. This does not apply to dairy products, eggs, or condiments and shortening made from animal fat. All cold-blooded animals may be eaten (e.g., frogs, clams, turtles, etc.)) Current Law: Obligatory at age 14 until death on Ash Wednesday and the Lenten Fridays including Good Friday. Recommended on Holy Saturday but not required. Traditional: Obligatory at age 7 until death on Ash Wednesday and the Lenten Fridays including Good Friday as well as on Saturdays including Holy Saturday, and Lenten Embertide (Wednesday, February 21, Friday, February 23, & Saturday, February 24; partial abstinence Monday thru Thursday (meat can be eaten at the principal meal on these days.) Days of Fasting (One full meal is permitted and two other meals may be taken which, when combined, are less than a full meal; no eating in between meals but liquids are allowed, including milk and fruit juices.) Current Law: Traditional: Applies to Catholics aged 18 to 59 inclusive, on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday only. Recommended on Holy Saturday but not required. All days of Lent including Holy Week except Sundays and Feasts of the 1 st Class (Solemnities) The more ancient (traditional) practices of fast and abstinence, while not obligatory, are praiseworthy. To be excused from fasting/abstinence for pregnancy, hard labor, hypoglycemia, diabetics, etc., one should request a dispensation form his/her pastor. The obligation to fast and abstain is a serious one and should not be taken lightly! Penance serves to rectify our self-centeredness, to make up for sins (our own and those of others), to strengthen our wills and to guide us in the steps of our Savior. It can be a very pure form of love for God, and can be offered up for the conversion of sinners and the relief of the souls in Purgatory. LENTEN INDULGENCE Please note well that on Lenten Fridays, a plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who, after Communion, recite the Prayer before a Crucifix. (For this prayer refer to any traditional Catholic prayer book) SECOND COLLECTION There will be a second collection today for the Peter s Pence Collection which was started centuries ago to provide financial support for the Pope and has evolved to fund the Holy See s charitable actions for those in need. REQUIEM MASS FOR JOHN MARTIN On Saturday, February 17 at 10:15 a.m. there will be a Month s Mind annuncio mortis Requiem High Mass for the repose of the soul of Holy Innocents parishioner and devotee of the Traditional Latin Mass, John Demory Martin ( ), who died on January 22. John was an accomplished author and playwright. His Funeral Mass was held in Leadville, Colorado on February 4. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord. FLOWERS DURING LENT Flowers are NOT permitted to adorn the altar during Lent, except on Laetare Sunday (March 11 th ), and the 1 st Class Feasts of St. Patrick (March 17 th ), St. Joseph (March 19 th ) and the Annunciation (April 9, transferred this year). 4 Marie Rose Ferron American Mystic, Stigmatic and Visionary ( ) Continued from previous Bulletin Her Devotion to the Eucharist Bishop Hickey authorized a private oratory next to Rose's room. When Mass was said there, especially on the feasts of the Blessed Virgin, Rose would drop into ecstasy at the opening prayers but she always revived at the moment of Communion. Generally, the instant she received the Sacred Host, her head fell back and she again drifted into ecstasy. Not the slightest movement of her throat muscles indicated that she was swallowing the Host, although It disappeared instantaneously. Many priests noted this fact, even one who did not to believe in the mystical authenticity of Rose's experiences. In fact, Rose's love for the Eucharist was intense. She had been accustomed to the daily reception of Communion, when suddenly it became impossible for her to communicate more than once a week. Rose suffered acutely from this isolation from her Eucharistic Lord. Once the priest was absent for two weeks. She was counting the days one by one until the Saturday when he was again to bring her the Blessed Sacrament, only to be told that morning that he was not coming. "When later she spoke of the incident," writes her biographer, "her eyes filled with tears and as they ran down her cheeks, the intense pain that they betrayed was revealed in her words. The words were simple and few, but they could move a dead man's bones. I am not sensitive, but this time I felt an acute pain all through me.... I shall never need a greater proof of the martyrdom that girl suffered when deprived of the Blessed Sacrament." When the priest learned that Rose lay constantly on a board to which she was tied, he was so profoundly impressed that he made arrangements for bringing her Holy Communion twice a week. During this same period, Rose became completely separated from the three priests from whom she had sought spiritual direction. Her isolation from them and the infrequency of the Eucharistic visits of her Spouse lasted several years. They were years of living by pure faith, amid deep sufferings, both physical and mental. For the remainder of her life, she was to wonder how she had been able to survive without having lost her mind. But she clung to the anchor of Faith and the Providence of God and found security in utter docility to her confessor's authority. Her Stigmata and wounds of the Scourging Rose Ferron was one of the most completely stigmatized persons on record. Whereas perhaps only thirty or so have borne the five wounds and the crowning of thorns, Rose had all of these, as well as the shoulder wound and the bleeding from the eyes. The wounds of Christ's scourging had appeared now and then during the latter part of But it was during Lent of 1927, a few months before Bishop Hickey sought in Rose a victim for his diocese, that these wounds began to appear regularly every Friday. The red and purple stripes were clearly visible on her arm, which seemed to have been lashed with whips. The wounds swelled and hurt like burns. Two days later, before the eyes of her biographer and another priest, the wounds of the nails appeared in her hands. Her feet too bore the marks of the nails. Rose had the sensation that her blood did not circulate beyond the stigmata in her feet, but the blood "streamed forth" from them. In describing the piercing of the muscles of her hands, Rose explained: "I feel them tearing apart; they seem to separate into shreds and to be drawn aside." A priest who examined these wounds in 1930 wrote: "The blood gave a sweet-smelling odor unknown to me, somewhat like a perfume; my hands became saturated with it...it was not a transitory smell, since the odor persisted till the following morning." The stigmata of the heart began during the Lenten season of They brought such sharp pains to Rose that she sometimes fainted into unconsciousness. She said that the interior pain was "frightful." At times the pain was felt intensely in her back, "where the lance seems to have stopped.", she said. The wounds of the crown of thorns resembled, in the mother's words, "two heavy cords that encircle her head." The holes made by the thorns themselves made Rose feel "as if her head were breaking open." These thorn stigmata never disappeared completely. They were still visible after her death. Finally Rose suffered from the shoulder wound, which likewise brought her acute pain. The five wounds and the crown "came to stay," but the others appeared every Friday and disappeared on Saturday as rapidly as they had come, without leaving a trace. On Fridays, when the bleeding would begin, Mrs. Ferron would lock the doors of the house and would admit only a few visitors who had obtained special permission. Rose was embarrassed at feeling herself an object of study and would keep the stigmata under cover. Some of the visitors fainted upon seeing Rose in agony. Such incidents caused great annoyance to the bereaved mother. "It is hard to keep the people out,"she once remarked, "but when they faint, it's far worse to nurse them back." The capacity for victim-suffering in this poor little Rose, crushed under foot as it were by her divine Gardener, was not yet filled. Like Him she had suffered from a scourging, from being pierced as if by nails, wounded in her heart, crowned with the piercing of thorns, and bruised on her shoulder. Yet had she to shed still more blood in order to fulfill her mission as victim in union with Him. But then, He had preceded her. Meek as a lamb, He Himself had been led to slaughter. In Him therefore Rose found strength. She found even love for the passion He was completing in her reduced body. As the story of pain unfolded with the months and the years, the realization that she was a victim grew more vivid. She knew that she was being tortured in the place of others and she accepted her vocation of bearing in her own body the physical pain spared them. In that, too, she resembled her Master, whose love prompted Him to bear mankind's punishment in its stead. (to be continued on next bulletin)
5 FEAST OF THE HOLY FACE OF JESUS - SHROVE FAT TUESDAY THE GOLDEN ARROW PRAYER May the most holy, most sacred, most adorable, most incomprehensible and ineffable Name of God be forever praised, blessed, loved, adored and glorified in Heaven, on earth, and under the earth, by all the creatures of God, and by the Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ, in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Amen. Following the 6:00 p.m. Mass on Tuesday, February 13, there will be a Holy Hour in honor of the Holy Face of Jesus to make reparation for the sins committed during carnival time. REFLECTION FROM CATHERINE DOHERTY Your daily life seemingly will be very dull. You have only one moment to live at a time. One day at a time between two Masses. You have no past; your yesterdays are gone. You have no future; your tomorrows belong to God. You have only today. Only this moment to be obedient unto death. Only this moment to burn with a fire that knows neither beginning nor end. Only this moment to spill yourself out in service to neighbor. For you must prove to your beloved that you love him. Words are not enough! Words die before the Word. You can only prove your love for him by loving your neighbor, for your neighbor is Christ. --taken from Madonna House Staff Letter #140 You are invited to join a 10-Day Pilgrimage to Poland with the Shrine and Parish Church of the Holy Innocents with Rev. Both are available in the Gift Shop in the Parish Office TO THE KIND AND POWERFUL VIRGIN MARY Be ever mindful, o sweetest Virgin, that Thou art my Mother, and that I am thy child; that Thou art powerful and I am a poor human, weak and miserable. I beseech Thee, sweetest Mother, to govern and defend me in all my ways, and in all my doings. Do not say, gracious virgin, that Thou cannot, for thy well beloved Son gave Thee all power in Heaven and on earth. Do not say that Thou shouldst not, for Thou art the common Mother of all poor mortals, and Thou art especially mine. If Thou were not able, I would excuse Thee, saying: it is true that She is my Mother and She loves me as her child, but, poor thing, She has neither the means nor the power to help me. If Thou wert not my Mother, I would resign myself saying: She is rich enough to help me, but unfortunately, not being my Mother, She does not love me. However, O sweetest Virgin, since Thou art my Mother, and since Thou art powerful, how can I excuse Thee if Thou dost not come to strengthen me, and if Thou givest me no help and assistance? Thus, Thou seest how Thou shouldst answer all my requests. For the honour and glory of thy Divine Son, accept me as thy child, making no account of my wretchedness and sins. Free my soul and my body from all evin, and grant me all of thy virtues, especially humility. Grant me, finally, all the gifts, goods and graces that please the Blessed Trinity. Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen - St. Francis de Sales
6 The Shrine to the Unborn Blessed by Cardinal O Connor on December 28, 1993 Often children who have died before birth have no grave or headstone, and sometimes not even a name. At The Church of The Holy Innocents, we invite you to name your child(ren) and to have the opportunity to have your baby's name inscribed in our "BOOK OF LIFE". Here, a candle is always lit in their memory. All day long people stop to pray. On the first Monday of every month, our 12:15pm Mass is celebrated in honor of these children and for the comfort of their families. We pray that you will find peace in knowing that your child(ren) will be remembered at the Shrine and honored by all who pray here. We will inscribe the names of babies who have died before and at birth in our Book of Life, and as always, we invite you to visit the Shrine if you are in New York City.
